Polyglot friends wanted!
Like or reblog this if you’re a polyglot/you’re studying languages and it’s okay to start a friendship with you!
How to learn a language
Tips from a language major:
•When learning new vocabulary write the meaning in your language once and the new word at least three times
•If you are learning a new writing style (I.e. Hanzi, kanji, Sanskrit, etc.) write the character at least three times, the meaning and the pronunciation once. -do not write the pronunciation above the character, write it to the side, otherwise you won’t even try to read it. -Learn! Stroke! Order!
•when reviewing vocab try to use the word in a sentence.
•do not pay attention to the technicalities of the grammar. Do not attempt to compare it to your own language. This will seriously mess you up for 80 years. Just pay attention to the sentence structure and make similar sentences.
•if you are learning a tonal language (I.e Chinese) or language that has sounds that don’t exist in your language watch videos of people pronouncing things and try to match their mouth movements.
•if all else fails on your tones just speak quickly.
•watch TV shows in that language and yes watch them with subtitles. But please be aware that may not be how people speak in real life (I’m looking at you, Japanese/Chinese/Korean learners)
•DO NOT BE AFRIAD TO MAKE MISTAKES of you mess up during a sentence just correct yourself and keep going.
•flash cards, flash cards, flash cards. Real and digital.
•spend at least an hour a day on it (OUTSIDE of class), if you’re trying to learn on your own you’re gonna need more time.
•talk to yourself in that language, take notes in it, set your phone to it. You probably look crazy but that is a-ok.
•listen to music in that language, while it probably won’t do much for your ability in the beginning it will help you distinguish sounds once you get pretty good.
•and lastly, don’t give up. It took you like ten years to grasp your own language it’s gonna take awhile to grasp another.
-How I learned 2 ½ languages at once.
Study tips to actually get shit done
And no, the first tip isn’t to ‘just start’, or to whip out your 84727 coloured pens, agenda, and colour code your life.
1. Give yourself incentive: You’re a lot more likely to actually do the work if you tell yourself you’re going to watch a movie in 3 hours, rather than having an abyss of time to finish that chapter.
2. Start early: I’m assuming most of the readers are on summer break now. I’m not asking you to start studying from the evening you finished your exam, but start at least one month before your school begins, so you can ease into the next school year. Here’s how to go about it: Get the total syllabus - You can mostly find this online, or on the school website.
Decide how much you want to cover over the summer - Don’t try to learn the entire 2-year course in 2 months. Start with around 2-3 chapters to give yourself a head-start.
Get the textbooks - Again, you can mostly find these online, or at your library. If you can’t locate them online, ask someone! There are many websites dedicated to that particular board of education, and most of the textbooks come with a CD that has the book in .pdf form, and most people would gladly send you the first couple of chapters.
Stay away from past exam papers - I say this because past exams are limited, and you want to ensure that you have enough resources to practice from before your actual exams. Practice the Excercise questions in your textbook instead. Or if you really really want to practice more, invest in a question bank.
3. Determine how you learn best: Contrary to popular belief, there aren’t only 3 kinds of learners. See for yourself:
And while we all feel we’re stress learners, that’s not quite the deal. If you have the time, try out each of these methods to find which one would suit you on the long term.
4. Don’t movie into the library: I know it must be tempting to just sit in the library all day, but 4 hours of blogging in the library is still 4 hours of blogging. Going to the library just gives you the illusion of productivity, if you don’t do anything there.
5. Ask you friends/family to help you stay focused: Tell them to confiscate your technology or turn off the wifi when you’re studying. Download whatever material you need for college work, or use a website-blocking app. (There are a zillion of those floating around.)
6. DON’T. HIGHLIGHT. Unless you abso-frikkin-lutely have to. Highlighting leads to passive reading. You start studying on autopilot, and there’s no point of having 4 pages of neon orange that you don’t remember reading.
7. Note-taking: Sure, all the studyblr pictures of notes with MacBooks and sharpies and Staedtler pens might look ‘aesthetic’ but don’t try to replicate that if it don’t work for you. If you lie to scribble down your notes on newspaper margins with a black ball pen, then by all means, do that. There really is no point having an ultra-pretty study guide that you don’t really use, or worse, don’t have time to use.
8. Cut your flashcards out of paper for short courses. I find this especially helpful for vocab, etc, because it’s just a few words that I will become familiar with quickly. Use proper flashcards for things like definitions and mnemonics, as you’ll be needing these on the long term. (Also, I’m sorry I can’t help you more with flashcards, as we don’t get those in my country. It’s like I live in Narnia, minus the cool stuff.)
9. Do all the practice problems: This one is pretty self-explanatory.
Bonus tip: If you use a bullet journal/to-do list, I recommend highlighting the tasks you have finished. this one is totally optional, but it helps me feel more accomplished at the end of the day.

memorization tips!
use mnemonics! this is what i’ve been using to learn vocabulary since day 1, it makes language learning so much more fun + easier. here is a good explanation of what mnemonics do.
use a spaced repetition system like anki which has been proven to basically be the best way to learn vocabulary for a second/third language!!
here’s a super useful introduction to different memory techniques!
make a schedule - memorizing something once won’t make it stick, you have to commit to revision
if you decide not to use anki/other spaced repetition software, set time-based targets for what you want to achieve!
+ flashcards insp if you want to make flashcards
@studyign‘s amazing alternative to flashcards method that works miracles for anything to do with memorization
study tips:
set a target of at least 5 mins a day either reviewing past content or learning something simple with some of the apps listed above!
keep a “messy tips book” to note down any interesting information you come across on your language-learning journey/any questions you want to ask + write the answers down to later!
keep a “grammar book” - add to this as you go and it will probably help you a lot later on for revision and reference!
a phrasebook MAY be a worthy investment if you are ready to commit to actively learning from the book and make sure you’re not going to buy it to just let it sit there and collect dust
stick to one course/book at a time. there is a huge temptation to start 43 different courses at once, but this distracts you from focusing on completing + mastering the content!
immerse yourself in the language by getting into that culture’s tv shows, music, etc. you’ll probably pick stuff up along the way!
motivation for when the going gets tough:
think about being able to watch tv shows in the language without subs
have secret convos with your language friends
be able to travel to that country and get around no problem
imagine being mistaken for a native speaker!!
10 benefits of learning another language
being able to say “i self-learned ____!”
learning more languages opens up a lot more career options + makes you more in demand in the workplace!
i really hope this helped you guys! wishing you all the best in your language-learning endeavours :^)

This is what I’m looking for! Thank a lot :)
A library is many things. It’s a place to go, to get in out of the rain. It’s a place to go if you want to sit and think. But particularly it is a place where books live, and where you can get in touch with other people, and other thoughts, through books. If you want to find out about something, the information is in the reference books — the dictionaries, the encyclopedias, the atlases. If you like to be told a story, the library is the place to go. Books hold most of the secrets of the world, most of the thoughts that men and women have had. And when you are reading a book, you and the author are alone together — just the two of you. A library is a good place to go when you feel unhappy, for there, in a book, you may find encouragement and comfort. A library is a good place to go when you feel bewildered or undecided, for there, in a book, you may have your question answered. Books are good company, in sad times and happy times, for books are people — people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book.

(another) Dream
These days i think about my future a lot. What really i want most in my life. Browsing many sites while ignoring my thesis. Listening music on sound-cloud and watching YouTube are so healing. But then, i find my self watching language tutorial more than ever. I don’t really know how it be attract me and gave me excitement. Then suddenly i start learning new languages which is my fourth and fifth one.
I speak Indonesia, learning English and Korean. And now i decided to start being a total dummy cause i choose Tagalog and Italian to learn. Yeah I know maybe you would say if my English and Korean are (still) not sophisticated one. But I think it doesn’t matter to take a challenge learning new languages whether my English and Korean have been in an intermediate stage.
So, yes I have (another) dream now. I wanna be a Polyglot. Sounds cool, huh? But, no! I don’t learn new languages just to look cool and impress my mom, friends, whatsoever. I do this because i realize that language is my passion. I always feel curious and excited to know new words and hear the sound of other language.
I love language which has tone and a lot of vowels in it. That’s why I like English and Korean. For the next, I will start learning Tagalog and Italian. Actually I already made a list of languages i wanna learn, so here it is;
1.Tagalog (Filipino)
2. Italian
3. Spain
4. Arabic
5. Suomi (Finnish)
6. Hebrew
7. Swahili
8. Japanese
That’s the plan, but off course i consider quality over quantity. So, I’ll learn them one by one and step by step. Wish I could reach it up. And it’s how my life appreciating languages begin.
To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.
You are most powerful, most effective, when you are completely yourself. But don’t try to be yourself. That’s another role. It’s called “natural, spontaneous me.” As soon as you are trying to be this or that, you are playing a role. “Just be yourself” is good advice, but it can also be misleading. The mind will come in and say, “Let’s see. How can I be myself?” Then, the mind will develop some kind of strategy: “How to be myself.” Another role. “How can I be myself?” is, in fact, the wrong question. It implies you have to do something to be yourself. But how doesn’t apply here because you are yourself already. Just stop adding unnecessary baggage to who you already are.
