PLEASE this is my first like romance fanfic ive ever written..im so sorry if its complete shit cries. ₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
it was late afternoon at the hayvenhurst house. y/n was sprawled out across michael’s bed, lying flat on her stomach with her chin propped up in her hands, flipping the page of a book she’d been trying to read for the past two hours. honestly, she'd been reading the same three paragraphs over and over again.
downstairs, she could hear the muffled sound of the family—someone was playing the piano, probably randy, and she could hear katherine's soft laughter from the kitchen. katherine had already peeked her head in earlier to offer her some lemonade, totally used to y/n just hanging out in michael's space while he was away at the studio.
the two of them had been inseparable since the day the jacksons moved to encino. y/n's mom did a lot of high-end fashion design work, which meant y/n was always around creative crowds, but michael was different. she still remembered him just roaming the neighborhood streets back then, looking a little lost but so curious about everything. the second they started talking, it was like everything clicked.
and of course, y/n fell for him. come on, who wouldn't? he had this soft, magnetic energy that just pulled her in. but it was a quiet, aching kind of love, because there was a massive hurdle she could never cross.
diana ross.
the door to the bedroom suddenly swung open, and michael practically bounced inside. he was wearing a striped button-down shirt that was half-untucked, his afro perfectly rounded out, and he had his notebook clutched tight against his chest. he looked exhausted but totally wired, his eyes bright.
"y/n, oh my god, you're still here, good," he said, kicking the door shut behind him with his heel. he threw himself onto the foot of the bed, face down into the mattress, groaning happily. "quincy worked me so hard today. my throat is so sore."
y/n smiled, sitting up. "let me guess. he made you do the vocals for don't stop 'til you get enough again?"
"five times," michael mumbled into the blanket, his voice muffled. then he rolled over onto his back, staring up at the ceiling, a dreamy smile slowly spreading across his face.
he then sat up, as he started explaining the music with his hands. "we were talking about the feeling of the album. i told quincy i want it to be magical. like, when people listen to it in their cars or their rooms, they feel like they can fly. diana told me once that music should always make you feel like you're dreaming, and that's exactly what i'm trying to do."
there it was. just a quick, casual mention, but it still sent a familiar little pinch straight to y/n's heart. she then picked up her book, reading... well, fake reading. anything to keep her mouth shut.
"mother said i shouldn't get too caught up in my daydreams," michael murmured, his voice dropping to that gentle, private register he only used when it was just the two of you. he reached out, his long fingers gently tapping the side of her arm. "were you lonely today? i'm sorry i took so long at the studio."
"no, mike, i'm fine," y/n said quickly, looking up and forcing a genuine smile because she hated seeing him look worried. "i love hanging out here. and the track sounds amazing, seriously. it's going to be a huge album."
michael beamed at her, his whole face lighting up again, completely relieved by her answer. "we're a team. you're my lucky charm."
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
they went downstairs together after that to grab some food, but the quiet vibe didn't last long before they headed back up. the walk back up the stairs was quiet. michael was focused on balancing a donut in one hand and his half-empty glass of orange juice in the other, taking the steps slow so he wouldn't spill anything.
when they both got back into his room, y/n immediately went right back to her spot on the bed. she climbed up, settling onto her stomach, and pulled her book back open. but her eyes weren't really tracking the words. her chest still felt tight, her heart hammering against her ribs for no good reason.
michael kicked off his loafers and sat cross-legged at the desk in the corner. he pulled his notebook toward him, tapping the eraser of a yellow pencil against his chin, completely lost in his own thoughts for a minute.
"she just understands the vision," michael murmured out of nowhere, not even looking back at her. he was tracing a line in his notebook, his voice airy and faraway. "the way diana is under a microscope, she told me i have to protect my peace. and she’s just so beautiful, y/n. like, inside and out. she's got this elegance that i wish i could—"
"you know she's older, right?"
the words blurted out of y/n's mouth before she could stop them. they sounded incredibly sharp in the quiet room, practically hanging in the air like smoke.
michael paused. the tapping of his pencil stopped entirely. he slowly turned around in his chair, his brow furrowing as he blinked at her, genuinely confused. "huh? i mean... yeah, of course i know that. what does that have to do with anything?"
"it's just... there's no way it would ever happen, michael," she said bluntly.
she knew she was being mean. she could see the slight flinch in his eyes, but the words were just rushing out of her now, fueled by weeks and weeks of holding it all in. everything about diana always made y/n feel completely off. she hated how much power she had over him. she hated watching her play with his feelings or lead him on, acting like his best friend one day and his untouchable muse the next, while he just worshipped the ground she walked on.
michael’s entire demeanor shifted. the gentle, daydreaming boy disappeared, replaced by a defensive sharpness. his jaw tightened, and he stood up from the chair, holding his pencil tight. his voice raised just a bit, pitching higher the way it did when he got genuinely distressed.
"why are you saying that?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly with hurt. "why are you being so unkind about her today? she hasn't done anything to you, y/n."
"i'm not trying to be unkind, i'm being realistic!" she exclaimed, sitting up on the bed and abandoning the book completely. "you're sitting here pining over someone who looks at you like a younger brother, mike. it’s... it's just hard to watch. she’s leading you on, and you’re too blind to see it because you're so obsessed with her."
"i am not blind!" michael's voice cracked, and he took a step toward the bed. his big eyes were wide and flashing with real upset now, his cheeks flushing. he hated being called blind, and he hated when people treated him like he didn't understand the real world. "you don't know anything about our relationship. you don't know what she says to me when we're alone. she cares about me. she really cares about me."
"i care about you! she cares about your career, michael! she likes being the person you run to!" y/n said back, her own voice shaking because her heart was beating so hard it felt like it was going to burst right out of her chest. "she likes the attention, and you're letting her take advantage of how sweet you are."
"stop it, just—stop it," michael snapped, his voice dropping into a tense, breathless whisper that felt even heavier than a shout. he stared at her, his eyes welling up with sudden, angry tears. "you're just being jealous and mean. you're just trying to ruin the one thing that makes me feel inspired right now. you don't understand what it's like for me, y/n. you don't know what it feels like to have everyone wanting a piece of you, and she's the only one who doesn't. you're supposed to be my best friend, but you're just acting like everyone else outside that gate."
the words hit her like a physical punch.
y/n just froze. the heat in her face instantly drained away, leaving her completely cold. she stared at him, her breath hitching in her throat, her mouth slightly open but absolutely nothing coming out. comparing her to the greedy people outside his gates was the worst thing he could have possibly said to her.
michael stayed frozen too, breathing heavily through his nose, his shoulders tense. but almost immediately, the anger in his eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, horrible look of regret. he looked down at his own hands, then back up at her pale face, realizing exactly how deeply his words had cut her. he hadn't meant it—he'd just reacted out of pure, stung pride—but the room was completely dead silent now.
y/n swallowed hard, trying to keep her chin from trembling.
"alright," she said quietly. it was barely a whisper, but in the sudden, heavy silence of his bedroom, it sounded incredibly loud.
she let out a shaky, heavy breath, looking anywhere but at him. "if that’s how you really feel... then i’ll get out of your way. and join the people at the gates" she spat.
she quickly scrambled off the bed, her knees a little weak, and grabbed her book and her bag. her fingers were shaking so bad she could barely loop the strap over her shoulder.
michael didn't move. he just stood there by his desk, his eyes glued to the floor, staring hard at his bare feet against the carpet. his arms were crossed tightly over his chest, his shoulders hunched inward. he looked so small like that, completely shut down. he didn't say a single word to stop her. y/n knew him well enough to know that michael really wasn't the type to easily admit when he was in the wrong—especially not when his pride was stung. when he got like this, he just closed off like a lock.
she walked over to the door, the soles of her shoes squeaking softly on the floor. she reached out and wrapped her fingers around the cool brass door handle, but she stopped. she couldn't help it.
she turned her head slightly, looking back over her shoulder one last time, hoping—just praying—that he would look up and tell her to stay.
but he didn't. instead, michael slowly sank back down into his desk chair. he didn't look at her. he just picked up his yellow pencil, pulled his notebook closer, and turned his back to her, pretending to go right back to writing his lyrics. his shoulders were still incredibly tense, but he was choosing the music over her.
hot, burning tears welled up in y/n's eyes instantly. she blinked them back furiously, absolutely refusing to let them fall in his room. she wasn't going to let him see her cry over this.
she let out a small, wet sniffle, turned the handle, and slipped out into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind her with a quiet, devastating click.
y/n practically bolted down the stairs, her feet moving as fast as they could without actually running. she kept her head down, blinking rapidly to force the remaining heat out of her eyes. all she wanted was to get through the front door, walk down the driveway, and get back to the safety of her own bedroom before she completely fell apart.
but just as she reached the bottom step and went to hurry past the entryway, katherine popped up from around the corner, holding a stack of freshly folded towels.
"hey sweetheart, leaving so soon?" katherine asked, her voice incredibly sweet and gentle, completely cutting through the heavy thumping of y/n's heart.
y/n froze, her stomach dropping into a tight knot. she quickly took a sharp breath, pasting on a fake smile as she turned around to face her.
"yeah... my mom needs me home for something," y/n lied, her voice sounding a little tighter than usual, though she tried her best to make it sound casual. she adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder, taking a tiny half-step toward the door to show she was in a rush. "thanks for letting me stay again, mrs. jackson."
katherine paused, her warm eyes narrowing just a fraction as she looked at y/n's face. she didn't say anything right away, but she set the towels down on the small table by the hallway. katherine had raised enough children to know exactly what a kid looked like when they were trying to hide a heavy heart.
"are you sure everything is alright, honey?" katherine asked softly, stepping a little closer and reaching out to gently touch y/n's forearm. her hand was so warm, it almost made y/n want to let go of the lie right then and there. "michael didn't say something silly to upset you, did he? you know how he gets when he’s working on his music... he gets so deep in his own head."
y/n’s throat felt tight again, the lie tasting like ash in her mouth. she couldn't bring herself to get michael in trouble, even if he had just broken her heart.
"no, no, it's nothing like that, mrs. jackson, really," y/n said kindly, offering another small, reassuring nod. "we just... he needs to focus on his lyrics today, and i don't want to get in his way. i really should get home before my mom gets worried."
katherine looked at her for another long moment, clearly not entirely convinced, but she was too polite to push when y/n was clearly struggling to hold it together. she let out a soft, sympathetic sigh and patted y/n’s arm one last time.
"alright, sweetheart. you tell your mother i said hello," katherine murmured, giving her a small, comforting smile. "and you come back whenever you like, okay? you're always welcome here. don't you forget that."
"i won't. thank you," y/n whispered.
she gave katherine one last tight smile, turned around, and finally pushed the heavy front door open. the cool evening air hit her face instantly, a sharp contrast to the suffocating warmth of the house, and she hurried down the steps before the first tear could finally slip down her cheek. ₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
the silent treatment lasted for an entire week. seven days of absolute, deafening quiet between them.
for michael, it was his pride that kept his hand away from the telephone. every time he passed the phone in the hallway, he’d stare at it, his fingers twitching, but then he’d remember the argument and shut down all over again. he just couldn't bring himself to face being in the wrong. and for y/n, she was just tired. she had spent years putting his feelings first, and this time, she was holding her ground. if he wanted her back in his life, he was going to have to be the one to make the first move.
by the seventh day, michael couldn't take it anymore. the house felt empty, his studio sessions were completely flat, and he was miserable. he finally cracked. he goes to bill, and quietly asked him to pull the car around to drive him down the street to y/n’s house. it was now nightfall.
when the car pulled up against the curb, michael took a deep breath, adjusting his dark sunglasses before stepping out. he walked up the familiar porch steps, his heart doing a nervous little flutter against his ribs, and knocked softly on the wood.
after a few seconds, the door swung open, and y/n’s mother stood there.
"michael!" she beamed, her face lighting up with genuine surprise as she wiped her hands on a checkered tea towel. "oh, it’s been a while! how is the album coming along?"
michael forced a polite, sweet smile, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "hey, miss l/n. it’s going really well, actually. quincy is really happy with the tracks." he paused, his voice dropping into that soft, tentative whisper. "uhm... is y/n here, by any chance?"
m/n’s smile faded a bit, her brow furrowing in a slight frown. "oh. sorry, honey, no. she left just a little bit ago."
michael’s shoulders slumped, his face dropping. "oh. do you know where she went? maybe the library, or the corner store?"
m/n shook her head, folding the tea towel over her arm. "no, i'm pretty sure she actually went out to the diner with caleb."
michael froze. his entire face dropped.
caleb?
the name tasted completely foreign and sour in his head. who on earth was caleb?
"uhm... caleb?" he asked, trying to keep his voice completely casual, but there was a sharp, strained pitch to his tone that he couldn't quite mask.
m/n just smiled and nodded, completely oblivious to the sudden tension radiating off him. "yeah! a friend of hers from a while back. he came by to pick her up, and they went over to the diner together to grab some food."
"did you want me to tell her you dropped by?" m/n asked sweetly, adjusting the towel on her arm.
michael quickly shook his head, his curls bouncing slightly with the movement. "no, it's okay. thanks, miss l/n." he forced one last polite, small smile before turning on his heel and walking back down the porch steps.
bill was already holding the back door of the car open for him, giving him a quiet, sympathetic look. he had seen the way michael’s shoulders had dropped during the brief conversation. michael slid into the plush backseat, staring blankly ahead as bill climbed into the driver's seat and looked back over his shoulder.
"home, mike?" bill asked softly.
michael hesitated, his fingers tapping the car door. his chest was tight, a million thoughts racing through his head. he couldn't just go back to that quiet bedroom and wonder. he shook his head.
"the diner," he murmured, his voice barely audible. "go to the diner, bill."
bill didn't ask any questions. he just put the car in drive and pulled away from the curb. ₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
the car pulled up across the street from the local diner. the bright neon sign buzzed overhead, casting a pink and blue glow over the pavement. michael leaned closer to the tinted glass of the window, his breath slightly fogging the surface as his eyes scanned the interior through the big glass windows.
it didn't take him long to find her.
y/n was sitting in a booth right near the front. she was wearing a beautiful blue sundress that he had never seen before, her hair done up half-up, half-down, and her little earrings swayed gently every time she moved her head. she looked absolutely stunning. but michael’s jaw instantly clenched the second his eyes moved across the table to the guy sitting opposite her.
caleb.
he was... incredibly basic looking, to be completely honest. he was just wearing a plain t-shirt and jeans, with messy hair and an average smile. michael let out a bitter, quiet scoff under his breath, crossing his arms tightly over his chest.
"can you believe this, bill? him? seriously?" michael muttered, his tone uncharacteristically sharp and biting. "he looks like any other regular guy. there's nothing special about him at all."
bill just stayed silent in the front seat, keeping his eyes in front of him, knowing better than to fuel the fire when michael got into one of his rare, stubborn moods.
michael kept watching, unable to tear his eyes away even though it was hurting him. he saw how genuinely happy y/n looked. she was leaning forward, listening intently, and then she threw her head back and laughed. her eyes squinted up the exact way they always did when she was truly happy—the way they used to when they were hanging out on his bed talking about silly things.
then, caleb smiled and leaned across the table. his hand reached out, his fingers carefully catching a loose strand of hair that had fallen across y/n's face, gently tucking it behind her ear. y/n’s cheeks flushed a soft pink, and she looked down at the table, a shy, sweet smile spreading across her lips.
michael’s chest tightened so hard he actually gasped for air, his hand rubbing the fabric of his pants as he rubbed them on his knee. he had never felt a burning, suffocating panic quite like this before.
and suddenly, right there in the dark backseat of the car, the fog in his brain completely cleared.
it hit him like a physical blow to the chest. the burning, agonizing pain in his stomach wasn't just simple jealousy, and it didn't feel anything like the distant, safe admiration he had for diana. diana was a fantasy. but this—watching y/n smile at someone else, watching another man touch her face—felt like his entire life was being erased right in front of him. he didn't just miss his best friend. he was in love with her. he had been in love with her all along, hidden behind his safe daydreams because he was too terrified to admit how much power she held over his heart.
that should be me, michael thought, a fierce, protective certainty blooming right over the panic. i'm the one who's supposed to make her laugh like that.
michael let out a shaky, frustrated sigh, his chest heaving as he stared at caleb's hand near her face. he couldn't just sit in the back of a dark car and watch this happen anymore. he reached down and unbuckled his seatbelt with a loud, sharp click.
"i'll be back," he muttered.
before bill could even open his mouth to warn him or tell him it was a bad idea, michael was already pushing the car door open. he adjusted his sunglasses, and checked his shirt as he strode across the asphalt of the street. his heart was pounding a mile a minute, a mix of pure nerves and stubborn determination driving him forward. ₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
the little bell above the diner door jingled loudly as he pushed it open. the smell of grease and sweet milkshakes hit him, but his eyes were locked entirely on the front booth.
he didn't hesitate. he walked right up to their table and, without asking for permission, slid right into the booth directly next to y/n. he did it smoothly, his left arm casually stretching out along the top of the seat behind her shoulders, almost completely surrounding her space.
"hey guys," he simply said. his voice was soft, cool, and completely casual, like he hadn't just spent the last week ignoring her.
y/n’s head whipped around so fast her earrings rattled. she stared at him, her lips parted in total shock, her eyes wide as she took in his face. "michael?!" she exclaimed, her voice pitching up in pure surprise.
across the table, caleb just froze with his straw halfway to his mouth. he looked back and forth between the two of them, completely blindsidedby the celebrity suddenly crowding into their booth. "uhh..." caleb trailed off awkwardly, his face going a little red.
michael just smiled, tilting his chin up. he didn't take his sunglasses off, using the dark lenses to hide the fierce look he had in his eyes as he stared at caleb. instead, he immediately started being incredibly petty, his voice dropping into that sweet, overly innocent tone he used when he was trying to get under someone's skin.
"so, what are we eating?" michael asked, leaning in a little closer to y/n, completely ignoring caleb’s existence now. he peered down at her plate. "crinkle-cut fries? you know those aren't good for you, y/n. you usually prefer the home-fries at the cafe down the road. remember? the ones we always get after the studio?"
y/n’s shock instantly melted into pure irritation. the nerve of this guy to show up after seven days of silence just to ruin her night.
"michael," y/n snapped, her voice low and warning as she nudged her elbow back against his ribs to get him to move away.
but michael didn't budge. he just gave a little airy, high-pitched chuckle, tapping his long fingers against the vinyl of the seat right behind her head. "i'm just saying! and who is your friend here? you never told me you had friends who liked greasy diner food. caleb, right? that's a nice shirt, caleb. did you get it on sale? it looks very... comfortable."
caleb looked down at his own shirt, his face turning an even brighter shade of red under michael’s dark sunglasses. he awkwardly tugged at the collar, clearing his throat. "uhh, yeah, actually... it was on sale at the department store downtown. it's just cotton."
michael just hummed, a short, airy sound that didn't sound convinced at all. his eyes remained fixed entirely on the profile of caleb's face, his thumb lazily tracing a small circle on the vinyl seat right behind y/n's neck.
y/n’s jaw tightened, the sheer embarrassment of the situation making her blood boil. she turned her head completely, glaring right into michael's lenses from only a few inches away.
"michael, you need to leave," y/n snapped, her voice dropping into a harsh, fierce whisper so the families at the nearby tables wouldn't start staring at them. "right now. go back to your car."
michael didn't move an inch. he just tilted his head, his lower lip pouting out just a tiny bit in that stubborn, innocent way he got whenever katherine told him he couldn't do something. "why? i'm hungry, y/n. i just wanted to see my best friend. i haven't seen you all week."
"gee, i wonder why," she muttered bitterly, crossing her arms tightly over her chest and leaning forward to put some distance between her back and his hovering arm.
across the table, caleb shifted uncomfortably in his seat. he looked at y/n, then looked at michael, trying to summon whatever courage he had left.
"yeah, i mean... i'm sorry, man," caleb said, his voice trailing off awkwardly as he tried to find the right words. "but we're... we're kind of on a date right now. we were just trying to have a nice dinner."
the word date seemed to echo in the cramped space of the booth.
michael’s entire demeanor went completely still. the petty, playful smirk instantly vanished from his lips, his jaw setting into a hard, rigid line. the reality of it hit him like ice water. this wasn't just some old school friend y/n was catching up with over fries. this guy was trying to take her out. he was trying to be the person who took her home, who held her hand, who looked at her the way michael secretly wished he had the guts to.
"a date," michael repeated, his voice dropping into a quiet, breathless register that felt suddenly dangerous. he finally took off his sunglasses, folding them with one hand and dropping them onto the table. his large, dark eyes locked onto caleb, flashing with a raw, intense protectiveness that he couldn't hide anymore. "i see."
the silence that followed was completely suffocating. caleb looked at y/n, his eyes wide and completely lost, then he looked over at michael, and then back at her, waiting for someone to explain what was happening.
y/n just brought her hand up, rubbing her forehead in pure, burning embarrassment. she couldn't even look up. her cheeks were flaming, and she wished the checkered floor would just open up and swallow her whole.
michael, on the other hand, didn't look bothered at all. now that his sunglasses were on the table, he just sat there with a little, satisfied smile on his face, casually looking around the diner like he was just admiring the wallpaper. he tapped his fingers rhythmically against the vinyl seat, completely relaxed now that he’d successfully ruined the mood.
caleb smiled awkwardly, shifting his weight from side to side before finally reaching his breaking point. "yeah... i think i'm just gonna... go."
he stood up from the booth, his legs looking a little shaky. he reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet, placing a crumpled twenty-dollar bill on the table right next to michael’s sunglasses. "uhm, see you around, y/n."
he didn't even wait for her to answer. he just turned on his heel and practically sprinted toward the door, the little bell jingling frantically behind him as he burst out into the night air.
michael hummed, his eyes tracking the guy through the big glass window until he disappeared down the sidewalk. "well. that was quick," he said, turning his head back to look at y/n, his tone completely innocent, like he hadn't just orchestrated the whole thing.
y/n glared at him, her eyes flashing with pure fury. she let out a loud, disgusted scoff.
"goodbye, michael," she said, her voice shaking with rage.
before he could even react, she slid across the seat, pushing right past him, her elbow digging into his chest as she forced her way out of the booth. she bolted for the door, storming out into the cool evening air.
michael’s eyes went wide, his smile instantly vanishing. "y/n, wait—!"
he scrambled out of the booth after her, grabbing his sunglasses. he pushed open the diner door, the bell clattering wildly, and looked down the street. her blue dress fluttering as she walked faster and faster down the sidewalk, her heels clicking sharply against the concrete.
"y/n, please! stop walking!" michael called out, his voice pitching high and strained as he started into a jog to catch up with her.
"you have some nerve, michael!" she snapped over her shoulder, not slowing down for a single second. she pumped her arms, her chest heaving with every breath. "what is wrong with you?! you don't talk to me for a whole week, and then you just show up acting as if nothing happened and completely ruin my date!"
"it wasn't a good date anyway!" michael called back, finally catching up to her side, his long strides easily matching her fast pace. he was breathing a little heavy, his hand reaching out tentatively toward her arm but not quite touching her yet. "he was boring, y/n! he didn't even know what kind of fries you liked!"
"that is not the point!" she yelled, finally spinning around on her heel to face him, forcing him to skid to a halt right in front of her under the dim glow of a streetlamp. "the point is that you don't get to just disappear and then come back and control my life! you don't own me, michael!"
michael stopped, his arms dropping to his sides. the petty, stubborn look on his face completely melted away, leaving him looking incredibly raw and vulnerable.
"why are you here?" she snapped. her voice was tight, trembling just a little bit as she stared him down under the dim orange glow of the streetlamp. "seriously, michael. why did you come?"
michael froze, the sudden sharpness of her question catching in his throat. he slowly reached up, his long fingers wrapping around the back of his neck, rubbing the skin there nervously. he looked down at the concrete between his loafers, his shoulders hunching inward until he looked so small.
"i... i don't know," he murmured, his voice dropping into that soft, breathless whisper. "i mean, i do know. i just... i couldn't take the quiet anymore, y/n. the whole house has been so quiet all week."
"so you decided to come mark your territory?" she asked bitterly, her jaw clenching. "you wouldn't even look at me when i left your room last week. you just went right back to your notebook. and now you follow me to a diner just to make a fool out of me in front of someone else?"
"no! no, it wasn't like that, i swear," michael said quickly, his head snapping up. his large, dark eyes were wide and shiny with sudden distress, pleading with her to believe him. he took a tiny, tentative step closer, his hands reaching out in front of him. "your mom told me you went out with him, and my stomach just... it went completely cold, y/n. i didn't even think. i just told bill to drive here because the thought of you sitting in there with some stranger... it made me feel sick."
"he wasn't a stranger, michael, he was my date," she said, emphasizing the word. "something normal people do when they're trying to move on."
"but i don't want you to move on!" michael raised his voice just a fraction, a raw, strained pitch breaking through his usual gentle tone. he looked at her, his bottom lip trembling a little bit as the honesty finally tore out of him, past all his stubborn pride. "i don't want you going to dinners with regular guys, and i don't want anyone else tucking your hair behind your ear. that's... that's supposed to be my job. you're my person, y/n. you've always been my person."
"you're selfish, i don't belong to you michael," she snapped, the words cutting right through the quiet space between them. her voice was thick with all the hurt she’d been carrying around. "maybe go to diana. she'll take you without missing a beat."
she didn't even wait to see the look on his face. she just turned right back around and started walking again.
michael stood frozen under the streetlight for a split second, the mention of diana’s name hitting him like a splash of freezing water. it just made his face fall into an expression of pure, panicked regret. he immediately hurried after her, his long strides frantic as his loafers scuffed against the concrete.
"y/n, wait! please, just listen to me for one second!" he called out, his voice pitching high and thin, sounding completely desperate. he caught up to her side, but she kept her gaze locked dead ahead. "that’s not fair. why are you bringing her up right now? this doesn't have anything to do with diana."
"it has everything to do with her, michael!" she said, her voice cracking as she finally slowed down just enough to glare at him while they walked. "you spend months talking about how perfect she is, how she's your muse, how she's the only one who understands you. you treat me like i'm just... just some permanent fixture in your room that will always be there waiting for you. and then the second i try to go out and have a normal life with someone else, you show up and ruin it because your pride can't handle it?"
"it’s not my pride!" michael protested, his voice straining as he reached out, his long fingers gently but firmly catching the fabric of her sleeve to force her to stop.
she yanked her arm back, but she did stop, turning to face him.
michael looked at her, his eyes completely glassy and wet with sudden tears. "i'm sorry," he whispered, the words coming out in a breathless, shaky rush. "i'm so sorry, y/n. i know i said horrible things last week. i didn't mean it when i said you were like the people outside the gate. i was just... you were saying things that scared me, and i got defensive. but this week has been awful. i couldn't even sing at the studio because every time i looked across the room, you weren't sitting on the couch with your book. it felt empty. and when your mother said you were with caleb... it didn't have anything to do with diana. it didn't feel like how i feel about her at all. it felt worse. it felt like... like someone was trying to take away my whole world."
y/n looked right into his large, dark eyes, her own vision blurring completely. "i need you to be honest with me, michael," she said, her voice cracking in a raw, painful way that made him flinch. she let out a small, shaky sniffle, wrapping her arms tighter around herself. "i can't... i can't keep loving someone if they don't love me back."
right as the confession left her lips, a cool drop of water hit her cheek. then another. within seconds, a soft, quiet rain started to patter down on the pavement around them, dark spots spreading across her blue dress and dampening the curls around michael’s face. but neither of them moved.
michael just stared at her, completely paralyzed. his mouth parted slightly, his breath hitching in his throat as the absolute weight of what she had just said sank into his chest. michael stepped closer, ignoring the rain entirely as it started to stick his striped shirt to his shoulders. he reached out, his long, slender fingers trembling slightly as he took her hands, pulling them away from her chest so he could hold them tight in his own.
"y/n..." he whispered, his voice cracking. "how can you say that? how can you think i don't love you?"
"because you don't look at me the way you look at her, michael!" she cried out softly. "you treat me like a safety net!"
"no, no, that's not it at all," michael said quickly, shaking his head frantically. he squeezed her hands tighter, stepping so close that she could feel the heat radiating off him in the cool rain. "you don't understand, y/n. diana... diana is like a dream. she’s like a painting in a museum that i look at when i want to feel inspired. but you... you're real. you're the ground under my feet. i don't talk about you to everyone because i don't want the world to touch this. i don't want the cameras to see you. i thought... i thought you knew that. i thought you knew you were the only thing keeping me sane."
he swallowed hard, his chest heaving under his damp red shirt. he leaned his forehead forward, almost touching hers, his voice dropping into a desperate, intense whisper.
"i do love you," he murmured. "i love you so much it scares me, y/n. that's why i almost lost my mind seeing you in that diner i want you. i've always wanted you."
y/n sniffled, her chest heaving as another wave of cold rain swept down the dark street. "how can i believe you?" she asked, her voice cracking so badly that the words were barely a whisper against the storm. "how... how do i know that that is true, michael? how do i know it's not just some lie you're telling me right now so you can just take me back?"
she tried to pull her hands away, but michael wouldn't let go.
"it's not a lie, y/n, i swear to you on my life it's not," michael pleaded, his voice pitching high and strained with pure earnestness. "i don't want things to go back to how they were. i don't want to hide how i feel anymore. i was just... i was so stupid and scared."
"scared of what, michael?!" she cried out softly.
"scared of how much you matter to me," he confessed, his voice dropping into a breathless whisper. he let go of one of her hands and reached up, his long, warm fingers carefully cupping the side of her wet face. "with everyone else... there's a game to play. there's a show. but with you, it's just me. just michael. and if i lose you, y/n, i don't have anything real left. i thought if i kept you as my best friend, i could keep you safe from all the craziness. but seeing you with that guy tonight... it felt like my heart was being ripped right out of my chest. i can't watch you love someone else. please don't make me do that."
he leaned his forehead down, resting it gently against hers, his warm breath fanning across her face in the chilly night air.
"i'll prove it to you," he whispered against her skin. "every single day. i'll show you. just... please don't alone."
the only sound for a long moment was the soft, steady patter of the rain hitting the concrete. y/n stayed completely quiet, and she closed her eyes. her forehead was still resting against his, her breath coming in shallow, shaky puffs. she took a deep, shuddering breath, the cool rain soothing the hot flush on her cheeks. she slowly opened her eyes, looking into his, from only inches away.
"okay..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rain, but it made michael’s whole body instantly freeze. she let out a small, wet sniffle, her eyes searching his face. "show me."
michael didn't even waste a second to answer with words.
before she could even process the relief washing over his face, he leaned the rest of the way in. his long fingers, still cupping the side of her wet cheek, slid gently into her damp hair, and he kissed her.
it wasn't a sudden or aggressive kiss; it was sweet, incredibly soft, and hesitant at first, completely matching his gentle nature. his lips were warm against hers, a sharp and perfect contrast to the freezing rain dripping down their faces. it felt like a quiet confession he’d been holding back for years, pouring all the words he couldn't find into the touch.
y/n’s heart did a violent, dizzying flip in her chest. her hands, which had been resting tensely against his chest, instantly relaxed. she let her eyelids flutter shut, her fingers gripping the damp fabric of his shirt to pull him even closer.
as she melted into him, michael let out a tiny, shaky breath against her lips, his other arm wrapping securely around her waist to pull her flush against him. the kiss deepened just a fraction, becoming more certain, warmer, completely erasing the ghost of diana, the fight in his bedroom, and the week of agonizing silence between them.
when he finally pulled back, just an inch or two, he didn't let go of her. his forehead came right back to rest against hers, both of them breathing heavily in the cool night air. michael’s large, dark eyes were wide and absolutely shining as he looked down at her, a massive, breathless smile slowly spreading across his face. his cheeks were flushed a deep, beautiful color.
"i'm sorry," he whispered, leaning his forehead against hers again. "i'm so sorry."
he closed his eyes and kissed her again softly. the kiss was sweet and short, and when he pulled away, he looked at her with almost puppy-dog eyes. "forgive me?" he asks.
y/n thinks for a second, a playful smile finally breaking across her face. "i guess... next time though? i'm destroying your studio."
she smiled before turning around and walking toward bill and the car. michael chuckled nervously, his eyes widening. "you wouldn't..." he stopped himself, his voice pitching high with that classic, frantic worry. "right?" he said nervously, hurrying to follow right behind her.
BIRTHDAY
summery; its y/n 5th birthday! michael x daughter!reader ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
the year was 1993, and it was officially y/ns fifth birthday.
she had been counting down the days for weeks, mostly because she couldn't stop thinking about the massive cake her dad promised.
it was early in the morning, and the sun was just starting to peek through the heavy curtains. michael stood by her bedroom door, completely dressed in his pajamas, just watching her sleep with a soft smile. she was curled up into a little ball, tightly hugging her favorite stuffed bunny. he quietly crept kneeling down beside her head. he reached out and gently shook her shoulder.
"baby, it's time to wake up," he whispered, his voice incredibly soft in the quiet room.
y/n stirred a little, squeezing her eyes shut before slowly blinking them open. "daddy?" she mumbled, rubbing one of her eyes with the back of her hand.
"hey you," he said, his smile widening as he smoothed a stray piece of hair out of her face.
"is it the special day?" y/n asked, her voice still laced with sleep as she sat up a little bit.
he let out a soft chuckle and nodded, his eyes bright. "yes, applehead, it's the special day. it's your birthday... you're officially five years old today." he held up his hand, spreading all five of his fingers out right in front of her. "can you believe it? five! we're going to have the best day ever. we're all going to sing happy birthday, eat so much cake, and smash a huge piñata outside. are you excited?"
y/ns eyes completely lit up, all the tiredness vanishing instantly. she nodded her head rapidly. "yeah! is the cake ready?"
he laughed, shaking his head at how obsessed she was with the dessert. "well, say no more, princess. let's go downstairs and get some breakfast in that tummy first. and since you're the birthday girl, you get to choose absolutely anything you want to eat." he leaned down and scooped her up into his arms, lifting her effortlessly.
y/n rested her head on his shoulder, throwing her small arms around his neck. "candy!" she exclaimed happily.
michael chuckled, booping her nose as he started walking out of her bedroom and toward the grand staircase. "nice try, joke's on you. candy is definitely for later, after you have some real food. what else do you want? think big."
she paused for a second, tapping her chin thoughtfully before grinning. "pancakes... with the extra syrup and chocolate chips?"
"pancakes it is," michael smiled, kissing the side of her head. "let's go see if the chef can make the biggest stack in the world for you."
"is everyone else coming?" she asked, kicking her feet back and forth as they walked through the massive hallways of neverland. she was thinking about all her uncles and aunts.
michael nodded, adjusting her slightly in his arms. "of course they are. and your cousins too! they're all coming just for you, baby. nobody would miss your big day."
y/n smiled brightly, her face lighting up at the thought of the whole family filling up the house. "yay! i get to see uncle marlon again! is he gonna do the funny dances for me?"
"oh, you know he will," michael laughed, finally stepping into the bright, spacious kitchen. he carefully set her down into one of the big kitchen chairs, making sure she was settled in safely.
he walked over to the counter and started pulling out the mixing bowls and pancake ingredients himself, wanting to make this birthday breakfast extra special instead of just leaving it to the chefs. he glanced back at her over his shoulder with a playful grin.
"yes, and aunty janet is coming too, and all the others," he said, walking back over for a second just to boop her nose with a flour-dusted finger. "you're gonna be completely spoiled today, princess. you ready to help me mix the batter?"
⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
around 12pm, the quietness of neverland completely disappeared as the front doors opened and a massive wave of noise hit the house. everyone had finally turned up.
"where's the birthday girl?!" marlon's voice echoed loudly through the foyer the second he stepped inside, drowning out everyone else.
y/ns face lit up with a massive smile, and she didn't even hesitate before running straight toward the sound of his voice. "uncle marlon!!"
"there she is!" he exclaimed, dropping his bags and instantly scooping her up into the air, spinning her around a little bit before pressing a big kiss to the side of her head. "oh my goodness, look at you! you've gotten so big since the last time i saw you! are you sure you're only turning five? you feel like you're twelve already!"
right behind him, the rest of the chaotic jackson crew started filing into the house. jermaine, tito, randy, and jackie appeared one by one, hugging michael and laughing, closely followed by janet and latoya, and a whole stampede of her cousins who were already eyeing the arcade games in the distance.
"there she is! look at my favorite little lady," janet cooed, rushing past her brothers to get to y/n. her face was glowing with a huge smile as she reached out her arms. "happy birthday, beautiful girl!"
y/n smiled so hard her cheeks ached, soaking up all the attention.
"hey, move out of the way and leave some room for the rest of us, will you?" jermaine snapped playfully at marlon, nudging his shoulder to get him to pass y/n over. marlon rolled his eyes but handed her off. jermaine caught her safely against his hip and gently pinched her chubby cheeks, his expression softening completely. "you excited for today, princess? you ready for a big party?"
y/n nodded eagerly, her little hands gripping his jacket. "yeah! for cake! and the piñata! daddy said it's huge."
"oh, it's definitely huge," michael laughed, walking up to join the group and crossing his arms as he watched his family crowd around his daughter. "just wait until you see what we put inside it." ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
the afternoon went by in an absolute blur for little y/n. between visiting the elephants and monkeys at the zoo, playing endless games in the arcade, and riding the carousel until her head spun, she was having the absolute best time.
but finally, it was time for the piñata.
everyone gathered out on the lawn, the big colorful donkey hanging from a thick rope on a tree branch. tito and jackie were in charge of pulling the rope to make it go up and down. michael knelt down in front of y/n, tying a silk blindfold gently around her eyes and making sure it wasn't too tight.
"can you see anything, applehead?" he whispered playfully, testing her.
y/n shook her head, laughing as she poked around in the dark. "nope! everything is black!"
"perfect," michael giggled. he took her by the shoulders and carefully spun her around three times in a circle to get her slightly dizzy. "okay, baby, get it! it's right in front of you!"
he pressed a lightweight wooden bat into her small hands, guiding her grip so she wouldn't drop it.
y/n took a deep breath, raised the bat, and swung with all her might. she completely missed the first time, the momentum spinning her around a little extra.
marlon let out his ridiculous, booming laugh from the sidelines, slapping his knee. "man, she's swinging at the air! watch out, michael, she's gonna get you instead!"
"i'm trying!" y/n giggled, adjusting her stance and swinging a second time. crack! she managed to clip the very bottom of the piñata, making it swing wildly back and forth.
the whole family erupted into cheers. michael let out that iconic, incredibly high-pitched laugh of his, clapping his hands together over and over as he hopped on his toes. "yay! you got it, baby! one more time! hit it hard!"
encouraged by her dad's cheering, y/n swung a third time, but jackie yanked the rope a little too fast, and the bat just cut through the air again. she pouted under the blindfold, but she was laughing too hard to care.
all the younger cousins took their turns after that, lining up and swinging with everything they had, but the stubborn cardboard donkey just wouldn't open.
"man, y'all are weak! let a real man show you how it's done," marlon called out from the back, shaking his head. he marched right up to the front and snatched the wooden bat right out of michael's hands. "give me that. kids, watch and learn. this is how a pro does it." he smirked, flexing his arm muscles playfully.
michael sighed, rolling his eyes with a huge grin. "marlon-"
"yeah! go uncle marlon! smash it!" y/n cheered, completely blindfold-free now and bouncing up and down on her toes.
marlon did a dramatic baseball warm-up routine, shaking his hips and pointing the bat toward the sky. he took a massive swing, but right at that exact second, jermaine gave the piñata rope a violent yank, sending the donkey flying way up into the air. marlon's bat sliced through nothing but wind, the force of the swing nearly spinning him off his feet.
"hey!" marlon yelled, glaring over at his brother.
jermaine completely lost it, throwing his head back and laughing. "you said you were a pro, man! what happened?"
marlon muttered something under his breath, locked his eyes on the target, and swung a second time. CRACK. the bat connected perfectly with the middle of the donkey, shattering it instantly.
a massive waterfall of chocolates, wrappers, and plastic toys exploded all over the green grass.
"go, y/n! go get it!" michael yelled over the chaos, that high-pitched laugh bubbling up again as he gently pushed her forward into the fray.
y/n didn't need to be told twice. she bolted and literally dived onto the grass, her small hands scrambling to grab everything within arm's reach. all the other cousins dived right next to her, a sea of arms and legs tangling together in the scramble.
"mine, mine, mine, that's mine too," marlon said literally on his knees on the grass, shamelessly shoving a bunch of starbursts and mini snickers bars into his jacket pockets alongside the kids.
within a single minute, the lawn was completely picked clean. every single piece of candy was gone, and everyone was sitting back on their heels, breathless and checking their hauls.
marlon stood up, dusting off his jeans and proudly holding up a massive, overflowing pile of sweets in his arms. he looked down at all the kids, stuck his tongue out, and let out a loud, mocking laugh. "ahah! i got way more than all of you combined! older and wiser, babies!"
y/n looked at his huge pile, then looked down at her own smaller pile, and narrowed her eyes. before marlon could even react, she lunged forward and smacked the bottom of his hands with a loud slap!
the sudden impact caught him completely off guard. his hands flew open, and his entire prize haul went flying through the air, raining back down onto the grass. y/n instantly dropped to the floor, using both her arms like a bulldozer to scoop all of his dropped candy straight into her own lap.
"oh, come on! that is cheating!" marlon exclaimed, throwing his hands up in disbelief while the rest of the family—especially michael—absolutely erupted into hysterical laughter. ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
after the intense piñata session, it was finally time for the moment y/n had been waiting for all day.
cake time.
everyone packed into the massive neverland kitchen, the room going completely dark as someone shut the blinds and flipped off the lights. the only illumination came from the glowing, flickering candles approaching from the hallway. michael walked in slowly, carrying a huge cake in y/f/c flavour—her absolute favorite.
y/ns face lit up in the candlelight, and she started clapping her hands together rapidly in her chair. marlon had pulled up a seat right to her left, leaning down so he was right at her height, whispering, "get ready to blow, birthday girl."
"happy birthday to you," everyone started singing in perfect, booming harmony, their voices echoing off the kitchen walls.
michael carefully placed the cake down right in front of her, the glowing candles casting a warm light over both of them.
"happy birthday to you," they all sang louder. michael leaned down right next to her head, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her temple as they kept singing. y/n just giggled, her shoulders shrugging up happily.
"happy birthday dear y/n... happy birthday to you!" the song finished with a massive burst of cheers, clapping, and whistlings from all her uncles, aunts, and cousins.
"hip hip!" michael called out, leading the chant.
"hooray!" everyone yelled back.
"hip hip!"
"hooray!"
"hip hip!"
"hooray!"
the room erupted in laughter before michael leaned down close to her ear, his hand gently resting on the back of her chair. "okay, blow out the candles, baby. but make sure you make a really big wish beforehand. close your eyes tight."
y/n squeezed her eyes shut, squeezed her hands together, and took a second to think of the most perfect wish a five-year-old could possibly imagine. then, she opened her eyes, leaned forward, and blew with all her might... except she mostly just blew air right over the top of the flames, completely missing them.
everyone let out a collective, affectionate laugh at her attempt.
"oh, almost!" michael chuckled softly, rubbing her back. "want daddy to help you out?"
y/n nodded with a big, goofy smile, feeling a little breathless. "yeah, help me."
"okay, on three. one, two, three—"
together, they both took a deep breath and blew at the same time, completely extinguishing the tiny flames and sending a little puff of white smoke into the air. the kitchen lights instantly flicked back on, and everyone cheered again.
tito walked over, leaning over the counter with a curious smile. "so, what did you wish for, sweetpea? you gotta tell your favorite uncle."
janet immediately smacked his arm with a loud thwack. "tito, stop! she can't tell you that! you know the saying, if she says it out loud, it won't come true!" she scolded him, though she had a playful smirk on her face.
y/n just giggled at her aunt and uncle bickering, completely ignoring the rule anyway. "i wished for a pony!" she announced proudly to the whole room.
everyone chuckled, michael shaking his head with a big smile.
"well, in that case, aunt la toya will get you one, baby," la toya piped up from the back of the room, giving y/n a sweet wink.
y/n clapped her hands together excitedly, already visualizing riding a pony around the ranch. "really?! thank you, aunty!"
"hey, you know the tradition, y/n? when you cut the cake, you have to kiss the closest boy to you," tito said, a mischievous smile spreading across his face as he leaned against the kitchen island.
michael just laughed, shaking his head as he pulled the big cake knife out. "tito, don't go filling her head with your nonsense rules."
but as michael officially sliced through the thick layers of frosting and cake, he couldn't help himself. he handed the knife off, closed his eyes with a huge, dramatic smile, and leaned his face down, pointing his left cheek right toward her so she could easily reach it. he stood there waiting, fully expecting his birthday kiss.
except the contact never came.
instead, y/n leaned the complete opposite way, giving marlon a big, loud kiss right on his cheek.
marlon's eyes went wide with pure triumph, and he instantly burst out laughing, pointing a finger at his brother. "ha! told you i was the favorite! read 'em and weep, mike!"
michael opened his eyes, slumping his shoulders dramatically as he looked at his daughter. "traitor," he mumbled, putting on a fake pout that made his voice sound incredibly high and whiny. "after all the pancakes i made you this morning? i see how it is."
y/n just giggled hysterically at his reaction, leaning across the space to throw her small arms around his neck. she pressed a kiss right against his cheek too, to make up for it. "i love you, daddy! you're my favorite boy too!"
"okay, okay, you're forgiven," michael softened instantly, that melting smile returning to his face as he wrapped his arms around her for a quick hug.
with the drama settled, the rest of the family started passing around plates, and everyone finally got a massive slice of cake and dug in, the kitchen filling with the sound of clinking forks and satisfied quiet as everyone ate. ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
after everyone finished eating, the whole family migrated into the massive living room because it was officially time for the presents.
watching y/n tear through wrapping paper made michael realize all over again just how ridiculously spoiled his little girl actually was. she got a mountain of new dresses, tiny designer shoes, endless toys from her cousins, and randy and tito had even teamed up to buy her a miniature electric car that she could actually drive around the driveway.
but once the floor was covered in shredded paper and ribbons, michael smiled and caught her eye. "okay, now it's daddy's turn for his present."
he walked over to a small table, picked up a tiny, velvet-covered box, and walked back over to where she was sitting on the carpet. he sat down right in front of her on his heels, holding the box delicately in his hands. his expression turned a little more serious, but his eyes were incredibly warm.
"this one is really special, applehead," he said softly, his voice dropping to a gentle whisper so the rest of the noisy room would quiet down and listen. "we have to be very, very careful with this one, okay baby? you promise daddy you won't lose it, and you won't break it? it would upset daddy real bad if anything happened to it."
y/n looked at the mysterious little box, her curiosity completely piqued. she nodded her head eagerly, her wide eyes locked on his hands. "i promise, daddy. i'll be super careful."
michael smiled, slowly lifting the lid of the box. he reached inside and pulled out a stunning, delicate gold necklace. it caught the light of the living room, glittering beautifully. on the thin gold chain hung a tiny, intricately detailed pendant.
y/n gasped, her little hands coming up to cover her mouth. "woah..."
"do you like it?" michael asked, a look of pure relief and happiness washing over his face at her reaction. "here, turn around for a second, let me put it on you."
y/n immediately spun around, pulling her hair up out of the way with her small hands so he could reach her neck. michael carefully draped the cool gold chain around her neck, his fingers moving gently as he fastened the small clasp.
"there you go," he murmured, giving her shoulder a quick squeeze before she spun back around to face him.
"pretty, daddy," she mumbled, her head tilted all the way down as she looked at the shiny gold resting against her shirt. she reached up with her thumbs, twiddling with the tiny metal piece and running her fingers over the smooth gold chain. it felt so grown-up.
she looked up from the necklace, a massive, genuine smile spreading across her face as she looked right at him. "thank you, daddy. i love it so much."
michael's heart completely melted, and he leaned forward, opening his arms wide so she could launch herself into his chest for a massive birthday hug.
soon enough, the chaos finally died down and everyone started heading home, each aunt, uncle, and cousin kissing her cheek and saying one last happy birthday before walking out the front doors. ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
the massive house felt completely quiet now. y/n and michael sat together on the big living room couch, the television playing some old cartoons in the background. she was exhausted, her head resting heavily on his lap while her small legs curled up on the cushions. michael slouched back against the pillows, lazily stroking her hair and running his fingers through the strands.
"good day?" he asked softly, his voice a low rumble in the quiet room as he looked down at her.
y/n nodded, her eyes already half-closed. "yeah! uncle marlon was so funny. he got all mad when i took his candy."
michael chuckled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. "he sure was. he's just a big kid himself, you know that."
he glanced over at the clock on the wall and let out a little sigh, realizing how late it had gotten. "alright, applehead, look at the time. it's time for bath and bed," he said, shifting his weight and effortlessly scooping her tired body up into his arms.
he carried her upstairs and ran a warm bath, the bathroom filling up with bubbles. to keep her from falling asleep in the tub, they sang "the girl is mine" together—his song with paul mccartney. michael sang his parts with a theatrical grin, and y/n mumbled her lines back through her giggles, splashing the water around.
after drying her off, helping her brush her teeth, and getting her dressed in her favorite comfy pajamas, he carried her back to her bedroom. he gently laid her down under the covers, pulling the heavy blankets all the way up to her chin. "comfy?" he asked, smoothing the sheets. her necklace was placed in a safe jewelry box on her nightstand.
she nodded, but her eyes instantly darted over to the nightstand, where her small birthday candy bowl was sitting. while michael was busy adjusting the pillows, her hand quickly sneaked out from under the blanket, pinching a miniature candy bar.
michael caught her immediately, gently taking the candy right out of her fingers. "it's way too late for that, silly. you can have some tomorrow after breakfast, i promise," he said, tossing it back into the glass dish.
but the second his back was turned to grab her stuffed bunny, y/n reached out and did it again, a cheeky grin on her face.
he sighed, turning around with his hands on his hips. "y/n," he warned, his voice a mix of a laugh and a lecture as he took the candy back a second time. "you know what, let me just fix this..." he reached over and picked the entire bowl up, holding it out of her reach. "there. no more temptations."
"i don't want today to be over," she pouts, crossing her arms under the blankets and looking up at him with big, sad eyes.
michael's expression softened completely, and he sat down on the edge of her mattress. "i know, baby. but you have to sleep so tomorrow it can be someone else's special day somewhere in the world. remember we have to share the birthdays?"
she sighed, thinking about it for a second before nodding reluctantly. "maybe they will have a piñata too!"
he laughed softly, leaning over her. "yeah, maybe they will. a really big one."
he leaned down all the way, pressing a warm, lingering kiss right against her forehead. "goodnight, baby. i love you," he whispered against her skin, his hand gently resting on her cheek. "so, so much, my angel."
"i love you more, daddy," she whispered back, her voice barely audible as she finally let her eyes close. "today was the best day ever."
he smiled, his heart feeling completely full. "i'm glad, princess. tomorrow we can play together more and try out your new car. sweet dreams."
he stood up, walking quietly across the room. he flicked the main light off, leaving just the soft glow of the hallway light pouring in. he left the bedroom door open just a tiny crack, tightly clutching the stolen candy bowl against his chest before giving her one last look, smiling to himself, and walking down the quiet hallway. ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹ YAY!

it was a busy, sunny day in neverland. it was one of those days where michael would invite a massive group of kids over, wanting nothing more than for everyone to just let go and experience a completely magical day. music from the rides filled the air, and everywhere you looked, children were laughing and running around.
that was the case for all the kids... except for y/n.
she stood pretty far back from the crowds, watching the chaotic fun from afar. her tiny four-year-old hands were busy twiddling with her thumbs, her little face pinched with pure nervousness. her heart was beating so loudly in her chest that she was sure people could hear it; she just absolutely hated big crowds. she swallowed hard, nervously glancing around for anywhere she could hide.
standing a few yards away, michael and janet were watching the whole thing. michael had his arms folded over his chest, his eyes fixed entirely on his daughter with a heavy frown. janet stood right to his left, matching his gaze.
"i'm so worried about her, dunk," michael sighed, his voice barely a whisper over the sound of the amusement park music.
janet turned her head to look at him, her expression softening. "don't be, mikey. she's only four. all kids go through a shy stage at some point," she said, her tone just as gentle and soothing as his.
"i know, but it hurts seeing her look so lonely out there," michael admitted, shifting his weight. "i just want her to have fun like everyone else."
janet shrugged lightly, keeping her eyes on y/n. "sometimes you just need to give them a little push to get out of their shell. maybe not today, since she looks so overwhelmed... but definitely talk to her later, mikey. she trusts you more than anyone." she gave his shoulder a warm, reassuring pat before turning around to greet a group of kids running past them.
michael let out another long sigh, his chest sinking as he watched his little girl. she still looked so small, so nervous, and so painfully alone in the middle of paradise. ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
it was now nightfall, and the busy, loud energy of the day had finally melted away into a quiet evening. they had just finished eating dinner, and now they were curled up together on the big, comfortable living room couch, the soft glow of the television screen lighting up the darkened room as cartoons played quietly. michael was stroking her hair softly, his long fingers gently running through her curls to help her wind down.
"daddy?" her soft, tiny voice broke the silence.
"yeah, baby?" he responded instantly, his voice dropping into that warm, attentive whisper he always used just for her.
she stayed quiet for a long moment, staring down at her little lap, before she finally found the courage to ask the question that had been weighing on her all day. "why can't i make friends?"
michael’s heart instantly tightened and twisted painfully in his chest. it hurt him physically to hear those words come out of his four-year-old's mouth.
"aww, applehead," he cooed softly, his heart aching. he shifted his position and gently pulled her onto his lap, wrapping his long arms securely around her tiny frame. "now you listen to me, okay? look at daddy. there ain't anything wrong with you, sweet girl. absolutely nothing at all, okay?"
y/n looked up at him, her big eyes swimming with unshed tears. "but everyone else has friends but me," her little voice cracked, and the first tear spilled over. "i see the other kids hang out with each other at the park and on the rides. they laugh together. but i get so scared, daddy. my tummy hurts and i freeze up." she gave a pitiful little sniffling sound, her lower lip trembling. "i want friends too. i don't want to play by myself anymore."
michael watched her sadly, his thumb gently wiping away the tear rolling down her cheek. it broke him to see her feeling this way, especially because the pain she was describing was a pain he knew all too well.
"you know... when i was about your age, i didn't have any friends either," michael said softly, hoping to bring her some comfort.
"really? but you're famous," she said, blinking through her watery lashes and wiping her cheek with the back of her small hand.
he let out a soft, melancholic chuckle at her innocence. "that doesn't mean i always had friends, pumpkin. when i was little, i was always too busy with rehearsals and performing. i didn't have time to go to a regular school or play in the sandbox with the neighborhood kids. and i hated it. i hated watching all the other kids play tag together from the window while i had to work, knowing i couldn't join them. i remember feeling so jealous, and so incredibly lonely."
she quieted down, processing his words, before a small thought popped into her head. "but now you have aunt lizzy," she mumbled, referring to elizabeth taylor.
michael laughed softly, a genuine smile breaking across his face. "you're exactly right about that, baby. aunt lizzy is a wonderful friend. but it took time to find people who truly understood me. and to make those kinds of friends, sometimes you have to take a deep breath and put yourself out there, even when it feels scary. you just have to take one little step and say hello to the kids."
she looked down, nervously playing with the silver buttons on his shirt, twisting the fabric between her small fingers. "what if they don't like me?" her voice was so quiet it was barely audible over the cartoon music.
"are you kidding me? who wouldn't like you?" michael smiled wide, his tone instantly shifting into something playful to break her sadness. "you're strong, you're brave... and you are very, very messy!" he giggled, suddenly digging his fingers into her sides to tickle her.
she squealed and dissolved into a fit of giggles, wriggling around in his lap to escape his hands. "daddy! stop!"
he laughed along with her, hugging her tight against his chest until she calmed down, kissing the top of her head. "but most importantly... you are kind-hearted, y/n. and anyone would be lucky to be your friend. daddy is going to help you, i promise."
y/n wrapped her tiny arms tightly around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. "promise?" she whispered, her little voice full of hope.
michael squeezed her close, rubbing his hand up and down her back. "i promise, applehead. daddy's got you." he leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against the side of her head, just holding her for a quiet moment until her breathing completely evened out.
"okay, bedtime," he announced softly, breaking the quiet with a gentle pat to her back as he carefully stood up from the deep couch, keeping her securely cradled in his arms.
"nooo," she whined under her breath, her voice muffled against his shirt as she clung to him a little tighter, trying her best to fight off the heavy sleepiness that was finally catching up to her.
"yesss," he teased right back, mimicking her exact playful, whiny tone with a soft giggle.
he carried her down the long, quiet hallway of the ranch, his footsteps completely silent against the floors. the house was peaceful now, a total contrast to the chaotic energy of the afternoon. as he walked into her bedroom, the soft nightlight cast a warm, comforting glow over everything, making the room feel entirely safe and far away from the big, scary crowds she hated so much.
a week flew by in a blur, and before they knew it, the gates of neverland were opening up for another big group of kids. over the past seven days, y/n had been working so hard. she had practically used michael as her personal audience, pacing around the living room and practicing exactly what she wanted to say, while michael sat on the floor pretending to be a kid at the park, giving her pointers and cheering her on.
but now that the day was actually here, the real world felt a lot scarier than practicing in the safety of the living room.
y/n was once again standing pretty far back from the crowd, watching the other children run around. the familiar nervousness was bubbling up in her chest, making her tiny hands shake just a little bit.
from a distance, michael was watching her like a hawk. janet was right by his side again, both of them keeping a close eye on the little girl. michael’s knuckles were practically white from how hard he was crossing his arms, his own chest tight with anxiety for his daughter.
"come on, baby... you got this," he whispered under his breath, his eyes pleading with her to just take that first step.
y/n took a shaky breath, looking around the bright playground. that's when she spotted him—a little boy who looked to be right around her age, sitting by himself in the middle of the massive sandpit. he had a classic 90s mushroom haircut, his brown bangs falling into his eyes as he happily pushed a bright yellow construction truck toy through the sand.
y/n took one more deep, grounding breath, remembering everything she and her dad had practiced. she forced her little legs to move, walking over to the sandpit at a slow, hesitant pace.
she stopped right at the edge of the wooden border, nervously swaying back and forth on her feet as her face began to heat up. "hi," she said, her voice incredibly shy and quiet.
the little boy paused, stopping his truck in the dirt. he looked up at her, blinking for a second before his face completely lit up with a warm, friendly smile. "hello!" he said cheerfully, shifting his weight so he was sitting back on the heels of his feet, totally open to her being there.
y/n bit the inside of her cheek, her heart doing a nervous flip, but she pushed through it. "i like your truck..." she mumbled, her face turning a bright shade of red.
"thanks! i like your shoes!" he smiled.
y/n blinked, completely caught off guard by the compliment. she looked down at her simple pink shoes, a tiny, genuine smile finally tugging at the corners of her lips.
"thank you..." she said shyly, twisting her hands together behind her back before summoning up all her courage. "i'm y/n."
"i'm caleb! do you want to play?" he asked without a second thought, pointing excitedly down at the big plastic toy in his hands. "i have another truck in my bucket over there that you can use if you want!" he smiled, his eyes crinkling.
hearing those words, y/n’s face completely softened. the heavy weight of fear in her chest instantly melted away into pure relief, and she nodded her head eagerly. caleb grinned and patted the empty, soft sand right next to him. "come!"
standing across the yard, michael’s face broke into a massive, radiant smile as he watched y/n carefully step into the sandpit and sit down right next to the little boy. janet approached him from behind, her eyes following his gaze until she saw the two toddlers already trading toy trucks. a warm smile spread across her face, too, and she rested her arm gently on his shoulder.
"see? all good," she murmured, giving his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "i told you she'd be just fine, mikey."
michael let out a long, heavy sigh, all the tension finally leaving his body. "i just don't want her to feel what i did... you know?" he said softly, his voice full of a deep, protective love. "i don't ever want her to know what it feels like to stand on the outside looking in."
janet’s expression softened completely, looking up at her brother with nothing but pride. "i know... and she won't. you're doing so good, mikey. she's a happy kid."
michael kept watching them, a look of pure fondness in his eyes as he saw y/n laugh at something caleb did. but then, he paused. he tilted his head slightly, his eyebrows knitting together as a sudden, overprotective dad thought popped into his mind.
"but... she had to choose a boy?" he asked, his voice suddenly narrowing as he gave janet a funny, suspicious look.
janet let out a loud laugh, completely caught off guard, before playfully smacking him right on the shoulder. "oh, be quiet, mikey! she's four!"
michael giggled, rubbing his arm where she had smacked him, though his eyes never really left his daughter as she happily dug her hands into the sand. ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹
later that evening, after the sun had gone down and the long caravan of buses had finally taken all the kids back home, the ranch was peaceful once again. michael was standing in the kitchen, pouring himself a glass of water and enjoying the quiet, when the sound of tiny, hurried footsteps came thudding down the hallway.
y/n burst into the kitchen, her little face flushed pink from running, her hair a bit messy from a full afternoon of playing. she sprinted straight toward him, her eyes wide with pure joy.
"daddy! daddy! i made a friend!" she gasped out, completely out of breath but unable to contain her excitement. she started bouncing up and down on the heels of her feet, her little hands shaking with adrenaline. "his name is caleb and—and he likes trucks! and he lets me use the big yellow excavator, daddy! we built a giant castle in the dirt!"
michael couldn't help but chuckle, the sound warm and full of relief. he quickly set his glass down on the counter and dropped to his knees, opening his arms wide so she could crash right into his chest.
"i saw, applehead!" he beamed, scooping her up into his arms and lifting her high into the air, making her squeal with laughter. he pulled her close against his shoulder, holding her tight as he rocked her back and forth. "i saw the whole thing from the grass. i told you so, baby. i told you everyone would love you."
y/n wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder with a massive grin. the quiet fear from the week before was completely gone, replaced by the happy, bubbling energy of a four-year-old who finally felt like she belonged. and looking down at her, michael knew that everything was going to be just fine. ⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹ im so sorry its been so long! but im back now hehe

━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━
easter morning at neverland was always magical, but 1992 felt extra special. the second you opened your eyes, you saw a bright trail of plastic easter eggs and a big, fluffy bunny plushie sitting right at the end of your bed. you let out a little giggle and kicked your blankets off.
right on cue, the bedroom door creaked open. michael peeked his head in, a huge smile breaking across his face when he saw you awake.
"good morning, apple head! you like your bunny, love?" he asked softly, walking over and kneeling down so he was right at your height.
you nodded your head so fast your hair flew everywhere. "yes! the easter bunny got exactly what i wanted, daddy!" you cheered, scooping up the pink plushie and squeezing it tight to your chest.
"well, the easter bunny must've known you've been a very good girl! and guess what?" michael smiled, his eyes crinkling. "your aunt and uncles are coming over for lunch today."
your eyes went wide. "aunty janet and uncle marlon?" you asked softly, the excitement building in your chest.
michael chuckled and gave your nose a gentle boop. "yes, uncle marlon, aunty janet and the others too. so, we have to get up and get you dressed, okay?"
he scooped you up into his arms, making you giggle as he carried you over to the wardrobe. he swung the doors open to look at your clothes. "what do you want to wear, baby?"
you grinned and pointed a tiny finger straight ahead. "that one!" you said pointing to a pretty baby blue dress.
"good choice!" michael said, pulling it out.
he carefully helped you change out of your pajamas and into the dress, then spent a few minutes gently brushing your hair. to finish it off, he put a little pink flower hair clip. "there we go," he said softly, stepping back to look.
you stood on your tippes and did a little twirl. "do i look pretty, daddy?"
michael’s eyes softened completely. "you always do, honey. now let's go downstairs and get some breakfast."
you grabbed your pink bunny plushie by the ear, keeping her close as you held michael's hand to walk down the big staircase. as you reached the bottom, michael looked down at you. "what are you gonna name her?" he asked, nodding at the toy.
you stopped and thought hard for a moment, tapping your chin. "princess cordelia!" you exclaimed happily.
michael laughed as he led you into the kitchen and lifted you into your chair. "that's a beautiful name, sweetness."
around noon, car doors slammed in the driveway as the family finally pulled up. a second later, the front door swung open and uncle marlon walked in, his voice filling the whole house.
"where's my girl?" he announced loudly.
your face lit up. "uncle marlon!" you shrieked happily, running straight toward him.
he chuckled, dropping down to his knees with his arms wide open. "come here, you!" he groaned playfully as you crashed right into his chest. he laughed, lifting you up into a tight hug. "grr, you've gotten so big already!"
michael walked out from the living room with a massive grin, greeting the rest of his brothers and sister coming through the door. aunty janet came up right behind marlon and gasped.
"there she is!" her sweet voice echoed through the hall. she stepped closer, gently placing a hand on your back. "aww, look at you! still so beautiful!"
you giggled, hiding your face slightly in marlon's shoulder from all the attention.
"man, why don't i ever get these kinds of greetings?" jackie complained from the doorway, crossing his arms and teasing.
"shut up, jackie," jermaine said, rolling his eyes as he walked past him and gave michael a hug.
out in the backyard, a long wooden table was set up on the grass, covered in plates of food. instead of sitting in your own chair, you sat right on uncle marlon’s lap, picking at your food while the adults ate and talked.
aunty janet leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table as she looked at you. "so, little miss, when are you starting school?"
you completely froze, your fork hovering in mid-air. "school? no school for me," you protested, shaking your head.
the whole table chuckled. "but you got to learn somehow, kiddo. school is fun!" marlon said, booping your nose.
you scrunched up your nose and shook your head. "learning sucks. i have everything i need right here," you said, tapping a tiny finger against the side of your head.
michael burst out laughing, shaking his head at your stubbornness.
"okay, i think it's time for the egg hunt," michael announced, standing up and brushing some crumbs off his pants.
the second he said it, you excitedly jumped right down from marlon's lap.
"y/n! you wanna be on my team?" marlon asked with a grin.
"no way, girls stick together!" janet chimed in quickly, winking at you.
you giggled, looking back at marlon and poking your tongue out at him. "yeah! girls stick together. i'm going with aunt janet," you said, grabbing janet's hand.
marlon dramatically clapped a hand over his chest. "wow... you've really damaged me, y/n. i don't know how i can continue on," he fake-cried, burying his face in his hands.
you just giggled harder, tugging janet toward the open grass.
in the end, you managed to get the absolute most eggs, mostly because you were the quickest on your feet and could dive under the bushes easier than anyone else.
"good job, apple head!" michael said softly, walking over and peeking into your overflowing basket. "wow, you got a lot."
"i just got beaten by a four-year-old," jermaine said, sighing as he sat down in a lawn chair.
"WE just got beaten by a four-year-old," tito corrected, shaking his head as the rest of the brothers sat down, completely wiped out.
janet laughed, pulling you into a side hug. "us girls stick together because girls are better. isn't that right, baby?" she asked you.
you nodded eagerly, looking over at your uncles. "yeah! boys stink and they have cooties!"
with everyone thoroughly beaten, michael gestured toward the big glass doors. "alright, let's head inside before it gets too chilly. movie time?"
everyone agreed quickly. you led the pack, proudly carrying your heavy basket of eggs back into the house and straight into the cozy home theater room.
as everyone started settling into the big, plush couches, you looked up at your dad. "can we watch the little mermaid, daddy?" you asked softly, hugging your pink bunny tightly that michael got from the living room.
michael’s eyes crinkled with a warm smile, and he gently placed his hand on your head. "of course, sweetpea," he whispered back.
michael settled down onto the largest sofa, and you scrambled up right next to him, dumping your basket of easter treats between you. uncle marlon hopped onto the couch right beside you, taking the spot to your right and nudging your shoulder playfully.
"alright, miss easter bunny," michael whispered as the theater lights began to dim. "are we opening these chocolates or what?"
you didn't need to be told twice. you dug into your basket , pulling out the little eggs, then passed a few down the line to marlon and the others. as the movie started to roll on the giant screen, you leaned your head back against michael's chest, happily chewing on your chocolate while his hand gently stroked your hair.
"i think it's time she starts being homeschooled," michael whispered softly to janet, who was sitting right on the other side of him.
janet smiled warmly, looking past michael to peek at you as you focused on the movie. "she'll be okay. she's smart," janet whispered back, leaning over to rest her head against michael's shoulder. "you're a good dad, michael."
michael’s smile widened. he didn't say anything else, just wrapped an arm around his sister and kept his eyes on the screen, completely happy with his family gathered around him.

"keep the mask on, okay applehead? so the camera people dont get your face." michael said softly, gently fitting the fluffy purple masquerade mask over your face. your little hands reached up to adjust the soft edges, nodding small against his touch.
"okay daddy," you whispered. it was easy to see how worried michael was; he let out a shaky sigh and wiped his palms against his trousers, trying to stay calm for you. you just watched him, feeling the heavy, quiet tension building inside the car. michael gently pulled you onto his knee, wrapping his arms securely around your small frame.
"wrap your arms around my neck, love. hold on tight." you did exactly what he asked, burying your face against his shoulder. your little heart was racing as the muffled noise from the crowd outside grew into a loud roar. the door clicked open, and a wall of shouting voices and clicking cameras instantly filled the space. your grip tightened around michael’s neck.
he stood up quickly, shielding the back of your head with his large hand as he carefully ducked to step out of the car. blinding white camera flashes lit up everything around you, penetrating right through your closed eyelids and making your breath come a little faster. you could feel how securely michael was holding you against his chest, his rapid heartbeat thumping against your own.
"michael! look over here! just one photo with the kid!" voices boomed from every direction, aggressive and loud. people were shoving past each other, trying to get close to the two of you. the questions were a constant barrage, echoing through the air as he tried to take a single step forward.
as he moved through the sea of people, his security team worked frantically to keep a path clear. "daddy," you whimpered, tucking your face deeper into his neck to escape the noise. michael’s heart tightened at the sound of your small voice. "please step back," he said to the crowd, his voice soft but firm, laced with a growing hint of stress.
the crowd kept pressing in, ignoring the warnings. "i said step back!" he repeated, his tone sharpening as he focused entirely on moving forward. the flashes grew even more frequent, lighting up the sidewalk like lightning.
michael was struggling just to navigate the chaos. suddenly, a hand reached out too close, brushing against you and making you jump in fear. "no! don't touch her!" michael snapped, snapping his head around and pulling you even closer to his chest as you let out a frightened sound. in the frantic shuffle, you looked up for just one small moment and a stray hand managed to get the edge of your purple mask, pulling it slightly askew. you shrieked, completely overwhelmed by the commotion.
"daddy!" you cried out, tears spilling over and you dug your face back into his neck. "hey! i said do not touch her! step back! now!!" michael’s voice boomed over the crowd, filled with a raw, protective anger they had never heard from him before. "i'm sorry, applehead, i'm so sorry," he whispered frantically, his voice breaking as he used his whole body to shield you, finally bursting through the heavy hotel doors.
"look at me, baby," michael said softly once the heavy doors clicked shut behind you, cutting off most of the noise. the lobby was vast and quiet, though you could still see the swarm of people pressed against the big glass doors, their cameras still clicking away.
you looked at him. you were sniffling and sobbing, the mask sitting crooked on your face. michael gently straightened it for you, brushing your hair out of your eyes. "you were so brave, baby girl. so, so brave." he kissed the top of your head, holding you as close as he could.
"i got you, i got you. you're completely safe now, pumpkin. daddy's here," he murmured, rubbing comforting circles into your back until your breathing finally started to slow down against his shoulder. as he carried you deeper down the quiet hallway, the chaos outside completely faded away. you knew nothing could hurt you as long as you were safe in your daddy's arms. ₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚

MIDNIGHT IN NEVERLAND
━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━
part 2 of my mini series! part one is here ━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━ scenario: y/n sneaks out late at night in neverland to see the giraffes.
warnings: none
⋆⁺₊⋆ ━━━━⊱༒︎ • ༒︎⊰━━━━ ⋆⁺₊⋆
nighttime shone down on neverland, the moon was bright, lighting the whole sky. you were wide awake in bed, thinking. you knew your daddy wouldnt be happy if you went outside with the animals, but you couldnt help but feel sad that they were alone outside. so you did the unthinkable. you got up, grabbing your blue silk robe that uncle marlon got for you, and slid your feet into your favorite fuzzy pink slippers.
you tiptoed to your bedroom door, opening it just a crack. you peered around the corner and down the long, dimly lit hall where your dads room was. no movement was heard from inside, and the heavy oak door remained shut. you took in a deep breath, your little heart hammering against your ribs, and went downstairs trying to make the steps not creak. but of course, for some reason the universe decided it was funny to make everything louder at night. you groaned to yourself as the stairs creaked beneath your weight, instantly freezing in place to see if your dad had moved. you held your breath, counting to ten. but no, it was silent.
you let out a quiet sigh of relief before rushing across the grand foyer to the massive glass back doors. you struggled with the lock for a second, standing on your tiptoes until it clicked. turning the handle, you pushed the door open and went outside. the cold california night air hit you immediately, making you shiver and pull uncle marlon's robe tighter around your chest.
the gravel crunched a little too loud under your pink slippers as you ran across the lawns, your oversized robe fluttering behind you like a cape. the ranch felt totally different at night. all the giant amusement park rides were shut down, standing like sleeping monsters under the moonlight, and the cheerful music that usually blared from the outdoor speakers was completely turned off. it was a little spooky, but you were on a mission.
you ran past the fountains to where the animals were held, sneaking into the gates of the private zoo. you walked past the sleeping primates and went straight to the giraffes.
the massive wooden barn loomed high over you, but you managed to slip through the heavy side door that the handlers had left unlocked. inside, the air was surprisingly warm and smelled like sweet alfalfa hay. you crept up to the tall wooden fencing of the enclosure, craning your neck all the way back. sitting comfortably in a bed of fresh straw, one of the younger giraffes blinked down at you with huge, sleepy dark eyes. you let out a soft gasp, reaching your small hands through the slats of the fence. "hi," you whispered, completely forgetting you were supposed to be fast asleep in bed. "are you lonely too?"
the giraffe blinked at you slowly, still not getting up from its cozy bed of straw. you sighed, leaning your cheek against the cool wooden slats of the fence. "i get lonely too at night, it gets boring," you said, your voice sounding extra small in the giant, quiet barn. "but tomorrow is a new fun day! i wonder what daddy and i are doing, maybe i can ask him to teach me skateboarding."
the giraffe just twitched its pointy ears, as if it was actually listening to your secret plans. the animal blinked its heavy, fringed eyelids, chewing slowly on a piece of leftover hay. at the sound of your tiny voice, its long ears twitched forward again. slowly and gracefully, the massive animal uncurled its neck, lowering its head down, down, down until its soft, velvety nose was right in front of your face.
meanwhile, inside the main house, michael woke up wanting to get a glass of orange juice. he yawned and rubbed his eyes, shuffling down the dimly lit hallway. as he passed your bedroom door, he glanced inside. he kept walking at first, his brain still foggy from sleep. but then he froze. he quickly walked back, pushing the door open all the way, and realized your bed was completely empty.
panic instantly settled into his heart and his breath quickened. being a highly protective dad, his mind immediately raced to the worst possible scenarios.
he checked in the nearby bathrooms, flicking on the lights. "y/n?" he called out, his voice echoing nervously in the quiet house. he ran downstairs, checking the living rooms and the kitchen, but there was no sight of you anywhere. he ran his hand through his curly hair, his palms sweating as he looked over at the glass back doors. one of them was unlatched, swinging slightly open and letting in a draft of chilly night air. "oh no," he whispered to himself, thinking the absolute worst.
he burst outside, not even caring that he was just in his full silk pajamas and completely barefoot. "y/n?!" he called out loudly, his frantic voice echoing across the massive, dark ranch. michael stopped for a brief moment, forcing himself to think clearly. "the animals," he realized, remembering how much you loved visiting them. without wasting another second, he ran toward the zoo as fast as his bare feet could carry him over the cold grass and gravel.
"i should get going before daddy wakes up," you said to the giraffe, giving its velvety snout one last little pat. the giraffe's ears flickered again. "he will be worri—"
"y/n!" michael's voice shattered the quietness of the barn, the heavy wooden doors swinging open.
you turned around, your little eyes widening in the dim light. "uh oh—"
"there you are!" he rushed straight to you, his bare feet sliding slightly in the loose dirt and straw. "what the heck, applehead? you gave me such a scare!" he scooped you up into his arms, lifting your small body effortlessly. he cradled the back of your head and pulled you into a tight, desperate hug, sighing in pure relief. you could feel his heart hammering wildly against his chest.
"i wanted to say hello to the giraffes, they were lonely!" you mumbled into his shoulder, clinging to his pajama top.
michael sighed and shook his head, pulling back just enough to look down at your face. "no, look at me. hey," he said softly but firmly, waiting until you made eye contact with him. you could see the lingering fear in his gentle brown eyes. "we don't do that, y/n. you gave me a total heart attack. i thought someone took you!"
"im sorry daddy," you mumbled, burying your face into his shoulder.
he sighed, the heavy panic finally leaving his chest, and gently brushed your hair out of your face with his warm hand. "its okay, lets just never do that again okay? if you want to visit the animals, you tell me." you nodded, wrapping your small arms tightly around his neck.
"lets go back inside, my feet are freezing," michael said, shifting your weight as he turned toward the barn doors. you looked down at his bare feet resting in the dirt.
"where are your slippers?" you asked, pointing a small finger downward.
"inside,"
"why are you walking around the house with no slippers?"
"i didnt think i needed them tonight," he chuckled softly, stepping out of the dark barn and back onto the moonlit pathway.
"you always need your slippers," you said, echoing the exact rule he always told you. michael just giggled, carrying you securely on his hip all the way home across the chilly, quiet grounds of the ranch.
michael entered your room, the soft glow of your nightlight illuminating the space. he gently set you down on the edge of the mattress and took your blue robe and pink slippers off, setting them neatly aside. "okay, back to bed with you," he whispered, smoothing down the sheets. "we can play more in the morning."
you settled into bed, pulling the thick, warm covers all the way up to your chin. michael stood by the bedside, staring down at you for a long moment as he sighed. "you really scared me, y/n."
"im sorry," your small voice said, looking up at him with wide, apologetic eyes.
"i know you are," he replied softly, leaning down over your bed. "but please dont do that again." you nodded your head against the pillow, promising him silently. he smiled gently and kissed your forehead, his soft curls brushing against your cheek. "goodnight applehead."
"goodnight daddy," you murmured. he lingered by the doorway for a second, leaving the door cracked open just an inch so he could hear you, before his quiet footsteps faded back down the hall.

HEAVY SPOONS & BIG SURPRISES

hello! this is a mini series about y/n, who is michaels first child from a past lover. i thought this was a cute little idea for my first series as i have many ideas for it!
━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━━━━━⊱⋆⊰━━━━
it was a sunday morning in neverland, 1991, and little y/n, who was four years old, was already up to no good.
you sat at the table with a big tin bowl in front of you, a mixing spoon beside it, and a box of brownie mix. well... what was brownie mix. you were completely concentrated on what you were doing. although you had chocolate powder almost everywhere, you had a mission and were absolutely determined to finish it. you had decided to surprise your daddy with some brownies—something you had never actually made before, but had seen your grandma make.
chocolate powder coated the shiny wooden surface of the kitchen island like a layer of dark snow. it was smeared across your cheeks, dusted over your tiny apron, and there was even a line going across your forehead.
you picked up the heavy metal spoon with both hands, trying your absolute best to stir the thick, lumpy powder. you remembered watching grandmother katherine stir the bowl so easily at her house, making it look like magic. but for your small, four-year-old arms, it was hard work. you let out a little puff of air and wiped your forehead with the back of your hand, leaving another chocolate streak across your brow.
"applehead?"
you heard the soft voice of your father and froze.
you slowly turned your head, clutching the big metal spoon tightly against your chest like a shield. michael was standing in the doorway wearing his favourite red corduroy shirt and loose black trousers, his hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. he blinked, looking from the chocolate-covered island to the powder floating in the air, and finally down to you, his tiny, messy daughter.
for a second, it was completely quiet. you held your breath, wondering if you were going to get in trouble for making such a massive mess in the kitchen.
then, michael’s shoulders started to shake. a soft, breathless giggle escaped his lips, and he covered his mouth with his hand, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
"oh, my goodness," he whispered, walking over with light, quiet steps. he knelt down right next to your chair so he was at eye-level with you, reaching out to gently brush a stray clump of chocolate powder off the top of your head. "what is all this? are you trying to turn my kitchen into a chocolate factory, y/n?"
"i'm making a surprise," you mumbled, your voice small as you looked down into the dry, lumpy bowl. "for you. like grandma katherine does. but the spoon is too heavy, daddy."
michael’s expression softened completely, his heart melting at the sight of your sticky face. he didn't care about the messy countertops or the ruined apron at all.
"a surprise for me?" he cooed, giving you that warm, proud smile that always made you feel safe. he reached over and gently took the heavy spoon from your hands. "well, every good chef needs an assistant. do you think i can help you finish it, applehead?"
you nodded fast, your eyes lighting up. michael laughed softly, pulling up a stool right next to you and rolling up his sleeves, ready to help his little girl make the absolute messiest brownies in history.
with a lot of help from michael, you both managed to scrape the thick chocolate batter into a pan and slide it into the hot oven.
not even ten minutes had gone by before you were already leaning against the kitchen counter, staring intently at the closed oven door. you were practically bursting at the seams with impatience.
"is it done yet?" your voice whined, heavy with pure boredom.
michael chuckled softly, walking over to the sink to wash the stray chocolate spots off his hands. "no, applehead. we still have time. it takes a little while for the magic to happen." he dried his hands on a towel and looked down at you with a gentle, thoughtful smile. "do you want to colour while we wait?"
you thought for a moment, biting the inside of your cheek as you weighed your options. colourings was fun, but waiting was so hard.
"can we colour pictures of neverland?" you asked, looking up at him with big, hopeful eyes. "with the ferris wheel and the elephants?"
"we can colour whatever you want, sweet girl," michael said, his voice warm and soft.
he reached down and scooped you up into his arms, completely unbothered by the leftover powder on your apron. he carried you out of the kitchen and down the long hallway toward the family room, where a massive wooden chest filled with colouring books, crisp white paper, and every colour of crayon imaginable was waiting for you.
he set you down gently on the soft carpet, dropping down right beside you with a dramatic, playful groan that made you giggle. he opened the chest and began pulling out handfuls of bright crayons, scattering them between the two of you like little plastic treasures.
"alright, princess," he said, handing you a bright yellow crayon. "show me what we're drawing first."
you both leaned over the big sheets of paper. your tiny fingers gripped a green crayon while michael carefully filled in a drawing of a carousel. every few seconds, you peeked over at his paper, your eyebrows furrowing in serious concentration.
"don't go outside the lines, daddy," you warned, pointing a chubby finger at a tiny spot he missed.
michael chuckled softly, his shoulders shaking as he carefully pulled the crayon back inward. "i'm trying my best, captain. your grandma katherine is the master artist, i'm still learning."
finally, after what felt like an absolute eternity for a four-year-old, a loud, sharp ding! echoed from the kitchen.
you gasped loudly, your entire back straightening up as your eyes went wide. "the brownies!" you exclaimed, dropping your crayon without a second thought and scrambling to your feet.
your little feet smacked against the hardwood floor as you bolted down the hallway toward the kitchen.
"y/n, wait! don't touch them! it'll be very hot!" michael called out, his voice a mix of amusement and sudden panic as he scrambled up from the carpet to chase after his tiny, fast-moving daughter.
by the time he burst into the kitchen, you were standing a safe two feet away from the oven, bouncing on your toes with your hands clasped together under your chin. michael let out a breath of relief, adjusting his red corduroy shirt before walking over to the counter. he grabbed a pair of thick quilted oven mitts, giving you a playful, dramatic wink.
"stand back, princess," he whispered, opening the oven door.
a wave of sweet, warm, gooey chocolate air rushed into the room, making your mouth instantly water. michael carefully slid the baking pan out and set it on top of the stove. the edges of the brownies were perfectly crinkled and smelled absolutely amazing.
"can we have them now please please please!" you begged, jumping up and down on your tiptoes with your little fists clenched tight against your heart.
michael stood by the counter, pulling off the thick oven mitts and tossing them aside. he looked down at you, folding his arms across his chest with a playful, teasing look on his face.
"you haven't even had breakfast yet, applehead," michael said, raising an eyebrow.
you stopped jumping, pouting your lips out as far as they could go. "but brownies are breakfast! they have eggs in them! i saw the box!"
michael let out a chuckle. he couldn't even handle your toddler logic. he walked over and picked you up again, settling you right on his hip so you could look down at the hot pan safely.
"nice try, princess," he chuckled, bopping your nose with his finger. "but that doesn't count. how about we eat some real breakfast? you can have them for dessert later after dinner."
you stared at the pan of brownies, your face falling instantly into a dramatic pout at his words.
"after dinner?" you whined, the word sounding like the worst punishment in the entire world to your four-year-old ears. "but daddy, that's forever away! the sun hasn't even come up all the way yet!"
michael laughed softly against your hair, rocking you slightly on his hip to soothe your tiny tantrum. "it's not forever, silly. the day goes by fast when we're having fun. plus, if you eat chocolate now, you'll be bouncing off the walls before lunch."
you rested your chin on his shoulder, crossing your small arms as best as you could while he carried you over to the fridge.
"i want pancakes then," you mumbled into his shirt, still a little stubborn but willing to compromise if it meant getting something sweet. "with smiley faces on them."
"pancakes it is," michael said, setting you down safely on a high stool at the clean side of the island. "one giant smiley face pancake coming right up for my favourite little chef."
he immediately went to work, hum-singing a quiet melody under his breath as he pulled out the mix and a frying pan. you watched him, your frustration completely melting away as he did a little spin on his heel while reaching for a spatula, making you giggle.
