it's interesting to look at wintrow in comparison to fitz because on the surface they're both these young boys forced into a life of violence that they do not want. but wintrow having these strong convictions from his prior life makes fitz's lack of guiding principles so much clearer in retrospect. young fitz is so much a creature of instinct and impulse. they take almost opposite paths in that way, where we see fitz learning how to take action for himself, live life the way he thinks is right. so far, wintrow has been breaking down a bit, learning how to compromise on his convictions to survive the world.
