So I thought this was commonly known internet navigation (but apparently it might just be those of us who have been using the internet since the 90’s who still know it). Or so it seems based on… a grumpy comment I got.
When you see an arrow like this:
It means you click it to expand out a hidden section.
It’s an accordion section/menu! It’s useful in web design to hide information that may be overwhelming under specific headers so people can only see what they need.
Here I’m using it for people who need the content warnings to be able to check, but for those who don’t need them and don’t want to be spoiled to just move right past without accidentally reading anything.
It’s still the user’s responsibility to click the arrow and read things as they need! But it is all warned. (And, yes, the all encompassing issues are already a tag on the fic, I’m just providing additonal warnings per chapter.)

With this post, I'm gonna guide you through the process of installing the AO3 Enhancements browser extension, normally only available on desktop, on your mobile device. It works a charm, and I've been using it for months, and it's made the Undertale tag navigable again despite my utter disinterest in AU content.

Let's get started!
UPDATE: For IOS users! You can download the browser app "Orion" which allows firefox extensions! No need to do this procedure, just install it and download the extension as you normally would from Firefox Add-ons
1) Download Firefox Nightly.
For those who are hearing of it for the first time, Firefox Nightly is a separate Firefox browser made specifically for developers. The name itself is due to the fact that it's patched and updated on a daily (er, nightly) basis. This makes it more prone to crashing and issues than the standard Firefox app, but I've switched over to nightly as my main browser months ago now, and if I ever encounter a problem, I just... download the latest update and I'm good to go.
What's crucial about Nightly, however, is that it gives the user access to various additional features. One of them being desktop extensions on mobile, which is what we're here for.

2) Make a Firefox Account
This will be necessary to install the extension later
Once you've done that, go to the Firefox add-ons website and log into your account in the upper right (where it says "Biscia" in the screenshot below). Click on "View My Collections"
3) Making an add-on collection
Since browser extensions are technically blocked from being directly installed by the browser, Nightly offers a workaround.
Create a collection, and give it a name without spaces to avoid errors.
4) Adding the extension
Here is the link to ao3 enhancements (if it's not showing up, try reloading the page in desktop mode). Scroll down until you see the option "Add to a collection" and select the one you just created.
You can do it with any extension! Go nuts. There's lots of good stuff out there. Just remember that it's not guaranteed every one of them will work, since they aren't intended to be used on a mobile device.
5) Activating debug mode.
In your browser, tap the little sandwich menu in the bottom right, scroll down and click Settings. It should be under "Save to Collection".
Scroll down even more until you reach the "About" section, and click on "About Firefox Nightly"
Click on the firefox logo 5 times, and it should be done.
6) Activating your add-ons
Go to "View my profile" as seen in the screenshot in step 2. At the end of the link, there should be a string of numbers. Copy it.
After this, go back to the browser settings again, scroll down until you reach the add ons section and click on "custom add on collection". Paste the numbers you copied from your profile where it says "User ID", and the name of your collection EXACTLY as it appears in the link, where it says "Collection name". Mind, it's case sensitive.
Press okay, and it should kick you out of the app. Open it again and, going in add-ons then add-ons manager, you should be able to add your extension.
ATTENTION!! If you get the error message "failed to query add-ons" you either inputted the wrong user id or the wrong collection name
To avoid this type of issue, don't name your collection something that has spaces or punctuation in it, as it might mess with the link formatting.
7) Setting up your AO3 enhancements filters
If everything's worked out fine, you should be able to visit ao3 and see a new drop-down window.
Click on it, click on option, and it should open up a new window with all the settings available! Tweak them to your heart's content. Though mind, the background tag wrangling done by the ao3 volunteers doesn't work with this extension, so the extension is going to hide only the works tagged EXACTLY what you filtered. Character for character. This makes things a bit tricky when people aren't consistent with their tagging, but if it proves to be enough of a problem, you can just filter out the author name in full and be done with it.
You can choose to hide the fic behind a "show" button, or make it not show up at all. If you choose the latter option, and you blocked a tag that has lots of fics, it might look like certain pages of searches are almost empty, since all the fics were hidden.
And that's it! I sincerely hope this helps people avoid their triggers and other topics that make them uncomfortable. No more excuses fellas. You find a tag you haven't filtered yet? You add it to the list and move on. Easy peasy.

Just wanted to share some scripts I use to improve my AO3 experience :)
1. AO3 Enhancements Extension
Available on Chrome & Firefox, this extension can:
- Track works you’ve kudosed, bookmarked, and subscribed to.
- Show an estimated reading time based on your WPM
- Hide works with too many fandoms
- Show works only in your language(s)
- Hide works from certain authors
- Decrease story width (I use this all the time. It’s great.)
- Show a Kudos/Hit ratio
- Show word count per chapter
2. User Scripts
Note: These only work on PC because you have to install the Tampermonkey extension to use these.
AO3: Kudosed and seen history - Easily keep track of which fics you’ve kudosed, bookmarked, or seen. You can even skip/hide fics!
Character Appearance Count - Counts how many times characters (or any other specified phrase) shows up in a fic.
AO3 Savior - Hide works by tag, author, words in title, or words in the summary. Also includes a whitelist for tags.
AO3 Savior Config - Necessary companion to prev.
Ao3 Only Show Primary Pairing - Set your favorite character and relationship tags. If they aren’t listed in x (number you specify) tags then the fic is hidden. Lifesaver if you only like reading certain characters/ships.
ao3 menu items - Adds extra links to the dropdown under your profile pic.
AO3: highlight tags - This is my favorite one. Immediately see tags you love (or hate) by coloring them. I cannot describe to you how helpful this one is.
AO3: Page Count - I like to use this one just for funsies. It tells you how many pages a fic is.
AO3: Tag Word Cloud - Change font size of words of AO3 tags according to the word frequency in each chapter or entire works.
AO3 author+tags quick-search - Adds quick links from AO3 fics to more fics by the same author in the same fandom/character/pairing/any other tag.
ao3 series collapser - Collapses works that aren’t part 1 of a series.
AO3: Links for Entire Works - Add links to next and previous chapter when viewing Entire Work on AO3.

As a site, AO3 has a lot of functionalities built in. But it can’t do everything. That’s where user scripts come in handy.
User scripts are a kind of browser extension or plugin. They work inside your browser, be it Chrome or Safari or something else, and they add functionalities to existing websites. Think Xkit here on tumblr.
In the AO3 FAQ, there’s a page where they list a ton of different user-created plugins to improve your AO3 experience. These plugins can do a lot of the things that people regularly ask AO3 to make a part of the site. If there’s something you wish you could do on AO3, check that list. You might find what you’re looking for.
A small selection of the things user scripts can do for you:
save your filters so you don’t need to enter them every time you search
save your searches and then track them so you can run all of your searches at once and find updates or new works
blacklist terms and hide works that contain those words so that you don’t see them
hide creators or terms - the AO3 version of tumblr saviour
add a download button to the blurb page (the page of search results or tag results) so you can download without clicking into the fic
There are a lot more available on that page and people are creating more all the time! Just recently, @starrymeta created a user script to make commenting with reaction gifs easier.
Most mobile browsers don’t allow for extensions and plugins, so these will be more useful for desktop users. But if you have an Android device, Firefox allows them while Chrome does not.

[...] Peggy was so certain she would never see Steve Rogers again. A certainty that saddened her, much to her surprise. How did she come to value him so highly and so suddenly?
Plenty of GIs tried to court her before and she paid them all no mind. Duty reigned supreme in her heart and she was no schoolgirl, no boy chaser. She valued her purpose above all else, especially over the fleeting interests of men.
Not that Steve tried to seduce her like those rascals, to be fair. He never leered, just admired. No flirting, just sheer honesty. And, God, what honesty that was. As she stood in line, her mind went, without permission, to that car ride to the Brooklyn laboratory just weeks ago.
He, so earnest and flustered, had called her beautiful…
Anyway, she had a job to do.
Yet, there she was, in line to see Captain America’s USO show in New York instead. On opening night, no less!
It was ridiculous.
Lately, her life was just that. Absolute poppycock. However, Margaret Elizabeth Carter did not cause the ridiculousness; she only experienced or witnessed it… until today.
She was being ridiculous. No one else.
Actually, she and Senator Brandt. He used the Allied Forces’ only Super Soldier for pantomime instead of fighting Nazis. Poor Steve. He got all he sought after and, somehow, lost everything.
They all did.
Erskine, who became a close friend, had died, as had the Super Soldier army idea. Outmatched and facing Nazis wielding incredible, maybe alien, weaponry, the Allies could only oppose them with unremarkable men and weapons.
Peggy wasn’t transferred to LA, in the end. She actually had started working as Chief of the DC office four months ago.
She took over from the previous one, Chief Kevin Kelly, after an early retirement due to a cardiac arrest he barely survived. Phillips pulled all the strings for that to happen, masking her name as M. Carter in all the paperwork to deceive the higher-ups.
It wasn’t a difficult task in the end as of all four US SSR offices, the national headquarters had the worst performance. Meanwhile, New York had the best, and to no wonder considering it had Peggy Carter among their men until recently. Emphasis on men, as Peggy was still the only female operative in the whole agency.
Despite her being great to the NY office, the NY office wasn’t great to Peggy in her final days there. Following Jack’s assassination attempt, Chief Flynn took over and it was like she got back to square one when it came to her job prospects.
Worse than square one, perhaps. Chief Dooley, for all his flaws, was somewhat protective of her. In a very condescending way, yes, mostly due to his respect for Captain Rogers, but protective regardless. Eventually, he started to respect Peggy because of her own merit. Then he died.
Jack Thompson, her second SSR boss, was… Jack Thompson. In all that name meant, whatever it meant. She wasn’t sure to this day, years after knowing the man. It never felt like he was her Chief, it felt more like Dooley took the day off and had Jack temporarily take his place like he used to when he was alive.
Thompson never treated her as a subordinate, either. It was more like a big brother who relished his momentary authority over his little sister as their parents were out of town, something she experienced for the first time in her life. Jack was no Michael, that was for sure.
She liked him better than Flynn, still. Her last boss simply thought she was stupid, which is something Dooley or Thompson never even considered. He made sure she was useless in the office, almost out of spite. Combining his treatment of her with her engagement with Daniel, Peggy couldn’t wait to be transferred to LA.
She had no idea she wouldn’t end up in New York or Los Angeles, but rather in Washington instead. As a Chief instead of an Agent, no less.
The transition wasn’t easy. The translation, neither. The D.C. men didn’t take well to having to respond to a female Chief and moving was always stressful. Nothing would beat the hassle of moving countries, but in the span of a year, Peggy lived in three different places in three different cities.
No matter how inconvenient it was to move once again, living alone in her own house made it worth it. No rules like in the Griffith and no need to depend on other people like when she lived in a Stark residence.
Technically, she still did in that last regard as the house was actually Howard’s. She was leasing it from him, but only technically, as Peggy made sure that her rent would amount to the price of the house after a period of time.
Howard was unhappy about this but yielded. Granted, she was quite certain that he lied about the cost; if depended on him, she wouldn’t pay a dime. Howard was like that when it came to gifts, he would buy you a house like it was nothing. And it was, for him. It really was.
Besides her modest house, he owned a mansion as he was living in DC as well. If you would ask him, he would say he was bored of NY and LA and wanted fresh new air. A lie.
The truth was, he was working with Peggy and Phillips to create the SSR’s successor. It was a complete secret and the rest of the staff was unaware their agency was in its last days.
It was time; the war was over. War was different, too. It wasn’t a fight between soldiers anymore, now it was between spies. With rumours that the Soviets were close to making their own Bomb, the necessity of a new agency suited for modern times was greater than ever.
However, while the government had no plans to continue the SSR, it didn’t have intentions of developing a replacement for it either. That was entirely Phillip’s idea and he recruited Howard and Peggy for it to come to fruition. He would take advantage of the SSR’s timely death and repurpose its corpse: adopt its orphaned agents, retake its abandoned structures, and continue its interrupted missions.
For that, Phillips would use his military connections and his new ranking of General. Peggy would take care of the spy-craft and Howard would be responsible for the technology and the financing. Mostly, though, Howard Stark and his Stark Industries were a leverage card in diplomatic relationships.
Leverage was needed because, unlike the SSR which was just a governmental collaboration between the USA and the UK, the new agency would be international and semi-private. Countries that joined in would have the incentive of access to cheaper and exclusive Stark technology, something irresistible in the ongoing Cold War.
There was a long way to go until that, granted. For now, Peggy would train to be one of the heads of a spy agency by being Chief of an SSR office. That was why Phillips was so determined to help Peggy with her promotion in the first place, having that position in her resume was a way of selling the idea of a female Director.
It was really a tough sell. Not because Peggy in particular wasn’t up to the task, but rather because men already have a hard time considering women their peers, let alone their superiors. The agents in her office would say so, plus a few jokes behind her back.
She had heard them all. Betty Carver. Serving under the Captain. Red, white, and blue love bruises. Raising his American Flag. The list went on.
At first, everybody hated her except Agent Kermit Kelly, Chief Kelly's younger son, and she suspected his obvious crush on her played a part in that. With time and her professionalism — not her personality —, the men started accepting her more and more. Far from enough, better than nothing.
Things got way better and somehow way worse when Dugan and Jones moved there. The Howling Commandos were disbanded and its five remaining members were relocated: Dugan to DC, Sawyer to Houston, Falsworth and Pinkerton to London. And Jones…
Gabe moved to DC, but not because of the SSR. He decided to join civilian life alongside Morita, another Washington resident, and start a doctorate at his Alma Mater Howard University right there in the city.
Things got better because, after a long time, she would be among friends that were fighters. As much as she loved Angie, the Jarvises, and Howard, there were some things in her life they couldn’t even grasp. She missed that type of connection, that understanding.
Things got worse because she had yet another man, Dugan, ‘under her sheets’. According to the bullpen, she had slept with Captain America — true, but it was none of their business —, Phillips — so she could get the job —, Howard — for money — and the Commandos.
All of them. During the war and after.
And Timothy… He didn’t help. He was all heart, all little restraint. Every comment about Peggy got under his skin, which didn’t help the affair allegations. He even punched the worst wanker in the office, Kelly’s other son, after he had enough of him, which was actually very little. Peggy had to punish Dugan because of that.
Nevertheless, she would be lying if she didn’t appreciate the gesture.
It’s not like she could punch Agent Kenneth Kelly herself being his superior, no matter how much she wanted to. One of the downsides of being Chief, bummer.
She liked where her life was at, at the end of the day, regardless of all those nuisances and obstacles. She had her own house, she was her own boss, and she was forging her own path, all by herself.
