The Reluctant Victor, inspired by The Reluctant Bride by Auguste Toulmouche - I just thought that this painting was SO perfect for Katniss and I had to draw it!

Interviews with hockey players are fantastic, because it is a complex game that can be spoken about at length, but during the intermission they'll find the Wettest player imaginable on the losing team and for thirty seconds they'll ask them things like "what do you need to do to get more pucks in the net?" And the player (panting, haunted behind the eyes) says something like "well, we've got to get them in there"
I think the root of this Troy Situation is the same problem as a lot of other Situations here, wich is that there's a loud part of this fandom that genuinely doesn't like the source material.
They don't like these books, they don't like most of these character and they actively dislike Rachel Reid, and that's FINE but at that point it's like, why put all this time and effort on a thing you clearly don't like? Who knows people are all kinds of weird, block and let live I guess đ”âđ«
right like im not gonna begrudge you or say you're "not a real fan" if you haven't read the books but when you take characters and twist them to fit this narrative you've created for the sole purpose of being mad about it? maybe find something else to watch?
OH MY GOD THANK YOU I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS FINDING ALL THIS DISCOURSE HEAVILY INFANTILISING SHANE LIKE THAT IS A BIG HOCKEY MAN WHO HAS CANONICALLY GONE THROUGH SO MUCH SHIT WHY DO PEOPLE THINK HED HOLD A GRUDGE AGAINST A YOUNGER GUY WHO HE PROBABLY DIDNT EVEN REGISTER WHEN HE HAD TO FACE DALLAS FUCKING KENT
this is basically every time troy is mentioned by shane in tlg
yes, shane acknowledges that he thought troy was a homophobic douchebag (which, most of the v0y*g3rs are too, it's not significant enough for shane to really care), but he's also the one that suggests to ilya that troy might not be so bad
the ONLY instances where shane expresses dislike for troy is when shane gets jealous about his friendship with ilya. do we REALLY think ilya would be as easy to forgive and become close friends with a man who had thrown racial slurs at shane? ilya who fought his own brother for being rude to svetlana? I've seen a lot of people say that troy's redemption was "too easy" but ive also not seen anyone be able to point at anything that would be considered actually unforgivable by the characters (NOTE: IM TALKING ABOUT THE CHARACTERS. NOT WHAT REAL PEOPLE WOULD PERSONALLY NOT EXCUSE. THE CHARACTERS ARE NOT PARAGONS OF MORALITY)
and to top it all off, shane literally forgets that troy is the second openly queer player in the league? that man is NOT significant enough to take up real space in shanes brain. why do people think he'd hold a grudge against assholish comments troy may or may not have made when he was kents lackey? the end of tlg even has them hinting that they're gonna be friends!
sure, people might choose to think they wouldn't get along, but nothing in the text actually supports that? its so weird to me. shane isn't a little baby who needs to be protected from the big scary world. he's a realistic character that's gone through a lot of change and growth in his own right, and I don't see him as the type to think other people are incapable of change
also: this is gonna be the last post i make about this/the last anon i answer. I don't wanna invite further discourse onto this blog. if you wanna talk more about it tho, my dms are open
its so delicious to me that shaneâs one vice is having filthy nasty life affirming sex with the love of his life like the kind of fucking most people only dream about he is the furthest thing from a hedonist that a person could be he has not smoked a single cigarette he does not eat the thin sliver of cake he doesnât lie in on sundays he doesnât skip a day in the gym he doesnât call in sick he doesnât let himself slip he has never done a tequila shot he has never stayed up late into the night his ONE & ONLY exception to a life of diligence and restriction and control and restraint and properness the one thing he wants badly enough to allow himself is being fucked like a whore by a big strong man who would die for him its so truly beautiful and compelling to me

What advice do you have for a 14 year old girl?
This is so vague I love it. The voices you are hearing are real, god is speaking to you. The nation of France needs you. Don your armor, take up arms, lead the French army. This is your destiny, joan. When the flames come for you let them lick your bones and laugh.
getting onto the troy and shane dynamics train and it's like. i think shane especially gets angry because he can't be angry. like oh wow, you dealt with your queerness by projecting as a bigot and saying homophobic and racist shit on the ice. you got angry at everyone and said whatever you felt like you needed to say and nobody ever questioned you for it. and then when you felt like it was enough you just... walked away.
and here's shane, who is never. never. allowed to be angry. has to be perfect, has to pull his weight and more, has to push the team forward even when they're saying the same shit behind his back; has to ignore the slurs on the ice and grit his teeth and push forward. and he can never leave it behind. for all his life, he's going to be the gay asian hockey player. there's no out for what's hurting him. he just has to stand there and take it when he's outed, when the sport itself tries to threaten him, when he's not allowed to have anything just for himself. and he's not allowed to be angry about it.
Everyone is getting into the Shane and Troy of it all so I am jumping in to add my own headcanon. I think Shane HATES Troy. And I think he actually hates him even more after he comes out. Like I think he always hated Troy the way he hated Dallas Kent and the dozens of other players who spewed slurs at him on the ice. But that was hatred bordering on indifference. He knew he was better than them and the slurs were just a desperate attempt to get under his skin because they couldnât beat him with skill alone. Troy and those other players are nuances that he does not spare a thought about off the ice.
But once Troy joins the centaurs and becomes Ilyaâs friend and then has then has the audacity to come out? As if that erases everything heâs done? Watching people accept and forgive him when Shane was the one taking the brunt of Troyâs treatment? Watching Troy come out at a pride night and celebrate with his team and fall in love when Shane has put himself (and Ilya) through hell remaining in the closet for nearly a decade because of the pieces of shit like Troy? Is still actively going through that hell?
And then when Troy actually becomes best friends with Ilya and Shane joins the team and Shane is expected to be friendly with him? Oh he is fuming. He does not give a fuck that Troy is a better person now and it was his own fears/internalized homophobia making him behave that way. Shane was gay and in an actively hostile environment and you know how often he said slurs in his career? Never. Ilya is in a closeted relationship and from a country where homosexuality is criminalized and you know how often he said slurs? Never. Same with Scott Hunter. The fact Troy was gay the whole time makes it feel like a betrayal. Troy knew what it was like to be othered, and that didnât stop him.
Shane is so tired of having to bear these responsibilities he never asked for. Heâs so tired of taking the blame for his own pain. Heâs tired of being the Asian role model who doesnât get to get angry. Who has to grin and bear it. He never had the option to behave like Troy, so all his internalized homophobia was only ever pointed inward. Troy took the easy way out and he still got the happy ending Shane fought tooth and nail for. Itâs not fair.
And now Shane is finally out. Heâs finally on a team with his husband with players who support him. But fucking Troy Barrett is there. And he just has to grin and bear it.
EDIT: if you love this idea, check out the fic I wrote ft. Shane crashing out at Troy
