Do you have any tips for developing an art style you’re happy with? Yours seems so effortless and pretty and I need help!
thank you! here are a few things i’ve learned over the years:
learn basics
i feel like this is something a lot of people want to skip sometimes, but i’ve found it to be incredibly beneficial for me! whether you like to draw humans, animals or you want your style to be cartoony, studying anatomy really helps. you can get books from the library, study stock photography, use youtube tutorial videos or use a site like pose maniacs to practice. if you are able to take a life drawing class I highly recommend this too. you really gain an understanding of how bodies move and work and it will help you so much in the long run.
practice styles you like
if you appreciate how an artist draws something (like eyes, hands or bodies) it’s totally fine to take bits and pieces of various styles and practice drawing them. sometimes i’ll open a blank canvas and just doodle various body parts and poses to figure out what I like and what vibes with me. eventually you will grow more comfortable and develop your own unique thing. you probably won’t realize it as it happens either, but it will.
🌸patience 🌸
i’ve been drawing since i could hold a pencil & i’m an old fart now, and it feels as if i’ve only developed a style I liked within the past few years. sometimes it takes awhile and that’s ok! everyone’s art journey is different. be kind to yourself when you’re drawing and try not to compare yourself to other artists. use them as inspiration instead.
also this is marginally related but I’ve also found that the environment you’re in can play a big role. when i’m drawing i try to make it relaxing by lighting candles, listening to music or podcasts (ie. The Adventure Zone,) making a cup of coffee or tea, etc. I do this when I’m writing too so this is probably just me being extra but it helps a ton.
