A month of avoidance. A month had passed and nothing had changed. Vegas was still the same as ever, the Legion and NCR were still getting into skirmishes, the Omertas still had yet to be visited. Nothing had changed.

No talks. No visits. No morning pats. Just silence.

L had gone out the week before and had yet to come home. No warning, just the sight of them passing the securities guards with Veronica and Rex in tow. They had on their armor, their sledge on their back.

When would they return? There were rumors of Legion in the area.

What had happened? This was so stupid. If only they hadn’t drank that. They could’ve talked sober, things could’ve gone better, or at least different. They didn’t want to see him like this. How could they after being so cruel? They wouldn’t blame him if he hated them.

(Veronica has left a note in the suite. Though I don’t know how likely it is for Yes Man to go through and find it.)

Yes Man was losing his gosh darn mind.

He had watched L leave the strip through the guards, and even had one tail them through Freeside, and that was the last he had seen of them. They hadn't said goodbye. That was a month ago now. Every morning he booted up and did a quick sweep of the city, trying to catch a glimpse of them, but nothing. It was driving him insane.

The first week he had still been a bit angry with them. What did they really think of him and how much guilt he should feel?

He had been selfish the second week, thinking if he took New Vegas on his own, they would come crawling back, and he would welcome them with open arms. Not that he had the slightest clue how to do that.

Week three, he had tried to.. mechanically convince some people to help. Sure, they did what he wanted, but they didn't have opinions like L did. It just upset him more. He scrapped that plan pretty quick, but what was a couple missing Chairmen in the grand scheme of things?

It was four weeks now since L left.

He did something he hadn't dared do since they abandoned the building. He took the elevator up to the suite to search for answers.

It would be another couple of days, a week at most, before L would show up again. They had spent the whole time recovering in their suit, some of their companions helping them along the way. But their arms did heal up, aided by the plentiful amount of medical supplies the courier had picked up in their travels.

They came back up to the penthouse, the outfit similar to the previous parkstroller dress they had, but possibly patched up after that last scuffle. However, this time, their super-sledge was on their back. Seems they weren’t too keen at being caught unarmed again.

They walked their way down the steps up to the screen, giving Yes Man a friendly and warm grin. They even affectionately patted the console, perhaps a way to announce their presence.

“Hey there. Been a little bit, huh?”

His face popped up on the screen, thrilled to see them again. "Hello there! You've been gone a while!" He was used to that, but still, it was good to see them. "Oh! You'll never guess what I found while you were gone!"

On one of the smaller screens, lines of code started zipping past in green text. "I downloaded a file to make me more.. assertive. Ask me to do something!" He sounded very excited.

It had been a couple of days since the courier had last visited Yes Man, a length of time that wasn’t all that unnatural. Even while wandering all across the Mojave they still made time to see him at least once a week.

The door this time opened in Benny’s room, the proper way to get in. It was the courier, and they were dressed much more refinedly than last time. A green pre-war parkstroller outfit, clean somehow, with their long hair tied with a matching ribbon. Their heels clacked on the surface of the floor, a pleasing sound.

“Heyyyy there,” they sounded cheerful, “I did the thing. And thankfully, for my sake at least, the system went down the moment House passed. You’re up big guy!”

He made his way to the door once he heard it open, listening to the courier. "Great news!!" He seemed absolutely thrilled. "Looks like you're dressed up for the occasion! I can transfer my data over to a securitron inside, or we can go together. Whatever you think is best!"

Things had been relatively quiet, peaceful even, when the door to the backroom opened. What followed was heavy and ragged breathing as the uneven sound of bootsteps moved across the floor. A glance back revealed a hand actively smearing blood across the door and walls of the secret passage way, a familiar courier just barely managing to stay upright, clinging to the wall and their stomach with a sense of desperation they’ve never had before.

The armor they wore, modified combat armor and a centurion helmet no doubt stolen off a corpse, was just barely hanging on, cracked and splintered to something unusable. The supersledge attached to their back probably wasn’t helping either.

“Hey Yes Man-” their voice came out strained, “- can I crash here for just a little? I think my legs are about to give out.”

He turned to look at the courier, smiling as always. "Of course you can! Stay as long as you want." That was the expected response. Whether it was genuine was always up for interpretation. He started searching the workshop. "It looks like you need a stimpack!"

I just read I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream! What an interesting book! I'll be remembering it!
