Summary: Standing in front of his lawyer’s office building, a thin envelope burning his hands, Stiles feels neither elated nor like a new chapter is beginning. He feels empty, defeated, and like he failed at something he should’ve been good at.
A/N: Written for the @fullmoonficlet challenge - prompt #287: divorce Content notes: past Lydia/Stiles relationship, future fic, getting together
-=-=-=-
In the build-up to today, Stiles figured this moment would be a bit more, well, momentous.
However, standing in front of his lawyer’s office building, a thin envelope burning his hands, he feels neither elated nor like a new chapter is beginning. He feels empty, defeated, and like he failed at something he should’ve been good at.
In the end, it was no one’s fault that this didn’t work out. That they couldn’t make it work. Both of them were on paths that didn’t cross enough for their relationship to survive, too distanced from each other’s daily lives. It took a toll, which Stiles did expect it would, but he didn’t realize how big a toll that would be.
The divorce was filed as a no-fault one, with separation and irreconcilable differences both listed as the grounds for their agreement. The latter stings a little since Stiles has always associated that with discord between the two people seeking a divorce. They’re still on good terms, they still love each other, it just isn’t enough. The separation is easier to accept — they lived on different coasts for three years now, in different homes and with different daily lives around them. Of all the things they used to have in common, it’s only their old friends — the pack — that remained the same.
Stiles knows that he should move, that he should leave and go back to his life now. But it feels like it would mean ripping the final string, breaking the last piece of whatever it is that held them together. So he stands there, looking at the office building with an unfocused stare, mind running over what he could’ve done differently yet another time. Even though he knows that there was nothing that either of them could or would have done differently.
“So, you’re a free man again,” a familiar voice pulls him out of his thoughts and Stiles finally looks away from the building.
“Derek,” he says.
His voice is broken, weak, the reality of what happened this morning hitting him harder than he thought it would. Now, with a witness to it, Stiles finally feels the enormity of the moment, the importance of it.
It feels real when there’s someone to see it.
Stiles takes a deep breath and clenches his hand tighter around the envelope in his hands. It still surprises him how little there is, how it didn’t take much negotiation — all their assets were already separated, there wasn’t a need to divide anything besides them.
“Come on, let’s get a coffee,” Derek says and nods towards his Camaro, that’s parked right behind him.
—
“You and Derek are getting close again,” Lydia told him after one of the meetings with their lawyers, right at the beginning of the process of their divorce.
“Lyds, I would never—“ Stiles started, but stopped when she shook her head.
"I know,” she said. “I know you wouldn’t do anything before this is over. I’m just saying, it would be good for you. He would be good for you.”
—
Stiles didn’t take her words seriously then, but as time went on, he had to admit that she was right. Derek was close, not only physically now that they both lived in San Francisco, but also as a friend, as a confidant. They spent time together beyond what they needed to for work — Stiles as an agent, Derek as a consultant for the FBI — and it was simple, uncomplicated. Just friends.
Nothing more, because Stiles — as he told Lydia — would not pursue anything while he was still legally married, no matter the state of said marriage.
He’s not married anymore now, though. And Derek is here, ready to offer his shoulder for Stiles to cry on.
“How did you know?”
Derek lifts up his phone like it explains everything.
“Lydia,” Stiles says, understanding.
“She said you might need a friend,” Derek tells him. “I figured you need coffee. And someone to vent to.”
Stiles shrugs, unsure if that’s what he needs. But he’s glad that out of all the people who are here right now, it’s Derek. Lydia probably knew that too, knew who would be the best company for Stiles today.
Their divorce was never about the lack of caring about each other, which is part of why it hits Stiles so hard that their marriage didn’t work. He’d thought for so long that she was the one, but it turned out that you can’t keep a marriage alive on friendship alone, not at the kind of distance that was between them.
“Okay,” he says, then his lips quirk up as Derek lifts an eyebrow, his question unspoken. “Coffee,” Stiles adds in response to it.
Derek smiles fondly like he’s glad that Stiles agreed. For the first time, Stiles lets himself feel something about it. He’s seen the smile before, seen the way Derek sometimes looks at him with hope and longing at the same time. But until now, neither of them did anything other than what propriety dictated.
When he follows Derek to the Camaro, Stiles allows himself to let go of the past, of the restrictions he put on himself. And when Derek smiles at him again before he pulls away from the lawyer’s building, Stiles wonders if this is the new beginning today was supposed to be.
-=-=-=-
A year later, Lydia tactfully doesn’t point out that she told him so, but her knowing smile when they all gather for Thanksgiving and Stiles sits next to Derek is enough.
it’s only the first episode and i can already tell i’m going to ship fiona and nessa till my last dying breath.. i should get ready for pain cuz it’s probably never going to happen
The Bet
Hiiiiii! I just wanted to thank everyone who requested fic ideas, and say that I am working on getting threw all of them. Don’t be shy to request stuff to me and I will eventually get to all of it. Thank you lovelies❤️❤️
Request for #18 “I- So, I was just some bet! I was a fucking bet to you!”
Zach screwed up. Well that was an understatement. Zach fucked up big time, and he’s not sure if he can fix it . Through out Zach and Alex’s whole friendship they have both made stupid mistakes that have lead to small argument, but never this big of a mistake.
Flash back to earlier that week when it all happened. Zach took Alex to the Crestmont to see some new film he had been ranting about. As they were leaving the movie theater, they ran into Monty and his crew. “Shit. I can’t deal wait their bull today.” Alex muttered under his breath so that only Zach could hear him. He nods in agreement and tries to steer them away from Monty and his goons.
They are not quick enough and Monty sees them trying to leave without being seen, so of course he motions to his friends to follow him to Zach and Alex’s side. “Well, it looks like Zachy got himself a date with the faggot! I gotta hand it to you Dude, I didn’t think you had it in you. You own me, if we didn’t make that bet last year you two wouldn’t be fucking right now.” Monty says with a knowing smirk in Zach’s direction . All of Montys friends laugh, knowing exactly what he was up to. Zach pales and starts to panic.
If Alex finds out about the bet Zach made with Monty, he would definitely think Zach doesn’t actually want to be friends. “Shut the fuck up Monty there was no bet, come on Alex let’s get out of here.” Zach puts his hand on Alex’s lower back so they can escape from Monty, but Alex stiffens and doesn’t budge.
“W-What is he talking about dude? What bet?” He says quietly not meeting Zach’s eye.
Monty gets closer to them and chuckles. “Wait you never told him about our bet Dempsey? Well Alex after your retarded ass tried to kill yourself I bet Zach that he couldn’t get you to be friends wit-“ He got cut off by Zach “That’s enough Monty! Don’t say another word or you will regret it!” He says loudly over Monty. His jaw clenches and his shoulders square to get the message across that he wasn’t playing around.
Monty’s hands shoot up in surrender and he scoffs. “Whatever man. I was just telling this little cripple about our bet, but I guess you can do that yourself.” He smiles evilly at the two “see you later guys.” Monty says and walks away with his group of friends.
“I- So, I was just some bet! I was a fucking bet to you!” Alex says quietly after he’s sure that there is no one around them.
“No Alex! I swear its not like that. Please don’t think about it. I’m your best friend I wouldn’t lie to you.” Zach tries to reassure Alex but it’s no use. Alex starts to feel tears trickle down both of his cheeks, he feels so betrayed.
He turns to Zach. “ I don’t wanna see you ever again Zach Dempsey.“ Alex says quietly but harshly. “And don’t even think about following me.” He says before limping away as fast as he can. “W-wait Alex!” Zach is frozen to his spot. He can’t let Alex go, but he can’t seem to find the words to explain himself either. So he stands there and watches as Alex walked out of the Crestmont.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exactly four days later Zach is still desperate to try and get in touched with Alex. He needs to make sure he’s okay and he needs to explain himself. Alex is his best friend and he can’t lose him because he was an idiot and made a stupid bet. He can’t lose anymore people that he loves.
He has made 47 calls to Alex and 83 text messages and all of them were ignored. He even tried Jessica, but in response got a thirty minute lecture about what a piece of shit he was and then she hung up.
Zach does the only thing he can think of and decides to give Alex a visit in person. When Zach arrives to the Standall household he starts to freak out all over again. ‘What if he still hates you even after you explain what happened? What if he really never wants to talk to again?’ He thinks to himself as he walks to the front door and knocks.
When Mrs. Standall answers the door, she looks extremely surprised that Zach is there.”H-hello sweetheart. I didn’t know that Alex was expecting any visitors. He’s not in the best shape at the moment.” She says with a stressed tone In her voice. It’s obvious that she has been worried about Alex even more than Zach had been.
“ I umm, just came to check on him. He hasn’t been answering my texts or calls.” Zach says quietly, knowing exactly why he hasn’t. Mrs.Standall smiles warmly at Zach and puts a hand on his shoulder.
“Alex is lucky to have friends like you honey. Just head on up, he’s in his room. “ Zach thanks her and quickly makes his way up the stairs and to Alex’s room. He knocks on the door but recived no answer. He knocks on it a bit louder but still gets no answer. He waits a minute before walking in the room.
Alex is curled up on top of his sheets with earbuds in and dried tears on his face. Zach’s face softens and feels guilt deep in his gut. This is all because of him. This is all of his fault. He gently lays next to Alex’s body and watches his sleeping form. He looks so relaxed and miserable at the same time. Zach slowly reaches out and puts his hand on Alex’s face to wipe some tears away.
Alexes eyes slowly flutter open and land on Zach. His face quickly goes from confusion to straight panic. Alex tries to jerk away from Zach’s hand on his cheek but ends up landing on the floor. Zach gets up from the bed and rushes to Alex to help him up.
“ don’t touch me.” Alex says quickly. His voice sounds husky, like he hasn’t talked in a few days. He sits himself up on the floor slowly and Zach sits on the floor five feet away to give Alex some space.
He takes a deep breath before he begins to talk.” I know you don’t wanna talk to me or see me or anything like that, b-but shit, I just need to explain what the fuck happened alright? “ Zach says.
Alex looks skeptical, but stays silent and nods his head in approval for Zach to keep speaking.
“So last year after you- you…. ya know, Monty made a bet that I wouldn’t be able to become friends with you. I took the bet for my own selfish reasons..” Zach trails off and locks eyes with Alex.
“So what did he offer you money? Well I hope that you got what you wanted Dempsey because we are never going to-“ Alex says angrily and tries to get up off the floor to storm away. He’s obviously not getting what Zach was trying to say to him.
Zach cuts him off before he can say anything else or leave. “ Alex. I took the bet because I had a crush on you and I wanted a reason to come and talk to you. I wanted to help you and I wanted to be friends with you. I-I still do. Your my best friend. I’m sorry“ he says and looks away.
Alex looks like he’s at loss for words. He looks like he wants to yell or cry or run away. “ I want to be friends too but I just…” Alex says and looks away.
“It’s okay Alex. I understand, I don’t expect you to forgive me but I just wanted you to know that I really care about you and you were never just a bet to me.” Zach says sadly. This time Zach starts to get up so he can leave before Alex starts to yell at him for being a selfish asshole.
He doesn’t expect to be pulled close to Alex and he really doesn’t expect to feel a pair of lips on his own.
Zach is surprised but doesn’t hesitate to kiss Alex back. Alex pulls away and looks deeply into Zach’s eyes. “ That doesn’t mean I forgive you, but I do want to be friends.. maybe more obviously.” Alex says and blushes.
Zach chuckles and hugs Alex so tightly that he is surprised he isn’t breaking any bones. “ I’ll take that as a ‘I like you too.’” Alex hugs back and tucks his head in Zach’s shoulder. “Whatever asshat, I actually hate you.” Alex says in Zach’s neck
“I love you too.”
Thank you for reading babes! Keep up the requests. I actually really like the way this one turned out.💕
And friendship… it can be a very powerful thing.
this is super cute but can talk about how zach cups alex's neck with his big ass hand
And Harry looks funny.😂
Justin: What, you’d mean like I’d-I’d be your brother. Clay: Well, I’m-I’m not familiar with all the lingo, but…
