GEaH Season 1 controversy
I think in the entirety of Season 1, it was pointing to Guy and Sam having a relationship sometime in the future. Not Guy and Michellee being a thing.
Before anybody jumps at me, it’s not because ’ew straight’ or something along those lines, and this absolutely isn’t a post to hate on the ship. This is an interpretive character study. From a logical standpoint, Guy and Michelle, ultimately, don’t get along as a couple.
(SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1 obviously)
I’m going to start with episode 5. This scene specifically.
In episode 12, directly after Guy ‘breaks up’ his friendship with Sam, this happens.
Michellee has mainly only given him negative interactions, while he’s only had one major blowout with Sam. And in that scene in episode 12, it’s implying exactly that.
Guy found hope with Sam, but his hope with Michellee was short lived.
Throughout the season, Michellee is quick to jump on Guy due to small imperfections or things she doesn’t deem right. She has done nothing but immediately turn against Guy (for understandable reasons) right after getting to warm up to him again for very small things that he had done (or in some cases, things he HADN’T done). In reality, she has a daughter that she needs to protect, and someone who she just met being thrown into her life and being so flippy-floppy (to her) obviously isn’t ideal.
He’s obviously shown to have an intense infatuation with her, but as the series progresses, the longer that Michellee was out of the picture of their story, the softer Guy became towards Sam. Rewatching the series you’ll see that they’d warm up to each other and have some very, very interesting bonding moments. However, the moment Michellee returned and there was the prospect of them being together, he’d become aggressive and irritated with Sam again.
The sub plot of season 1 was Michellee bonding with her daughter. The main plot? Guy bonding with Sam.
There’s a few key traits as to why they wouldn’t get along. Guy settled for a run-of-the-mill, steady job because he had given up. He didn’t want to, but he felt like he had to.
Michellee gave up her dreams not just because she had to, but because she wanted to. She had E.B., and that’s all she wanted in the end. She wanted something safe and secure for them both after her husband passed.
Despite disagreeing with Sam about it, Guy is still outgoing, adventurous, inventive and ready to take risks despite losing hope. Opposites may attract, but this is everything that Michellee doesn’t want, and verbalized it in the series. That’s why Guy gets along pretty well with E.B., she’s a lot like Sam.
Sam and Guy, however, are still opposites, but have enough complimentary traits to get along. They’re both outgoing and inventive. Guy is pessimistic, while Sam is optimistic. They bounce off of each other’s personalities well, unlike Guy and Michellee, who only seem to clash and argue.
Sam and Guy had countless meaningful bonding moments and important talks throughout the series, while Michellee and Guy had none.
In the end, I believe that Guy and Michellee should simply stay friends. In total, it’s be healthier for them both to remain platonic. The way they got together was incredibly unhealthy anyways; they were all aware that Guy used E.B. as a gatekeeper (via Sam’s urging), which is what ultimately changed Michellee’s mind. He got along well with E.B., so why not?
Michellee is perfectly fine on her own; she’s a strong woman taking care of her daughter and doesn’t need someone else in her life changing things in such a huge way. They wouldn’t get along well due to this reason and others that I had listed–maybe as friends, but not as a couple. Guy is currently an unemployed felon, and she’s already made it clear she doesn’t want someone like that around her child.
Sam, however, needs support from someone like Guy, vice versa. There’s several other points that I want to make, but this post is already incredibly long. I may make a separate post later.
Guy and Sam’s relationship would be (and is) much healthier than Guy and Michellee’s for multiple reasons. Guy and Michellee would be happier and better off being friends/in a platonic relationship instead of having a romantic relationship for her sake, and for E.B.’s sake.
