Okay, so hereâs what Iâm thinking.
New Gemâs clothing is very suspiciously similar to Pink Diamondâs original outfit. Sheâs wearing the exact same shade of magenta. Sheâs got the poofy sleeves, the poofy pantaloons, and even the white socks and flats combo going on.
Iâm thinking that, rather than trying to usurp âPink Diamondâ or create a new Diamond, NG was actually a massive fangirl of Pink Diamond, to the point where she modified her form to resemble Pinkâs clothing. Maybe she even poofed herself so she could reform with an outfit that just so happened to be like her Diamondâs clothes.
What Iâm saying is, we might not be seeing a âGem tries to restart the old Gempireâ situation, but a âPG version of Miseryâ situation.
So, NG was a huge fan of (what she thought was) Pink Diamond, which we now know was a front. Judging by the fact that sheâs pink, she might have even been created by Pink Diamond using her essence alone. Being an upper-class Gem (if it turns out that sheâs Morganite), she did everything to shape herself into the sort of Gem that she thought would make Pink Diamond proud.
Then Pink Diamond âdies.â Sheâs horribly traumatized. She probably mourned just as much as the Diamonds during those 5,000 long years after the war. But now Pink Diamond is back! ButâŠsheâs not acting like the person NG obsessively idolized. Sheâs calling herself by a completely different name and has assumed a completely different form. On top of that, sheâs taking things in a completely different direction. In fact, sheâs saying that the way NG is, the way she thought Pink Diamond wanted her to be, was all wrong, and that NG should be something different instead.
Itâs like when a creator starts taking their art or music in a new direction because of personal events in their lives changing them and giving them inspiration, and old-school âhardcoreâ fans donât like it because itâs different. Itâs like when âedgyâ artists start taking their music in a less angry direction or change styles when their lives start to suck less or they seek treatment for their depression. Instead of being happy for the artist who makes the stuff they love getting their life together, certain fans get mad because âtheir music sucks now.â
So NG, Pink Diamond fangirl extraordinaire, hatches a plan to get her idolâs attention and force her to go back to making her old stuff. The stuff that meant so much to NG that she based her entire personality and fashion sense around it. Sheâs going to go straight to Earth, remind âPink Diamondâ why she was so admired before she started doing all this new stuff that sucks, and force her to go back to doing what she always did (in a way that just so happens to make NG the absolute center of her idolâs attention).
NG is basically like a creepy fan with no understanding of healthy boundaries who doxxes or harasses their former idol on Twitter after obsessively admiring them because they feel like they own the creators/their work and can force them to do things for the fanâs benefit. The kind who sends their favorite actorâs/singerâs significant others threatening messages because they think this new positive relationship has âruinedâ the creator and their work/cut them off from the fanâs fantasy life because now theyâre a real person with their own social life instead of a distant idol to admire. Heck, if NG thinks that âPink Diamondâsâ new friends and family are what âruinedâ her, she might try to take them out of the picture, too. She will do whatever it takes to preserve the unhealthy parasocial relationship sheâs built up in her head.
ExceptâŠPink Diamond isnât here anymore. Sheâs gone. Itâs just Steven now. Steven doesnât belong to anyone, heâs his own person who has a right to make his own choices. On top of that, the âPink Diamondâ she obsessively idolized wasnât even a real person, either. We, the audience, know that Pink Diamond was absolutely miserable, and that âperfectâ facade she put up wasnât the real her (and, honestly, wasnât even all that âperfectâ or put-together in the first place, given her expected role of âfrivolous class clownâ within her birth family). Sooner or later, NGâs going to run into that indisputable fact face-first like a brick wall. And thatâs probably going to be when things will start to get really interesting.
