(seriously, this is just a college student making peep wine for marks. Here's some proof:)
Sorry for the silence, it's been a busy time here (but not with the peep wine. I'm checking on them today but last week we took readings and they're fermenting! Just very low ethanol numbers right now. But that makes sense as it was only a week out from the start)
I was asked for the recipe for this wild experiment. Here's what I have so far. Please note that we have done the 186 peeps but also 164 peeps and our "wild card" batch of ???? Peeps. 186 is the proper amount to get a 1.1 specific gravity according to a calculator online. We didn't have enough peeps for two proper batches as we did the calculations in the lab. Who would have thought 350 peeps wouldn't be enough?? 😂
😂😂 the recipe is not entirely precise but:
Peep Wine Recipe (experimental)
Ingrédients:
4.5L water
186 peeps
Half-ish a packet of sparkling wine yeast (or other high-ethanol-tolerance yeast)
Melt the peeps in a pot with some of the water. DO NOT HEAT ABOVE 160°F. Heating just to like, 40°C is fine (yes those are two different units. I am Canadian and someone gave me a F temp but we used C to monitor)
You just want to melt the peeps to a point you can mix them with the yeast without lumps and you can put them in the fermenting container easily.
It will foam A LOT. Most of this foam will re-liquify but some will just end up staying as foam because of the gelatin (we assume)
Put the yeast in warm (30-40C) water according to the directions.
After the melted peeps have cooled a bit, and the foam hopefully has gone down, pour into the container. Most will re-liquify as I stated above. Add the remaining water to fill up to 4.5L
Pour in the yeast when the peeps are cool enough, make sure it gets into the main liquid peep mixture, not just on the foam.
Seal the container and have an air lock on it.
Please note that if the foam is too high it will be pushed out into the airlock. If it gets out of the airlock, it will solidify on the air lock, closing and pressurising the container and that's not great lmao. Foam will get everywhere when you open it. You can probably guess how I know this. Yeah...
As for how long to keep it fermenting... That's what we're gonna find out 😂😂
Good luck and happy peepening!
(Bonus if you can decipher my scribbled notes. Please note that we thought we had 360 peeps but it was actually 350)
When you stare into the peep juice, the peeps stare back.
I keep getting asked by the other students and lab techs/assistants/professors what the dark bits are. When I tell them they're the eyes, everyone so far has been creeped out.
And I laugh and tell them "They know what we've done, and they judge us for it."
The Peepening - Made by @squirreltidings
If y'all liked the unidentifiable yellow glitter goo you'll love the time I made wine out of marshmallow Peeps
...how???
Well you see. The ingredience for wine are:
-yeast
-sugar
-time
And it turns out the yeast aren't really that picky about what kind of sugar you give them, as long as there's enough of it
Peepswine moodboard
It ended up tasting kinda like a very mild, sweet white wine, with a faint but unmistakable aftertaste of marshmallow
The 100% true and honest answer is someone said the phrase "fermented peeps" around me at exactly the right time and I went "ohhh that's a sin I simply must commit"
To the people um-actuallying me in the notes about calling this wine: clearly I have no respect for nature, god, or man; why would you assume I respect arbitrary alcoholic beverage classifications
To upset the French
The literal inspiration for this chaos of sin science project.
If you, too, are waiting for a sign to cause chaos science with peeps and anger the french while you're at it, take this as that very sign.
Also bonus marks if you are actually getting graded for it.
Can you share any tips/values from peep wine? Ive picked up a a lot if free time, and perhaps the ingredients,
Make sure you dissolve the peeps slowly! The yeast create a lot of tiny bubbles which normally dissipate instantly, but the gelatin gives them enough structure to turn into a ton of foam if you're not careful. Start by filling no more than 1/3 of the vessel at a time!
Oh.... Ohhh.....
That explains a lot.
Hi this is very out of left field but my friend and I have been wanting to making peeps wine and I went down a rabbit hole looking for instructions and found you via the original person's page. Do you have a recipe we can try out? We're new to anything like this and the battlecrazed-axe-mage account hasn't got back to me. If not that's fine
basically just follow any mead making tutorial but replace the honey with an equivalent amount of peeps. Roughly you need about 1.5 kg of sugar per 4 L of mead (3 lbs per gallon). Use the nutrition facts on the peeps to figure out how many you need for that sugar content.
If it's your first time brewing I recommend getting a kit so you have the right supplies and sanitizer.
Enjoy the cursed beverage that looks back at you :)
(People in the school labs keep asking me questions that I don't know the answers to because I did not think about how to brew before starting this cursed beverage project. It's hilarious every time I tell them that I don't even drink, let alone know anything about alcohol or brewing it LMAO)
So.... I did a thing.
I was shown this post a few weeks ago, near the start to the semester:
For context, the day before, my Food and Pharmaceutical Microbiology lab was focused on setting up several experiments with the hope that they would produce terrible, unholy results. Because that's what you do in Food and Pharmaceutical Microbiology lab. You make things spoil and go bad.
We were also informed that as we are in our final semester, we would be expected to complete a "Capstone" project. Basically a lab based project testing really whatever our cursed hearts could imagine, and then we get results and make a presentation. Examples were things like "testing the fish pond water a certain number of times and making conclusions," etc. I asked, having listened to him saying during the introduction that we are heavily discouraged from consuming anything in the lab, "What if we wanted to make something that was food safe and therefore could be consumed?" and he listed the different requirements we would have to meet. But my group didn't seem interested in the labour at that time. So... fish pond it was. And then I saw the above post and....
and so I sent this email to my professor, because I am a chaos gremlin.
He responded like 4 days later and said that we could do that... as our Capstone project.
And my heart and chaos were hooked, and would not be stopped....
