Writing a Successful Introduction By Holly Hutcheson

The introduction to a story is the key to continuous book sales and grasping the reader’s attention time and time again. When you first pick up a book, the first couple pages, or the first chapter (whichever you choose for your own personal book), is the deciding factor of whether they choose to read the material or put it down. Every successful book has an introduction that attracts the reader and instantly captivates their attention. When writing the perfect introduction to your story, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure it is truly enticing! First, to write a successful introduction, you should start with an enticing image. Write about something that would catch a reader’s eye and encourage them to keep on reading. For example, you could start with a wild action scene where the main character is in immediate danger fighting for their life or family. This exciting and captivating intro is definitely not boring and is sure to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. With an intro like that they won’t want to put it down!

When writing the introduction, you also want to be sure to set the mood or theme for your story. Prepare your reader for what they should expect out of the rest of your story. You don’t have to give away all the emotion, but give them a taste for what you want your story to be about. In school, we learn about the thesis statement and summarizing the basis of our story in one sentence. When writing an actual book, a single sentence describing your entire book is not necessary. However, do use the intro as a chance to explain some of the more lengthy details that could be a little boring, but essential to the outline or basis of the story in general. For example, if the story is about an old man reflecting on the turmoil of events in his life, emphasize the nostalgic emotion of the story in the introduction. If the book follows the life of a troubled but hopeful teenager, show the upbeat emotion of this character. When setting the mood, make your reader feel something. If, for example, your character is going through hardships, such as their sibling passing or their mother is ill, the reader will instantly sympathize. No matter the mood of your specific book, be sure to establish it well, giving them the feel for your story.

Another important part of the introduction in a story is establishing the setting, and be SPECIFC. Whether it may be the cold arctic tundra of northern Russia, a quiet remote island in the Philippines, or the average day in a mid-western city mall, be sure to describe the setting well. Put the reader right in the middle of it, write with passion. Then re-read your work, can you picture the setting easily in your head? Chances are if you cannot picture it, neither will your reader! They key to writing a gripping into is to make the reader feel as if they have experiencing these events or places at the same time as your character is.

Now, during the intro is also the usual time you introduce a main character. When introducing a character, try using one the reader may be able to relate too. Maybe you open describing in detail the average early morning routine of that character. For example,

“She lies still, eyes still closed under her cozy, cocoon like sheets wrapped around her tightly while the alarm beats nosily next to her; breaking the silence of the early morning like lightening. She smacks the alarm loudly, ceasing its buzzing. She slips out of bed lazily, and begin her way down the dimly light hallway towards the smell of freshly brewed Columbian Dark Roast. The sun has just begun to peak over the horizon, and another day has begun.”

The heavy description in the previous paragraph easily allows the reader to place themselves in the middle of this early morning. When describing something like this, feel free to include something the average reader could easily relate too. Like struggling to get up in the morning or the drone of another work day began. This will make the reader feel familiar with your characters and what they might be experiencing.

A strong introduction, or the first few pages to your story is usually the deciding factor on whether or not a potential reader decides to purchase or not to purchase your novel. The introduction also sets the mood for the rest of your story. Usually the reader will take the emotion they get from the beginning of your story and apply it to how they perceive the rest of your book. Be sure to be getting across the point you really want in those first few pages! Follow these few tips to write an intro that is truly captivating, enticing, and will guarantee success of your book for years to come!

Mala Shah: Winning Ways to Empower Yourself

            Every day in life, we set goals for ourselves and our futures. Then, we set out to find a path to accomplish them. Whether these are extremely short term goals such as making it into that dead end job every day, or whether it’s more long term, such as finally publishing that hit selling novel. Let me ask you, what determines whether a goal is out of your reach?  Usually, the answer comes down to whether you truly BELIEVE you can accomplish it or not. If you can never imagine or dream of yourself getting there, how will you ever find a way to actually do it? Chances are, you’re not.

           So first, what are our beliefs? In PenCraft Books newest hit series, Dial A Guru, Awaken Your True Potential, Mala Shah writes a chapter on “Winning Ways to Empower Yourself.” In this chapter, she states,

“A belief is an internal feeling that something is true, even though that belief may be unverified or absurd; like the world is flat! It is an acceptance that something exists, or is true, even without proof.”

As a child, we start to adopt these certain beliefs based on the influences around us. Parents, siblings, and teachers all have large impacts on the mindset we grow up with. When they tell us the world is round, we believe them! Now whether this is actually true or not isn’t always relevant, this is coming from a person we trust. We base our beliefs around what we experience and see around us as children, and take those lessons on into adulthood. If we spend our entire lives believing we are not good enough to accomplish something, we most likely will never even try. Those are the types of thoughts Mala’s chapter focuses on identifying in yourself, and redirecting them into something more positive.

Because of this, just because we are told to believe something from someone we trust, does not always mean we should follow it blindly. This is where Mala goes in to describe how old beliefs, can also be transformed into new ones; and how these old beliefs may be limiting us in many aspects of our adult life! Mala uses the example in her chapter that experts believed for many years that it was impossible for the human body to exert itself to run a mile in under 4 minutes, which ultimately meant a lot of athletes did not even attempt to do so. A trusted scientist revealed these findings, and most athletes simply trusted him, instead of pushing their limits to reach the seemingly impossible. Then, in 1954, Roger Bannister did run a mile in under four minutes. He set a record and shattered that limiting belief. Since then, every athlete who has competed in the one mile race has managed to complete it in less than four minutes. As a part of training, Bannister said he persistently visualized the achievement that he wanted to obtain, in order to create a sense of certainty in his mind and body. Then, he did it!

In this empowering and hopeful chapter of “Awaken Your True Potential”, Mala goes into specific detail of how YOU may have limiting beliefs that you are applying to your life that is keeping you from truly reaching your full potential!

Take a look at the recent goals you have set for yourself. Are they truly challenging you to be the best you can be? This chapter helps you to discover what’s truly important to you: your values & your passion.  It talks about life planning and goal setting – and introduces the smart system (specific, measured, action-orientated, realistic, and timed GOALS) In order to accomplish things in your life, Bettina walks you through the course of getting in touch with what you truly wish to accomplish, and setting goals to get there. She also introduces the 4 secrets of success in goal setting.

Now, this is where Ruby Mcquire with “Be Brave – Be Authentic – Be Fabulous!” helps you to get in touch with your true self. Though out our lives we are continuously influenced by the ones around us. In this chapter, she helps us to establish our values, who we are, and what our purpose is. She also introduces the idea of practicing self-care through establishing boundaries and learning to say ‘no’ when we want to. Setting aside times each and every single day to look after you – YOU MATTER!  

Next is chapter 5, “Gaming Strategies for Personal and Professional Success” by An Coppens. She talks about how to increase personal productivity and business growth using gaming “cheats” and hacks analogies. Hacks are basically short cuts. Essentially, hacks ensure you achieve whatever you want to achieve in life and business, but faster. When she refers to hacks, she means finding positive shortcuts that produce even greater productivity and success fast, rather than the negative actions of someone hacking into a system for information.  She uses the example, “in a business stand point for example, engage your customers or your readers through social media posts.”

In Chapter 6, “Our Seven‐Year‐Cycle of Transformation” ildikó Miklós talks about,             “If you were to watch a film of your own life, which part would be the most exciting? Which part would you live again and which are those that you hope never to repeat? How easily can you recall particular milestones, or recognize the markers that brought significant changes into your life?”

This chapter is an exercise work book that helps you outline the important milestones of your life and ultimately measure the growth you have experienced as a person and the transitions you have endured. It focuses on where you have experienced growth in different fields such as health status, financials, spiritual development and more.

In Chapter 7, learn the “7 Keys to Mindfulness Meditation: A guide to the mindful art of living”, written by Elaine Rudnicki. She talks about how mediation is proven to improve self‐confidence, focus and emotional stability, improve all of your cognitive functions such as your concentration, memory, and resilience to stress ‐ all the while boosting your immune function. It takes you through steps of how meditation works, how to incorporate it into your daily life, and to understand it and use it properly.

How to Successfully Market Your Book

 How do you begin selling your book, when you yourself have not even written it yet? Believe it or not, now is the best time to start!

Whether your book is still in its infant stages of a rough outline and scribbled notes, or you’ve already published your book and just are waiting to make that first sale, it is never too soon to begin increasing awareness about your newest book! However, reaching your audience in a affordable way, while still being effective in the hopes of selling an actual book, is where things begin to get a little hairy.

Many marketing efforts can cause thousands just to get your name out there, many a times not even yielding a measureable return on investment. Now, when people usually think marketing, they think TV, radio, or magazine ads. All of which can break your bank fairly quickly with large initial costs and offer no guarantee you will sell a book!

For all you still “up and coming” authors, we have narrowed down a list of marketing efforts you can begin implementing right away, no matter what stage of writing you are in. These tools to promote your book are cheap, affordable, but always very effective!

1.      Pick a Target Market

 First off, you want to identify who your target market is. Who do you want to be reading your book, or who do think would want to read your book? Identify who those people are and how you are going to reach them!

Think about your target audience. What do they usually read? (Hopefully books similar in content to yours!) Where do they usually do it? The key is to get to know your potential customers. The more you know about them and their daily lives, the easier it will be to market to them. Say they usually go to coffee shops, hanging flyers at coffee shops would be a beneficial, and basically free, way to spread awareness of your book to those customers!

2.      Network Marketing

Word of mouth marketing has been a sure proof way to spread information for a long time now. When someone recommends their favorite restaurant to you, you are much more likely to give that restaurant a chance then if someone said their food was terrible, or if nobody ever mentioned it to you at all. Use every moment throughout the day you can to talk about your book! No matter whether you’re standing in line at the grocery store, or talking to a co-worker, use these chances to raise awareness about your book. You wrote, or are writing, a FANTASTIC book! Tell everyone about it, and be excited! The more awareness and excitement you can spread, the more people will talk about it. The more people who talk about, the more potential customers you may have!

3.      Digital Marketing

Now, when it comes to digital marketing, technology is your best friend. The world of digital marketing today is huge, and always continuing to grow. With nearly every person owning a smart phone, anyone can access the internet at any given point in any location. The internet allows you to reach your customers and establish a reputation with them, without ever getting them through the book store or wherever you would potentially sell your book. First, start with a website. A website about your book gives you a chance to captivate and entice your reader without getting them to actually purchase your book. Educate them on what your book may be about, who it would benefit, and why they should read it! Allowing E-Commerce on this site would also be a huge vantage point. This lets you have your very own book store, but your book store is located everywhere that has internet access! By selling your books through e-commerce, you save time, money, and can very broadly increase the amount and type of consumers your targeting to sell too!

           A blog and Facebook way is just another way to build an online presence and reputation for your customer to learn more about you as an author, and about your book! Posting weekly blog and Facebook posts help to engage your potential customer and keep them thinking about you. If your book is about living a positive life, when your potential customer is feeling down, you want them to first think about your book they read about today while surfing the web. An online presence keeps you relevant in the growing market!

4.      Never Stop Marketing

Even after you’ve sold your first book, or your 100th book, keep the buzz going! Always continue to look for new ways and angles to promote your book. As I mentioned before, the market is always growing in changing, no matter the business you are in. Keeping your name, and your books relevant is more important than ever. At your first book signing, your pumped and excited to tell everyone about your best book yet! Although, after your 50th book signing, I understand how that same spark isn’t still there. This is when you should start looking for new ways to not only target new customers, but engage your past ones! If you never had an online blog, start one! And start engaging your customers with weekly tips or blasts from your newest book. If you never had a Facebook page for your book, now would be the time to start one. If you can keep the excitement going, you will continue to make sales!

           Always remember, you wrote a fantastic book. Now is the time to show everyone else just how great it really is! Get your name out there, and captivate and engage your readers time and time again.
