I got Dedue a while back and I’ve loved him so much! I just got Byleth yesterday, and she’s so cute I’m gonna scream. The details on both of them are just so perfect.

People will be like “this movie is evil and gross because it depicts a predatory relationship” and then you watch the movie in question and it’s about how preying on young women is bad and impacts their lives negatively

I think an important factor to Rhea hunting down the original Ten Elites, besides their culpability in assisting Nemesis, is that if Jeralt and others are any evidence, the First Generation of Crest-Bearers (folks who have drank dragon blood fresh from the veins) have a prolonged lifespan measured in centuries. The first-generation ancestors of Adrestia's nobility did not raise any suspicions because they likely all died in battle (Wilhelm died during the war against Nemesis, and his son died too on the year it ended, likely of unnatural causes if we had to make assumptions), Heroes Relics seem to outclass Sacred Weapons in terms of sheer power so one can figure that the nobles who sided with Seiros (like Wilhelm and his son) were likely on the backfoot for a while. This makes the original Ten Elites all the more dangerous because waiting for them to die of natural causes is likely not an option, if Maurice is any indication, they all could have survived the millenia between the War of Heroes and the present setting of Fódlan. All the more so, they would be living memory contradicting the narrative that underpins society as well as ancient warriors with strong claims to power within the system of dynastic inheritance.

The original Ten Elites being semi-mythological figures makes sense, the War of Heroes lasted almost a century and presumably all of them were still fighting in peak phsyical condition (the same for Seiros and her fellow surviving Children of the Goddess). Imagine being a common footsoldier, watching political leaders like the Emperor of Adrestia and even his son dying over the generations of conflict, but the Saints and the Elites remain an earth-shaking constant through the battlefields. Your father and grandfather and possibly even great-grandfather (over 90 years is a long time) could have each been killed by the same damn person, regardless of whichever side you were on. Nemesis could have trampled generations of would be king-slayers, ditto for Seiros and families dedicated to killing a saint. This war had 15 main characters (10 Elites, 5 Saints) and everyone else was collateral damage.

You can kind of see how a religion came out of this.

as doofy as it looks i think dedue's Academy arc haircut is a really nice bit of subtle character work

because like -- who's cutting his hair? he can't ask dimitri to do it, and who else would dedue let near his face with scissors? he's gotta be doing it himself.

so: he trims his bangs short enough to stay out of his eyes, and the rest of his hair just long enough to tie back, which is as simply as hacking off the end of the ponytail when it gets too long. appearance isn't a priority, because dedue doesn't care about himself enough to do more than the bare minimum. his body is a tool at best and an inconvenience at worst, so what does it matter what it looks like? why worry about "looking good" when everyone's already decided what they think of him?

he's profoundly depressed is the point, and it shows in his design work

contrast post-timeskip (in either game) when he comes back with a deliberate, neater, higher-maintenance haircut -- the side shave in Houses, the tight braids in Hopes. post-timeskip he wants to live; he cares about himself; there are people whose opinions he cares about, but more importantly he feels like taking care of his appearance for his own sake.

like. if you're beholden to a set of conditions that must either be followed or subverted in order to produce a favourable outcome or avoid unfavourable consequences (or led to believe you are), subject to the decree of a higher authority whose statements you are expected to accept as the absolute, unbiased, factual truth, and structure your existence in accordance with, is that not just prison? you can't convince me that isn't just an elaborate psychologically abusive prison.
