A kyric in the woods

I don’t remember how much about these I’ve posted here. This is my more fantasy-focused open species, Kyrics.

The forehead horns and wings some kyrics possess are a throwback to the semi-immortal beings they descended from, who usually possessed both. Both are now rare but are usually present as a latent gene that becomes active if the associated magic is practiced at a young age (the two forms of magic they’re still capable of being mind-sharing and transformation); those that practice mind-sharing can form forehead horns, and those that practice transformation gain optional wings.

There is no social status association with possessing one of these traits, besides showing that one worked hard. Most kyrics appreciate that the loss of horns and wings make them more alike to the unknowably earthly creatures their mythical ancestors arose from.

So the evolutionary of this species goes like:

Ungulate-like herd mammal develops intraspecies telepathy -> escalates to something like a unicorn, full sentience and godlike disdain for other species -> contact and appreciation for other intelligent species on earth physically alters some of them and weakens their magic -> immortal counterparts use them as messengers with mortals but they quietly return to the homeland of their species to try to become their own culture and people -> they lose the wings and horns in most cases and regain the regional variations that would have been typical to their most distant ancestors
