In the word document. Straight up âBeating itâ, and by âitâ, haha, well. Letâs justr say. my whumpees
I think it's because I'm a STEM major (chemistry to be exact), but I often can't take a lot of lab whump seriously bc I'm just like... that's improper lab procedure. What do you mean they just started cutting into him randomly? What do you MEAN they're testing his pain tolerance? What are they even observing here? What are the levels of this experiment? What is the control? What are the constants? How do they know which factors are effecting their results? They can't publish this shit. Whumper will be laughed out of peer review.
It has come to my attention that not everyone knows proper lab procedure and experimental design! So here's how to write lab whump like a real scientist:
Step 1. Lab cleanliness and Safety
- In all labs, no matter what kind of science you're doing, it's important to keep a clean environment. (This isn't the same as a sterile environment, which you would need if you are doing any kind of major surgery.) Mostly, it's important to keep floors and walkways clear, to prevent tripping hazards.
- In most labs, latex gloves, pants, and close toed shoes are required. Long hair must be put up in a ponytail or bun. Sometimes goggles are necessary, but only when working with heat, pressure, or volatile chemicals. Eating and drinking in the lab is also expressly forbidden.
- In whump context, I would think that ensuring the ahem... test subject, is securely restrained would be of the upmost importance. You don't want your doctors getting bitten or scratched on the job.
Step 2. Experimental Design
- This is something I see a lot of writers misunderstand and it's a pet peeve of mine. Before you can start torturing your Whumpees, first you gotta ask: "What are the scientists trying to figure out?"
- For example, lets imagine a whumpee with very fast healing. The scientists studying them might want to figure out exactly how fast their healing works. So do they just start cutting Whumpee into pieces willy nilly? Nope. They gotta be systematic. Here's how I would design this experiment:
Independent Variable (The thing that you change): The amount of flesh removed from Whumpee.
Dependent Variable (The thing that you measure): The amount of time it takes for Whumpee to heal.
Levels (The different values of the independent variable): 5mmÂČ, 10mmÂČ, 100mmÂČ, etc.
Replicates (The amount of times you repeat each level): Should be at least 3
Control (The data you are comparing to): A normal human's healing speed.
Constants (Things that stay the same between trials): Same part of Whumpee's body, same time of day, same depth of injury, etc.
Cofactors (Other variables that could be potentially affecting your data): Stress levels of Whumpee, any drugs that might be in their system, conscious vs unconscious, hungry, etc.
- With all this in mind, you would run the experiment, with someone recording in a lab notebook real time. (Very important. Lab notebooks can be on actual paper or digital. Most labs use digital these days.)
- Once the experiment is done, you'd examine the data, see if there's any discrepancies or ways that the procedure could be improved, and run another experiment.
- Sometimes, questions answered from one experiment will give rise to even more questions. For example, let's use the healing Whumpee again. Let's say your scientist figured out Whumpee's baseline healing rate. But, they want to know if/how certain drugs affect Whumpee's healing speed. To figure this out, they'd conduct a new experiment, but this time, instead of changing how much flesh is removed, they'd make that a constant, and instead they would change how much of a drug they are injecting into whumpee.
- Experiments are meant to be repetetive and methodical, meaning that your Whumpee may very well have to go through the same thing over and over again, with very minor tweaks here and there.
- Overall, you don't need to worry too much about designing an entire experiment if you just want to write simple lab whump. But, if your whumpers are meant to be official and experienced scientists, then it might be worth it to go the extra mile and show how their scientific brains are working. (And personally, I will always find methodical lab whump more interesting than aimless torture.)
I hope this helped and it wasn't too long. If y'all have any more questions on lab whump and science, feel free to send me an ask. Happy Whumping!
And thank you to @detectingeagle310 for asking me to elaborate lol

Notes on Torturing The Character In The Science Facility
my takes on this trope rarely if ever have anything to do with the character being "special" or being studied for powers they innately have, if they are special its something that was done to them
it's about the medical trauma
it's about the violation and lack of bodily autonomy
the "living weapon" trope, but the key characteristic is catastrophic functionality
i love, love, love the concept of "catastrophic functionality" in a person: character that can tank ludicrous amounts of damage and just Keep Going in virtually all circumstances barring outright dismemberment. They can keep going, so do they "deserve" rest and/or pain relief?
after a lifetime of having their distress treated as whiny and unreasonable, they have what would be a dangerously high tolerance to pain and exhaustion.
another key function of the Science Facility is to fix the damage Character takes, maybe using enhanced healing technologies or 3D printed organs or something. this leads to Character's body being treated as relatively disposable cause "we can just fix them"
extreme version of this: Character can't die even if they wanted to
people who work with Character are informed that they're dangerous and arbitrarily violent, and their fear of Character makes it easier to justify restricting autonomy
It is TRUE, cause Character does not have tools to set boundaries or protect their body other than violence. vicious cycle of being perceived as dangerous and therefore denied autonomy, and being forced to use violence to defend autonomy
the restraints used to hold Character look like major overkill, which underscores how dangerous they are. LOVE this trope
character being desexualized to the point that their non-consent to touch, to being stripped down and examined, or to procedures is trivialized. There is no non-clinical context for their body, and the "clinical" framework eclipses any possibility for bodily violation to be understood as violent.
types of uncanniness: Character looks human but has some subtle inhuman traits or characteristics. (I'm obsessed with reflective eye shine, personally.) OR Character looks like they've been taken apart and put back together, like flesh pulled over a much more unforgiving and indestructible metal scaffold. OR Character gives off "undead" vibes; they're just not quite alive in a way that sets off air raid sirens in people's brains
Often, Character is dead and Came Back Wrong (varying levels of literalness)
anyways yeah. i never stopped writing this trope and probably never will. it's a good one
Childhood Trauma to give your Characters that's not an abusive parent:
growing up in poverty
losing a close loved one to a sickness over an extended amount of time
bullying in school
exposure to unsafe environments (warzones, drug scene, âŠ)
parentification
going undiagnosed for a long time
growing up in politically unstable environments
emotional neglect
witnessing a natural disaster
betrayed by a trusted person of authority (parents, teacher, mentor, âŠ)
being the glass child
social exclusion
loving parents who just did not have the time for them
(AI-less Whumptober, Day 29: Childhood Trauma)
Made one of these :))
Daily Drabble #53
âAn angry, declawed kitten, thatâs what you are,â Whumper said. âHissing, puffing your tail, trying to make yourself look all big and scary. Itâs quite adorable, really.â
âFucking try me!â Whumpee spat in defiance, their fists balled, body pressed against the wall.
âMmm, your ears are back, Kitten,â Whumper stepped towards them. âYouâre shaking, too. Canât you feel it? Poor thing.â Whumper towered over Whumpee, casting them in their shadow. âGo on, feisty. Attack me. See if I bite back.â
Whumpee stared up at them with wide eyes, brow furrowing in concern without even realizing it. They couldnât bring themself to speak.
"Cat got your tongue?"
Former Living Weapon watching their current team playing outside in snow and wanting to join them but not able to get over the fear of not being allowed back inside when they're done
Hey there! Here to deliver Whumpees food!⊠Oh you think itâs too nice/much for them? Do you want to tell Whumper that?⊠Yeah me neither man. I just do what Iâm told. I suggest you do the same
(the food was not whumper approved. carewhumper is secretly giving whumpee whatever better rations they can find)
Ouughghghhg the food pictures make me hungry ffuuckkkkkkk
Not even reblogging because of the whump context, that soup looks delectable,,,,,,,
Prompt #52: Dragon Whumpee
Chain their wings with very heavy iron chains that weight them down. The metal cuts into their wings, and through time, flesh grows over the chains, making it painful to move and impossible to get out of.Â
Keep them in a dark cave that is barely big enough for them. They had to spend years, even centuries, being cramped into the space. And if they grow larger, it gets worse and worse to stay there, but there is no escape. Their body eventually learned to contort to accommodate for their captivity, leaving them deformed without anyway to reverse the damage.Â
A part of the dragon, e.g., scales, tears, breath etc. is harvested incessantly. The âfarmersâ rip out part of their bodies to the point it can generate anymore, leaving bald patches from where their scales used to be, drying out their eyes too much they turn blind, taking away so much of their breaths that they canât break fire or even talk anymore.Â
Punish a dragon who gathers treasures with pouring the molten gold taken from their stash over their body.Â
Cut off their wings/horn/talons and display them like a trophy.Â

whumpee is so bad at resting when they're sick that leader basically puts out an APB and lets the team know that if seen, they are to restrain whumpee by any means necessary and alert the proper authorities (leader, who is pissed, and medic, who is more pissed). i want to see a character with so few survival instincts that it leads to a manhunt
writing advice for characters with a missing eye: dear God does losing an eyes function fuck up your neck. Ever since mine crapped out I've been slowly and unconsciously shifting towards holding my head at an angle to put the good eye closer to the center. and human necks. are not meant to accommodate that sorta thing.
other things I'm bitching about but which could still be useful as writing advice for 1 eyed characters:
2. they're going to favor their sighted side, obviously, but it doesn't always manifest in the way you think. when I walk down a hall I walk much closer to the wall on my sighted side than on my blind side. which is the opposite of how it might seem logical to do that bc it means the world at large is on your bad side, but the reason is I can't fucking See the wall if it's right next to me in the blind side and I end up knocking into it.
3. door frames and poles are my enemy. If your character is smart this will not be a problem but for me it is. I am King of walking into shit I could absolutely see but couldn't tell how far away from me it was. on this note, their blind side hand is getting bashed into every jutting out thing in a 5 mile radius.
4. having 0 depth perception is less of a big deal than you'd think it is. Especially with driving. I've become a Much safer and more wary driver because I can't tell how far the other cars are from me. however I fucking suck at parking now. because I can't tell how far the lines are from me either.
5. you know how people who lose limbs get phantom pains? that happens with eyes too but like. phantom sights. for me it's like. a lot of bugs. like every so often my brain will just put something suddenly skittering beside me there. hate that.
6. it is completely possible to "get stuck" somewhere because your ability to tell how wide a space is is just Gone. shopping isles especially where bumping something or Someone is matter of embarrassment or potentially breaking something. it can be legitimately paralyzing and also irritate everyone around you because they can tell there is Plenty of space for you to get your cart through even if you can't.
7. if the eye is still in their skull it can still be the normal kind of painful. Glares off of shiny surfaces causing weird sharp pains you can't figure out the cause of are genuinely one of gods greatest tests of my patience.
Whumpees whose powers/magic are so integral to them that that blocking the abilities is like blocking their breathing. The same power-dampening tech or anti-magic that weakens others will kill them within hours.
What happens if they are captured? Do they desperately explain that the standard protocol isnât going to work, and promise to obey without it? Are they sedated? Restrained more tightly in other ways? More importantly, are they even believed?
And if the dampener is activated, how long does it take their captors to realize that the whumpee wasnât lying?
snowy whump. where the whump itself isnât necessarily the snow but itâs involved, itâs making things worse, more complicated.
someone driving slowly and carefully, hands tense and gripping the steering wheel while whumpee bleeds and stifles sounds of pain in the passenger seat, slumped over and curled around their wounds. they need to go faster but they canât go faster. the roads are bad and itâs still coming down.
flakes caught in disheveled hair, melting on a fevered forehead. disappearing into hot, pooling blood.
whumpee with broken ribs or hastily-bandaged wounds wincing as they walk, every step making it harder, making their body tense and strain to navigate through the accumulated drifts. the effort and strain of walking through snow is wearing on their whole hurting body.
when whumpee slips and falls, landing hard on the ground. staring up at the sky as is still continuing to snow, melting water soaking through their clothes. chilling them to the bone.
freezing hands trying to do first aid, trying to patch themself or someone else back together. shaking and numb fingers dropping objects, cursing, flexing them and trying again. cant wear gloves, not with this kind of fine motor control. the ticking clock until they wonât be able to use their hands at all, the need to take care of the wounds before that happens.
snowy whump.
i wanna do lab whump but its hard to actually fijd any ideas for specific tortures so.. any promots or ideas
(Whumpee, in the story, was a normal guy then got a alien parasite sorta. Become parta him so now they're trying ti experiment on him bc thry Wanna see what this thing can do now, since its basically merged w Whumpee and changed their biology)
Okay. First of all, you need to decide whether you're going science or torture. Or a mix of a both. If you're going science, you want repetition and analysis. If you're going torture, you want invasiveness. You definitely can do both.
Keep in mind: your scientists are looking for results. Any tests need to be repeated over and over again. That's where a lot of the torture comes from, and the results.
Spinal taps to take spinal fluid, one of the most painful things someone can do. Especially without anesthetic.
Brain scan. CT scan and MRI. They make big, horrible whirring noises, which can react horribly to a sentient parasite. If you've ever seen Venom, you know.
Deprivation (sensory, sleep, food, hydration, social isolation). Sleep deprivation is against the Geneva Convention by the way! Waking Whumpee up to shine a flashlight in their eyes, testing the results of certain foods, refusing water to see the reactions...
Chemical testing. Put 'em in different gasses! Does he really need oxygen? Is he poison resistant? Who knows! We will, once we pump him full of arsenic!
Blood draws!!! They can be painful if done wrong and leave bruises even if conducted perfectly. You can do this repeatedly until it starts to become routine, or you can take too much over too short a period of time and make everything much worse.
Muscle/marrow biopsy. Taking samples. Not fun. The second one has to be done through the hip with a giant needle. It's extremely painful. Remember, you can have this happen more than once.
You could make a mark on an expanse of skin to compare the changes over time. What does a one day old wound look like compared to a two day, or a week old, or a month old one?
Neurological tests. How many fingers am I holding up? Count to ten backwards. What is your name? What is your birthday? Inane questions that never stop coming, blurring the days.
Monitors are very movement restrictive. Lots of wires, they can be sticky and are hard to remove, they beep a lot. Sensory nightmare.
I hope this helps you get started!!
Source: the council. I have too many medical friends.
Whump scenes from the perspective of a transcription of a CCTV recording. Leafing through the papers that make up the report, more than half of it is censored. The things that aren't censored are already bad enough. Thereâs no tone to the writing. Just facts, timestamps. Someone walks in. Then just ââââââââââ, for a horrifying amount of time.
Finally, thereâs actual text again. Whumpee begs for death. Flip another page. Itâs just ââââââ again, till the very end of the report.
Okay I know everyone likes lab rat whumpees who have no idea what's coming for them as they get experimented on and all that but consider-
Consider lab rat whumpees who are fully aware on what's going to happen. Not because Whumper told them but because Whumpee made those tests.
They were initially experimenting on animals. Rats and other small animals mostly. They were working with Whumper to figure out the big question they've had since the tests started. They worked with Whumper because they both were interested in answering that question and concluded that it's better to work together.
Now, they're on the operating table, strapped down and looking at Whumper with fear. Berating themselves as they recall how easy it was for Whumper to drug them and take them to who knows where.
Whumper telling them not to worry and how it's practically an honor to be one of the first people to figure out the question and be the solution itself. Whumpee panicking because they know that some of those tests were not pleasant. Some of those tests were not pleasant and whenever that happened, Whumpee would have the utmost care in making sure the rats would be as comfortable as they can.
Whumpee isn't sure if Whumper will do the same.
This is pretty much concept of cat man lore. Cat man is doctor and professor who teach this stuff so he definitely know what's coming to him and how many malpractice donw
