Oh, if I recall correctly, it's never been explicitly stated in BBC Sherlock; I think context clues point to him possibly being abused (at least emotionally) in his past, and possibly his low self esteem making him believe he isn't WORTH saving / helping. Context clues point to him always being the responsible one while his sister wasn't, which then followed him to his chosen career as both a doctor AND a soldier (both dedicated to "helping people" in the basest sense) and making rank of a captain AND being proclaimed as a "very good" doctor? Well, then, yeah, it's understandable why he feels he has to be able to handle things on his own.
And it's also how many of us read John's character, so I think that idea is also primarily fanon, but has a lot of good reason to exist as "fact".
I personally think it's a combination of all the above, plus his own trauma / PTSD from the war and losing a lot of people under his watch, so I think that he genuinely may have a bit of a saviour complex in that sense.
One of the things l love so much about BBC John is just how complex of a character he is, and how Martin portrays his character on screen. A LOT of those context clues I mentioned are STRICTLY by the way Martin portrays John, and quite frankly, it's brilliant.
