My most popular post has received a lot of arguments lately, so I figured I’d respond to the most common points people bring up.
Sources:
Carrie Fisher on her costumes
what supermodels wear in hell
on Padme’s wardrobe
to get a general gist of Queen Jamillia’s and Oola’s screen time, here are the scripts for Attack of the Clones (Jamillia is in 359 word scene) and Return of the Jedi (Oola is in scenes that add up to 275 words)
Star Wars Bechedel Test results here
We are old enough to know we deserve more.
So the only argument I see here is “Bleeeeeh sexualized it offends me”….and what else? Are they bland characters as well? Are they just blow dolls that people just fuck and dump it afterward?
Complaining about sexialization alone is really weak because…what is the problem? I could understand if the character has little to no personality, but when it is not the case why are you so offended by that? She is a well develop character with a strong personality and multiple layers as it should be, isn’t that enough?
You ignore what really matters, the characterization of that character…so by rejecting the characters based only on their looks…aren’t you being superficial? Aren’t you being like those disgusting white cis male you hate so much?
Who is the real piece of shit who objectifies women here?
Your double standards are showing.
Ugh.
Even STAR WARS is not free from being infested by Feminist ideology or complaints.
I understand the part that Carrie Fisher didn’t like the costumes she got, I can sympathize with her on that, but she wasn’t being objectified.
The point of the scene where she’s in her famous bikini is actually to make a point in the narrative.
Jabba the Hutt was a kingpin of crime. an evil, corrupt asshole that was rightfully taken down by Luke and his allies. He sold sex slaves of all kinds, killed those he considered his rivals, had his own bounty hunters and a glactic mobster gang. And also was on a planet he pretty much owned, yes?
He could have put Leia to death by feeding her to the rancor, but if he had, how would Leia have got out?
Luke only took him down because he was prepared for his plans to go wrong.
Jabba was presented as a unlikable villain, even if brief, that made fans feel good when Leia HERSELF finally killed him with the very chain she had.
That alone proves there wasn’t any objectification.
So there, I’m not as big a star wars fan as I used to be, but I still love star wars and want to relive it when the new trilogy comes out, I would very much not want Feminists using it to further their own political ideology and killing the narrative creativity writers should have.
Problematic writing is problematic writing regardless of how “awesome” it was. I grew up on Star Wars and watching it as an adult Female who’s post-human body centric … Yeah it’s not hard to see the problems. The stories are good, own up to the bad directing and written decisions. Like sorry but nah. This shit is problematic. It doesn’t ruin Star Wars , if this ruined Star Wars for you than clearly you see and benefit from the problem so are adverse to ANY change- or you’re mad about the problem. Fanboys lol. Denying sociopolitical sciences like the creationists deny geological sciences. Loooool
goddamn, as someone who loves star wars too much, this shit is so problematic in 100000 different ways. like, cool, i’m glad all you white boys get cool laser swords and gr9 sidekicks and hella cool outfits that don’t bare your tummy. but shut the fuck up for once in your life and let other people who ALSO like this saga (and probably know more than you) actually call out the shit that tries to push us out of star wars
yes, leia strangling jabba was fucking awesome — go her killing her oppressor! but just consuming ANY OTHER MEDIA lets us know that slave leia (which tbh is a pretty shitty name) was every lil boy’s wet dream from that generation. yes, it was sexualization. that is THE POINT OF A GIRL’S SLAVE COSTUME IN STAR WARS. christ almighty
i mean just look at ahsoka, who’s quite young to begin with, and still pretty young at the end. she’s in a boob tube & a lil skirt when she’s still basically a kid, and then gets a boob window when she’s only 15. and yet the boob window seems reasonable compared to the stupid lil bikini shirt she was wearing before! i love ahsoka’s character with all my heart, but goddamn her outfits could be a lil less ~sexy~ for a child.
if you’re a crybaby fanboy who can’t handle girls (and poc & queer folk) liking star wars and wanting it to, y’know, cater to us too then you can just piss right the hell off. i’m over it being a ~no girls allowed~ club because i fuckin love it and i will fight you for it
screaming to the heavens about how much i love Saf right now omg

A commission I did for my pal a couple months back that I forgot to post! Space punk in her bug stompers. This is actually the main character from a comic I’ve been planning forever.
