Imagine feeling unwanted and misunderstood your entire life and then you meet a beautiful boy who looks at you and only sees you and he's so perfect you think he's too good to be true and then you find out that actually he is real and then he tells you he likes you and then you kiss him and then he tells you you were amazing after a game u actually tried at for him and then you lose him in a fucking deadly riot and you start to realise slowly that he has been hiding something from you this whole time and now he's going to die and you're neither getting him back nor your answers and you're stressed and you're panicking and so you ask ur best friend where he is and what's been going on hoping for a clue to start from and then your best friend goes "you were always going to lose him" Andrew Minyard you are so valid you were Not crazy for that i applaud your restraint actually

I’ve never seen it framed this way before and I think it makes the most sense of any other interpretation I’ve read. I don’t think that makes it any less fucked up an experience for Kevin or valid for Kevin to feel betrayed, but I think this perspective is a good reminder that Andrew likely wasn’t aiming to kill Kevin he was just freaking out in his Andrew way.

something that i’ve noticed a lot in this fandom is that people don’t always seem to understand that actions can be interpreted multiple ways. what kevin did wasn’t okay and what andrew did wasn’t okay either. but actually it’s not a moral failing on either’s end

the experience for kevin to be violently assaulted by this guy who had promised to keep him safe, one of the few people he can genuinely rely on, is really not something that can just be pushed away (especially not to hold it up as aww look what a cute andreil moment!)

and for andrew’s trust to be broken so thoroughly by kevin, someone that he had thought wouldn’t betray him in such an intimate way, is really fucked up, considering that kevin was there for thanksgiving. kevin should have expected volatile anger in response

both things can be true at once. one character is not at fault while the other isn’t; andrew knows how kevin reacts to violence aimed at him, kevin knows how andrew reacts to lying

what i’m getting at is that the idea of moralising one over the other really misses the point of the scene. and probably even the whole book.

it’s an unfortunate situation where both were acting in neil’s best interest (kevin was keeping all of this to himself at neil’s request. andrew knew that neil couldn’t be safe) but both in ways that put each other directly at odds
