[video thumbnail description: a colour still of a person sitting in a scooter with their body turned to the right, facing the viewer. behind them to the right is a memorial stone with words etched into it. around the stone are flowers and bushes. in the background are container cranes. end description.]
we are pleased to present two videos that youth made during the Anne Frank Memory Walk Project!
the first video is of the Missing Women’s Memorial Stone. it explores the story of how the monument came to be and why it holds a significant space in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. unlike the majority of monuments in our city, this one was created through a grassroots community effort.
the goal of the films is to investigate monuments in Vancouver that share stories of discrimination in our city. youth approach passerbys questioning their knowledge of the monuments and the stories being commemorated. with mentorship from filmmakers from Amsterdam, these are what the youth have created!

August 5th, 11am – 4pm Healthy Relationships & Boundaries This workshop looks at a variety of oppressions that young people have learned to internalize. Through various activities involving movement, writing, and discussion, there will be opportunities to explore how oppression influences the perspectives on oneself and to come up with ways to break free of these false or negative perceptions.
August 7th, 11am – 4pm Understanding Internalized Oppression Together we will explore the concept of boundaries: what they are and where they come from. This also looks at why boundaries are important foundations to having healthy, anti-oppressive relationships with ourselves, our friends, our family and our significant others.
August 12th, 11am – 4pm Unpacking Ageism in Youth Engagement In this workshop we will unpack ageism that affects children and youth. Here we are encouraged to share our experiences of what it is like to be a young person while navigating power dynamics in an adult-dominated world. As well as what we can learn from these experiences to become better at practicing allyship for young people as we move into adulthood.
August 14th, 11am – 4pm Effective Allyship with Young People As a group we will look at power and privilege and what it means for us and the people around us. As young people, we will identify our privilege and our capacity to work in meaningful solidarity with diverse individuals and groups. We will explore some of these opportunities for allyship, especially with our peers who experience multiple layers of marginalization and people who are much younger than us.

Are you a community organizer or an event planner? Are you seeking ways to improve accessibility for your events? Join BCRAD & PeerNetBC for a workshop where we can explore and challenge accessibility beyond physical access.
Taking place on unceded Coast Salish territory (Musqueam, Squamish & Tsleil-Waututh nations) PeerNetBC & BCRAD: British Columbia Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf are pleased to present: Reimagining Accessibility: What can contemporary understandings of disability teach us about access? While theories of disability have been rapidly advancing over the past few decades, implementation of these ideas as accessibility practices has largely not kept pace. As a result, standard accessibility practices do not entirely provide community organizers and healthcare providers with the resources to become inclusive of ability. This workshop looks at current models of disability, the history of accessibility, and the ways disabled people define identity in order to determine sociocultural barriers surrounding people with disabilities. Participants will be presented with a purview of current ideas and issues around accessibility, and asked to contribute ideas in a subsequent discussion around making accessibility more inclusive. Co-facilitated by Alex Lu & vanessa bui Cost: $0 - $50 sliding scale (no one turned away for lack of funds) Location: Room 1530, Canadian Pacific Lecture Room, SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver BC Date: Wednesday, August 13th, 2014 Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm Accessibility: - ASL interpretation is secured for this event. - The building entrance, workshop space, and washrooms are wheelchair accessible. - PeerNetBC strives to be scent-free; Please refrain from wearing scents such as perfume, cologne, essential oils, etc. For some information regarding Multiple Chemical Sensitivities please read: http://dualpowerproductions.com/2011/03/14/multiple-chemical-sensitivities-mcs-accessibility-basics/ TO REGISTER: http://tinyurl.com/p7e7ajx For any questions or accessibility requests please contact: [email protected]
