I’m going to p r o v e it to you
What are your headcanons about me?
Just curious.

She hid her face against his side, shivering a bit but nonetheless deciding to trust him. She knew they were hollow words, but she wanted to believe them. For the moment, that would have to be enough. "I’ve never changed the future before… I’m scared."
Part of Iroh wanted to give her the dry comfort that anything would be an improvement from her life, but he knew that wasn’t strictly true, and the universe had a way of punishing those kinds of generalizations; fearing spending too long in contemplation, Iroh adjusted the subject. "Now, where does your brother go to school?"
"Number forty eight," she said, turning to lead the way there. "Just basic public education, but...at least it's free," she said with a shrug, then winced as it agitated her shoulders. "Even if I go in with you, with all these bandages they'll still buy that there's been an emergency."

She nodded her head. “That’s good to hear. Did you find out anything interesting the past couple of days?" she asked curiously, drifting a bit closer to him. He made her feel safe, and so Becca was quite shameless about wanting to be near him. Even if she couldn’t quite explain why that was.
At her question, Rin just shook his head, sighing lightly. “Nothin’ yet," he answered with a small shrug, “But hopefully I’ll have somethin’ at some point." Well, that’s what he really hoped. But of course they’d try. “Oh, an’ how did that food last ya an’ yer brother?"
"We're making it stretch out," she said, nodding her head. She offered him a smile, even though he had bad news for her. It wasn't so bad, really. Because...she wasn't alone. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, fidgeting a bit. "I guess there's nothing to say, then..." Still, she didn't want to just run off because he didn't have any news for her. He'd tried, at least.
wash away my sins;
Becca was unsure about moving into his arms, but she leaned on him. Many of the wounds were fresh, and she hissed slightly, reaching up to readjust his arms as he held her. ”I could get her arrested…but then my brother and I would be orphans, and we’d be separated to go into foster care,” she explains quietly, shivering a bit at the thought. ”It…was always just me alone, by myself…if I had to protect him without help, then all I had to do was take the abuse myself…then he’d be safe, and as long as he was safe, that was what mattered. But I’m tired,” she explains, shivering again as she clung to him. ”I’m so tired of it…but I can’t abandon my brother…”
Rin wasn’t sure what to say to that. He didn’t touch her any more when she hissed; he didn’t want to cause her pain. He also didn’t know whether it would have been right for him to voice his opinion; that wasn’t what she had asked for, and he didn’t know enough of her circumstances anyways. But when he thought of everything Yukio had gone through for his sake, it made bile rise in his throat. He’d always known there had been no other way to protect them — but there was a part of him that had always kept asking, ‘why couldn’t they consider whether I wanted any of this? why did it have to be only Yukio suffering?’ Did she think she was doing her brother good? Did she think that he didn’t suffer when he saw her covered in bruises? Yet, what he ended up saying in a low voice, was, “You wouldn’t necessarily need to be separated… Me ‘n my brother were brought up together, too, by our foster dad." Even if their circumstances had been different…
"We don't have anyone that'd take us in, though," she said quietly. "I mean, they don't do orphanages any more, but without someone to step forward and say they'll take us both, we're at the mercy of the system and wherever an opening turns up first. If they're different places...we might get lost and never find each other again," she said sadly, putting her head down on his chest and pressing her eyes shut. "I've seen it happen so many times...every time I look at the future to see if it'd work, I see kids getting split up..."

The following day, Becca wasn’t there. The day after, however, she had returned, though her eyes were a bit bruised and her glasses had a bit of tape on them. Nonetheless, she was smiling cheerfully, as if nothing had happened.
Rin made sure to check the day after when he had some free time after his classes, but she wasn’t there that day. Not wanting to worry himself too much, he decided to check back the next day, hoping to be a bit luckier. When the next day came and he saw her there, he smiled a bit in relief before noticing the condition that she was in, a worried expression on his face. “W-What happened t’ ya?”
"I fell," she answered, the lie falling easily from her lips despite how painfully obvious it was. She forced on a smile, determined to not let it show. "How are you?" she asked, trying to shift the focus away from herself.
"Ya fell?" Rin asked her curiously, lightly raising an eyebrow. Somehow he could tell something was off, but only because it reminded him of when he had used that same excuse before Shiro died. He would’ve pestered her to answer, but when she asked how he was doing, he knew she was avoiding it. He would just wait for the time being. " ‘m fine. Not doin’ too badly."
She nodded her head. "That's good to hear. Did you find out anything interesting the past couple of days?" she asked curiously, drifting a bit closer to him. He made her feel safe, and so Becca was quite shameless about wanting to be near him. Even if she couldn't quite explain why that was.

"He’s twelve, but he’s smarter than me already. He knows a lot more about maths and all sorts of things," she said cheerfully. "He knows science and all sorts of everything. I’m really proud of him," she added. "He’s going to be…" She cut off abruptly, eyes going wide as she realised something. "The future’s going to change…."
Iroh gave her expression a quick study as it turned; given a power, there was no question that whatever seemed to trouble her was in those notebooks; thus far, her foresight proved accurate unless there was conscious interference in his experiments. Iroh gently patted her head and stroked her hair in reassurance. "There there, it’ll be alright." Hollow words, but many people believed them anyway, preferring them to the truth.
She hid her face against his side, shivering a bit but nonetheless deciding to trust him. She knew they were hollow words, but she wanted to believe them. For the moment, that would have to be enough. "I've never changed the future before... I'm scared."
"I have," she said cheerfully, backing off a bit more so she could get it out and open it up. She revealed to him a portrait of Koneko the Hero, bravely battling a host of demons on the bridge. "What do you think?" she asked, grinning at him excitedly.
"Uh… it’s uh…" The boy who always had a plan, always had an opinion, always had words was completely stuck.
"It’s lovely!" Great job, Koneko.
She grinned at that, more concerned about the fact that he liked it than she was about whether or not he was eloquent in expressing that. She smiled for him, and turned a few pages to reveal a portrait of the two of them, Koneko as the Mad Hatter and Becca as Alice. "And this one, too."

"That might be better," she agreed, unaware of the thoughts in Iroh’s head. However, it was a fortuitous coincidence that her thoughts were quite similar in topic. "It’d probably be better if he wasn’t away at some school when his powers come in. I…still haven’t told him. I don’t know how," she admitted, hanging her head.
Iroh nodded at the news; if he didn’t have any powers at present and there was no past history of them, it was unlikely to be passed down by blood. Still, he wasn’t about to leave the boy alone with his mother, especially since Baobao seemed to care for him, or at least liked talking about him. "How old is your brother? It’s important to make friends when you’re young, but if he’s a teenager already, some one-on-one should be good for him."
"He's twelve, but he's smarter than me already. He knows a lot more about maths and all sorts of things," she said cheerfully. "He knows science and all sorts of everything. I'm really proud of him," she added. "He's going to be..." She cut off abruptly, eyes going wide as she realised something. "The future's going to change...."

"Why don’t you just run by the school and tell them there’s been an emergency and I’ve had to be taken to the hospital? It’s true, the teachers won’t care. It’s not like he goes to a fancy school where they expect to do more than glorified babysitting," she said with a shrug. "Will he go to a better school? Where they actually teach for learning, instead of saying empty words to kids that aren’t paying attention?"
Iroh nodded at her proposed solution, not personally familiar with public schooling in the United Republic. "I suppose, though I could probably have him privately tutored if you think that’d be better; he’s your brother, after all." He shrugged; unless the ability was hereditary, the boy didn’t greatly interest him, though he did sympathize with her urge to protect her brother.

"He should be," she said with a nod. "Do you have a plan?" she asked, cheering up significantly when she saw Iroh was willing to pay extra for the doctors to keep poor records. She slipped her hand into his, all annoyance at him having evaporated along with the pain that the healers had pulled out of her body.
Glad to see her in a more cooperative mood, Iroh held her much smaller hand back as he thought through what he would do next; they couldn’t just drop by his school in mid-morning and grab him, which necessitated some waiting. "Can you pick him up around lunch time, or should we wait until it’s actually out for the day?" Part of him did not care for the prospect of becoming a double kidnapper, even from such a singularly unworthy guardian, but the boy was necessary to secure her cooperation, which seemed to come more easily now.

Finally she came out again, more bandages than clothes on her torso. Waterbending had managed to take away the worst of the fresh wounds, but many of them were far too old to remove. Still, Baobao didn’t seem too worried about how she looked, as long as she could get her shirt on over it. "They’re asking awkward questions," she said, as soon as she was close enough to Iroh to whisper. "We’d better get moving."
The prince’s eyes widened at the sight of the expanse of bandages around her, though he nodded at her whisper. "What kind of questions?" They had the source of the burns covered, though he was still unsure if they would buy it.
"How long it’s been going on." She gave him a pointed look, hoping he’d get why that was a problem—it would blow their story of a one-off encounter with the Agni Kais right out of the water. "We need to get out of here. It’s the other reason I never come here…"
Iroh gave a quick nod and got up to pay for the procedure, leaving a generous bonus to ensure the staff wouldn’t insist on strict record of the visit, given the suspicious nature of the girl’s injuries. Returning to Baobao, Iroh leaned in to whisper in return, “Is your brother at school right now?"
"He should be," she said with a nod. "Do you have a plan?" she asked, cheering up significantly when she saw Iroh was willing to pay extra for the doctors to keep poor records. After watching Baobai disappear into the patient’s area, Iroh slowly scanned the waiting room for a seat and quickly picked out the most suitable for him not that he figured reading the lurid tabloid magazine’s on the table would be any less uncomfortable than the budget seats the place relied on during the tough economic times; his pictures had even managed to squirm their way in. Still, what really caught his eye was the occasional visible motion through the small window in the door, tricking him into thinking it was her each time.

"No, but I’ve stolen supplies from here before," she answered honestly. "Last time I actually got looked at by a doctor was…when I was about two? A little before," she said with a shrug. Medicine was too expensive to bother with.
Iroh nodded grimly, noting it only made sense to check the girl for any health problems before investing in her further. "Well, if you don’t have anything you need to do, I think you should get one after those burns get treated. If they ask where they come from, just say they’re from the Agni-Kais."
"I know how to lie, believe me," she said with a roll of her eyes. Once they were inside, she stayed quiet and withdrawn, doing as the doctors instructed her and keeping her head down. Until it came time to take her shirt all the way off. She whimpered, but slowly did, pulling it up and off and revealing the intricate network of scars that covered her body. 'THIEF', 'SLUT', and 'CUNT' decorated her back as old wounds, but fresh across her lower back was also the word 'WHORE', and those were in addition to the myriad burns that discoloured her skin all over. They petered out where her skin would be exposed if she wore normal clothing, but she had a decidedly foul expression about having the extent of the damage revealed. Some of the burns were infected, due to being covered over without a chance to breathe, and not having antibiotics for them, including where Iroh had touched her the other day.
"How long has this been going on?" the doctor asked, clearly disturbed by the abuses she'd suffered.
"Long enough that I know telling you much about it will get 'snitch' on there somewhere, maybe on my face if I'm not lucky. Just fix it and let it go."
pencilpremonition started following you
She sighed, hanging her head. "Probably, but…I’m not good at all of this…I just want to have somewhere safe to sleep and not get burned any more. Anything after that is fanciness that’s wasted. I’m easy to keep happy and easy to move around, I don’t want to have to mess with the rest of it," she said tiredly. "I feel like I’m getting wrapped up in something way bigger than me."
Iroh noted that her final statement of her goal didn’t mention her brother, but decided not to press her on it; she probably aimed to deceive herself far more than him, and if she was going to be part of his symphony, keeping her wrapped up in her delusion would be useful. He avoided the subject entirely when he saw the hospital ahead, and pointed to it. "There it is; have you had a checkup in a while?"
"No, but I've stolen supplies from here before," she answered honestly. "Last time I actually got looked at by a doctor was...when I was about two? A little before," she said with a shrug. Medicine was too expensive to bother with.
