SEMI-HIATUS | | Hi, my name is Peachy! | He/They | Sept 16th - Adult | Do NOT repost any of my art without permission. Thanks. | I'm more active on Twitter so feel free to drop by there!
I wanted to put my “Tumblr Basics” thread here, since Twitter is limiting people.
Remember, this is just a quick rundown on how to use Tumblr. Think of it as insurance just in case Twitter fizzles, it's always good to have a backup. I'll be going through this slowly, so please bear with me.
This is usually what a basic dashboard looks like, think of it like your home page after you make an account! The dashboard is the same as a twitter tl, but it's much more customizable. You can change it depending on who you Follow, For You suggestions, or for Specific Tags.
A Dashboard can also be customized by looks and colors using extensions. I personally use xkit, because I don't like the default blue, and prefer this paler one. But anyways.
This is your own personal bar, you can post your own content and media using these tools. They're pretty self-explanatory! And yes, you can add images and gifs on Text posts, and vice versa for Photos, etc. It's very versatile!
Now we're going to get into the tagging system a bit. The tagging system on Tumblr is actually a bit more polished in my opinion. They're the backbone of the site, and the easiest way to get your content discovered, even by people that don't follow you.
Also, yes, even after posting something you can EDIT it. There's also liking (the heart), reblogging (which is like retweeting, and it's the circling arrows), commenting (the speak bubble), and sharing (the arrow pointing to the right). The trash can is to delete.
You can use tags to search through an archive of content! You can do this accordingly by Top posts, recent ones, etc. And get even more specific by the type of post it is, and when it was put up!
Now back to your dashboard, and other things. This is your top right sidebar. The first is your Home, the Compass is the trending tab (rec for you), envelope is the msg in your inbox (like a ccat). The msg smile is your personal dms, the lightning is your statistics-
After the lightning is the extension I mentioned earlier, called xkit. It's something you can install through google chrome, and has a lot of more customizable features for your Tumblr. And then after that the person symbol is you Accounts Info Tab. While the pencil is just this:
Now lets go over your personal blog. So hovering any icon will do this show you a little preview. Clicking it will bring you to a quick overview. This will also show your quick bio info, similar to your Twitter header. You can scroll down for more, and see rec blogs on the right.
You can do this with any blog! However, there's one more thing, blogs also have what I call an "indoor" viewing too. If you go to an Overview, and then click the URL of the blog it will take you to the "indoor" area of that blog, in a new tab. The blog user's personal space.
You have a LOT of freedom to personalize your blogs. From the setup to the color, and how it's spaced, down to the very coding of the blog itself. Or you can have a more simple-looking blog too! There are plenty of blog codes that are free and available on Tumblr you can choose.
Also, you can ask questions, similar to ccat, as I mentioned before. If you can't find the ask option on a blog, you can just enter /ask after the URL. You can change it similar to how ccats work too. You can turn off the ask feature completely, or only do anon, or turn off anon.
Also, the tagging system works on personal blogs too, it's a great way for users to organize their posts. And makes it more convenient for followers to navigate your blog. If you can't find the option just type "/tagged/(insert tag here)" after the blog URL.
Now to make a lot of these changes you can go to the blog's "indoor" and look at the customizable option that will always be in the top right corner. You'll see the Home, Dashboard, Customize, and Settings options.
Back on the main dashboard you can also click the Account Info Tab, which is private to you btw, but clicking it will bring up the Settings option there too. It will bring you to more detailed settings for your account in general, and you can get more specific with your blogs.
You will find a lot of useful settings here, like customizing your Overview, Enabling Custom themes for "Indoor" areas of your Blog, down to hiding your personal Likes, who you Follow, and your Ask settings, etc.
You can also find the feature to make "secondary" side blogs. But they are more limited than normal blogs. There are more explanations for it when you go to that said settings, so no worries.
Now that that's out of the way, here's a quick look at what the "trending page" looks like. It'll be represented by the Compass on the main Dashboard. And yes you can look at these pages based on specific types of posts as well.
There is also "Tumblr Etiquette". Yes. That is a thing, always has been. There's a page that explains it more:
So basically nudity is fine, and anything around that range, etc, just not full-on humping sexual acts. It also has to be tagged properly. And you can also change your settings for viewing content like that as well.
Alright! I think that's most of it, if I miss anything I'll add to this later. Tumblr isn't a perfect site, by any means but it's still decent. And if you guys have any questions feel free to ask!
Here's a tutorial on how to put customized themes on your Tumblr, change colors, add pages, etc!
My first piece of the year. It’s the year of the rabbit, so I wanted to draw Bunnyblade on the moon, with a Dream blob. The feel I was going for is like a photograph a rover might take.
