hometown theory

ok so for the ride music video, in the comments, someone said how when they were in the dark they were more comfortable, and in the light they kept squinting. near the end of the video they get sunglasses, though, and that helps them with the brightness.

the person who commented mentioned how that could possibly be a metaphor for how when no one knew about them, and they were “in the dark” they were more comfortable, but now that they have singles on the billboard charts and play larger venues and almost everyone knows of them, they have to squint because their “eyes” are used to the darkness.

in hometown, they say “where we’re from, there’s no sun, our hometown’s in the dark, where we’re from, we’re no one, our hometown’s in the dark” and this could be a correlation to how when they first started the band, they were small and only a local band, their “hometown”. they got used to playing smaller venues and being a band people had never heard of, and now they are more popular then they’ve ever been.

“we don’t know how to put back the power in our souls, we don’t know how to find what once was in our bones” many people, when they get more well-known, lose what they were when they started, they lose how honest and close they were with their fans. tyler and josh don’t want to do that, and they want to try to find how to keep what they had in the beginning.
