#173 – Megalo Box: Hosoya Yoshimasa

Megalo Box is the 50th anniversary ‘inspired by’ Ashita no Joe project, starring Hosoya Yoshimasa in the lead role of Junk Dog. After taking a 6-month hiatus due to illness in mid-2017, Hosoya’s back in full-force this season with a string of major roles in shows like Caligula, Sareryu, Golden Kamuy and Devil’s Line, but JD looks to be the most intriguing of the bunch. Read his thoughts on both Megalo Box and Ashita no Joe in this interview by Animate Times.

Q: How did you feel when you found out you’d landed the role of Junk Dog in Megalo Box?

A: I was happy. I’d been planning on going on hiatus at the end of April last year, and the audition for Megalo Box was the last one I took prior to my break.

I found out that I’d been chosen for the role midway through my hiatus, right when my health and the condition of my throat were both on the verge of full recovery. Rehabilitation progressed at a gradual pace, but I was sure I’d be able to make it in time for recording so I was pleased to have passed the audition in the end.

This is a personal thing but anyway – when I went to New York during my break, I happened to watch Creed (2015 movie) on the plane. I kinda thought that I’d be like Rocky if I were to return in this way, and I wondered if that was what a comeback would feel like (laughs). I was very grateful that the stars aligned for me to get this role. continue

News - Toei announced today that they’ve officially chosen veteran seiyuu Aya Hisakawa as the new voice of Bulma in the Dragon Ball series. You might have heard Hisakawa before as Sailor Mercury in Sailor Moon, Skuld in Oh My Goddess!, Miki in Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Kero-chan in Cardcaptor Sakura. She’ll be taking over the role sometime after episode 128 of Dragon Ball Super, apparently the last episode that Hiromi Tsuru recorded lines for before passing away last November.

Reasons to love Hosoya Yoshimasa - Birthday Post

February 10! 

If you couldn’t tell from my profile and posts, I really like this adorable dork named Hosoya Yoshimasa. So today, on his 36th birthday, I shall list all the reasons to love this man.

Great Voice. It may be easily recognisable but all his characters are awesome. (Sports Characters like Hyuuga and Otabek, Action like Reiner and Tokoyami and Others like Nezumi and Tengenji).

Great Singing. It’s just… angelic. My favourite songs from him are Go On (Shiraishi), Ashita e no Last Race (Sousuke), and Kaze no Requiem (Nezumi). But honestly, every song of his is just. So. Beautiful.

Personality. You can’t help but think he’s a strong person because of his roles, but in real life, he’s really nervous about every event, shy and a dork. He’s constantly made fun of because of that. Sometimes I question how he can seem so strong but is actually so adorable. Here’s my favourite event with him which is Free! Eternal Summer with subtitles. 

Cuteness. I already mentioned it before, but I seriously cannot handle him sometimes and I’m weak to cuteness aghidvnuo he’s really adorable. His laugh and smile is everything. 

Hard working. Do I really need to mention this? He came a long way from being poor when he first started (and wanted to give up) to voicing so many characters and gaining a fan base overseas. He is also a freelance voice actor so he has to schedule everything himself, and I think that’s really admirable! 

Humble. This may be because he’s Japanese but still. He constantly thanks his fans for supporting him and even said he would want to meet those overseas, and he really did by going to Taiwan in 2015 as Yamazaki Sousuke.  (Everything is in Chinese but if you want a brief translate just ask me!) Here’s to hoping he’ll expand his horizons as he travels all around the world!
