Since the day that you had met Brandon, you knew that your life was changing. And in the last four years you two had been together, it had definitely changed.
He had gone from the small town boy that you met in Canada to playing on a professional hockey team. This jump wasn't met without its highs and lows though.
Brandon went through a time of feeling his self-confidence drop, never getting signed to Buffalo once drafted and eventually being released as a free agent. He had thought his time was coming to an end but then he was signed to the Chicago Blackhawks.. only for him to play for the Icehogs for months.
Playing for the Icehogs was a big improvement over not playing hockey at all, but you knew that Brandon desired for more. During that time, he went through a crisis.
He believed he wasn't good enough, and it caused strife in your relationship. He questioned going back to Canada which made you feel uneasy since you were still living in the States. Eventually, through all the things that pulled you two apart, you had managed to stay together. Every time one of you was close to calling it off, you never did.
Always talking about the charged moments after the fact, you both agreed that you felt tethered to one another. Not as though you had to be together, but the thought of losing one another was too much. You two had seen each other through so much, and you wanted to keep being there for each other.
Last year, Brandon started getting called up more to the Blackhawks. You could tell ever since he started playing for the Icehogs that his moods were improving, and when he started getting called up, he was elated.
Not long after he had gotten called up and shot the winning goal, he did something entirely unexpected to you. Right after winning a game, he had met you in the terminals and asked you to marry him. Still in his uniform and everything.
When you asked him how he'd known they'd win the game, he had shrugged and given you a shy smile. "I didn't.. I guess I just got lucky."
You said yes and the cheering from his teammates that day made you deaf for the next few hours.
Ever since then, you two had been planning. Unfortunately, you two had gotten engaged right before a worldwide pandemic. Another issue that put strain on both of you.
But even while he was off and playing with the Blackhawks, you two prepped and planned. And after all of that work, all of the tears and strife and separation, your day was finally here.
You stood in the bathroom at the church, your hands clasped together in an attempt to stop shaking. Your mom had gone to find some safety pins for the detachable skirt to your dress, and your sister was in one of the bathroom stalls getting dressed.
"He's pacing!" Your best friend yelled at you as she entered the room. You gave a small smile to your friend in the mirror. She started absentmindedly playing with your hair, pretending to "fix" it. In actuality, she was staying close in hopes that you wouldn't have a meltdown.
Overall, you were calm about the day. You were no Bridezilla, and you didn't care to be. The reason you felt so anxious now though was for a few reasons.
One, you and Brandon had been planning for this moment since last March. It had been almost a year and a half of planning, and it was finally here.
Two, the day had finally arrived and while your reception was at the Plaza in Chicago, the ceremony was supposed to be outside. But of course you both knew better because Chicago weather can change in an instant..
Unfortunately, you two had taken a chance and had gotten burned because it hadn't stopped pouring all day.
This led to you having to scramble around in hopes of finding a place to have the ceremony. The wedding where you were having the reception didn't have room to set up for a ceremony, and it left everyone to scramble last minute.
Fortunately your sister had pulled a few strings and you were now getting ready to walk down the aisle of a beautiful cathedral.
The change didn't stress you out as much as hoping your guests all received the memo about the venue change. You hoped that by having free food and alcohol at the reception that it would make it up to them.
"Stop stressing," your friend said, throwing her arms around you softly. "It's your day and you can't worry about others will think." She soothed you, practically reading your mind.
Your sister emerged from the bathroom stall in her bridesmaid dress. "She's right! You can't be concerned."
They both stood beside you as you looked in the mirror between the three of you. You and your best friend had been friends since you were born, and your sister was only two years younger than you. It made you all best friends by default almost, but the closeness that you felt was incomparable.
"He's pacing, hm?" You asked, smirking and raising an eyebrow at your friend.
She laughed, as you referenced her comment from minutes ago. "Definitely, yes. He's lapped the church about 4 times. The guys are trying to get him to calm down and his brother is talking to him. I think he's trying to distract him." This earned a giggle from all three of you, and your mom breezed through the bathroom door, giving you all an inquisitive look.
She decided to keep her questions to herself and instead held up her closed fist. "I have more safety pins, so let's hope this works!" You turned around as she started safety pinning the dress into place.
The dress you had bought was this beautiful dress that fell onto your body like it was made for you. It was tight in all the places that counted, yet it was modest enough for you to not feel like you were showing everything off.
You had purchased a larger skirt for it though for the ceremony. You figured you could easily take the skirt off between the ceremony and reception. The only problem was that the measurements had been off, causing the skirt to fall off your body when it wasn't safety pinned up. When you realized this, it was too late to get it altered, but your mom devised this plan.
Although you hated to be held together by safety pins, it was very effective. Eventually your mom was done and there was more sighing and "you look so beautiful"s exchanged. You thanked them as you heard a knock on the door.
Brandon's sister peeked her head in the room, taking in your sight. "Oh my god, you're so gorgeous!" She gushed as she ran over to get a closer look at your dress.
When she was done fawning over you, she straightened back up, almost like she was remembering her purpose here.
"Oh, the photographer wanted to know if you were ready or not." She said, almost as an after thought.
Your heart started racing again, fully realizing the implications of what was happening. This was it. You and Brandon were getting married. The thought made you want to laugh and cry at the same time, and all you knew was that you were ready to be his bride.
You two had debated getting first look photos, but the photographer had convinced you to do a first look when you walked down the aisle. She said although private first look photos were "cute", there was a different authenticity to photographing a groom seeing his bride for the first time as everyone else did.
You were excited to see his face when he saw you, but you were even more excited to see Brandon for the first time today. You felt nervous and jittery now, but you knew seeing him would bring you back down to earth.
You were tethered to one another, and he would keep you grounded.
You gave his sister a nod and it earned a grin from all the women in the room. She rushed out, presumably to take the news to the photographer.
You took a deep breath and your mom rubbed your shoulders. You two shared a look that only mother and daughter could share and her eyes filled with tears.
"Mom!" You called, though you were only concerned about crying yourself and ruining your makeup.
"Sorry, sorry. I'm okay," she said, holding her hands up in surrender.
There was another knock on the door, this time being the photographer. She smiled at you and gestured to your sister and friend "Ladies, it's time if you guys want to line up."
They both nodded and followed her out the door. You took your mom's hand as you trailed behind them. Unfortunately, you and your sister had won the shitty father olympics, but your mom always took care of you even beyond anything you could ask.
He had left when you were 8, and you never saw him again. Where he failed, your mom had stepped up and succeeded. She was walking you down the aisle today, and you couldn't imagine anyone better doing the honors.
You shared another look with her and she nodded her head at you. She was giving you the signal that it was okay, and that look alone calmed you some.
The music started playing and you closed your eyes, drinking in the moment. Brandon's brother and your sister were walking first, the best man and maid of honor, respectively.
When Brandon's brother had seen you, he had given you an astounding look and a big hug. "He's going to be speechless," he had whispered in your ear. You appreciated the compliment and had given him a beaming smile. You hoped Brandon wouldn't be disappointed.
You saw your best friend and Brandon's best friend start to move and you thought you were going to black out. This was it. The soft piano music was reaching your ears, and your mom started tugging your arm lightly. The double doors opened again, revealing you and your mom this time.
Your eyes danced around the room, taking in everyone's faces. All of them beaming at you, and you heard a few muttered "wow"s at the sight of you. Your eyes skimmed over everyone's faces, forcing you to look at them before your eyes locked with the only one's who truly mattered - Brandon's.
When your eyes met, your breath was simultaneously knocked out of you and filled your lungs endlessly. That's what dating Brandon was like - being swept off your feet and feeling like you've never been able to breathe so easily.
The photographer was right. This moment was worth it. This first look was worth it. If it wasn't for your mom pacing you, you'd run straight to him and ask him to never let you go.
This cathedral was huge, making the walk even longer than you felt necessary. Everyone was still staring at you, but your eyes were only for Brandon.
His face was split into a grin, one that looked like it would hurt. You could tell he kept trying to tone it down but eventually he didn't hold it back. His face couldn't contain his excitement and it was aimed at you. The girl he had met by chance in an airport security line, and here you two are now, choosing each other forever. All of that love was for you, and it made you giddy.
As you neared the front, you could see his eyes glistening. He wasn't crying, but you knew he was close. You two finally got to the front after what felt like a marathon, and your mom kissed your cheek, telling you that she loved you.
The officiant made a motion for everyone to take a seat, and you handed your flowers to your sister before turning back to Brandon.
His gaze hadn't left you, and when he reached for your hands, your shaky hands fell into his and you let out a breath. Although you could tell he was nervous too, his big hands were helping your small ones to stop shaking.
The officiant started and you could tell both you and Brandon were rigid. You wiggled your arms a little, causing him to crack a smile. His smile caused you to relax and you felt a palpable breath release between you two.
You knew that the officiant was talking and there were people staring at you, but you couldn't take your eyes off of Brandon. His 5'11 stature fit perfectly in his tux. He was looking as handsome as ever, and his eyes hadn't left your face one time.
You stuck your tongue out at him just a little bit and crossed your eyes, causing him to choke out a strangled laugh. The officiant tripped on his words and you sent him an apologetic look, though you'd do it 100 times over to make Brandon laugh.
Brandon pulled you a few millimeters closer to him. Not anything noticeable to anyone else, but noticeable enough for you two. He was itching to have you back in his arms.
You stayed good for the rest of the ceremony, knowing the part where your vows was coming up. When the officiant took a breath and a small step back, you shakily reached your hand vaguely towards your sister. She handed you the folded paper and you unfolded it, although you knew the words by heart.
"Brandon.." You started with a shaky breath and he stepped closer to you now, filling your vision with only him.
You let your hand with the paper fall to your side and you gave Brandon your undivided attention. You could pledge yourself to him in thousands of words, none that needed to be written on a piece of paper.
"Ever since I was a teenager, everyone always thought I would have to marry a lawyer or an accountant," you said, though it elicited a laugh from the crowd, it couldn't be closer to the truth.
"And then you came along, and you shook me out of this glass box I had set myself in. I was worried to take chances and I was worried about letting anyone into that glass box with me.. But what I realized was, instead of letting you into that glass box with me, you completely shattered the walls, even if I didn't want you to at first."
You took a deep breath, concerned you were going to start crying. Brandon saw and scooped your hands into his again.
"I needed that and I didn't realize it. And this boy with tattoos and a shy smile showed me that four years ago.. Now, I get to marry that man. With a few more tattoos and a little bit of a wider smile." You took another deep breath, knowing the tears were going to start falling.
"I love you Brandon. And we've seen lots of shit, but I wouldn't change any of it because here we are - together. And now I get to have a life with you forever. Come the good, come the bad, I know I always want you to be the one to shatter any glass walls I try to build. I love you. It's always going to be you."
You were definitely crying now, hoping your makeup wasn't smearing. Brandon was a mess too, rubbing his red eyes and letting the tears flow freely. You could hear sniffles but you couldn't peel your eyes off of Brandon.
He reached into his pocket for his vows and came up empty handed. "Other pocket," he said, holding up a finger in a "please hold" way. The motion caused you to laugh, and a riff of laughter came up from your guests.
The emotions were okay, they were definitely prompted. But you also knew that you and Brandon were jokesters so it felt good to laugh.
Brandon came up with his paper this time. His hands clearly shaking even worse than yours were.
You reached out your hand to touch his arm lightly, "B" you whispered quietly. His eyes found yours and you could see his physical stature exhale. You felt good to be his calming presence in that moment. He took another deep breath before he began.
"When I met you, I thought you had a stick up your ass," he said crassly, causing the entire group of guests to laugh loudly. Your smile stretched across your face as you clung to his words.
"And I really thought there was no way that I would ever vibe with this girl who was standing beside me in an airport line.. but then I heard you talk to the security person and your voice held so much sincerity that it struck me. Everyone had passed by that security person grumbling about the delayed flight and having to go through security.. but not you. You asked him how he was doing and you looked at him like he was the most important person in the world at the moment."
Brandon looked you in the eyes now, opening his mouth. "And that's the moment I knew I wanted you to look at me that way. Even if it was for 10 seconds, I wanted to look like the most important person to you. I wanted this gorgeous girl in the airport to give this gangly boy 10 seconds of her time. I wanted to feel like you had eyes only for me."
"How do you remember that?" You whispered, though you knew you weren't supposed to interrupt his vows.
He shrugged and looked at you. "Because I knew from that moment I was going to spend as much time as I could trying to get you to look at me that way." He slipped his piece of paper in his back pocket now.
You two had gone way off script, but it was so much more raw this way.
He took both of your hands now, and grasped them tightly. The shaking was gone, the nervousness had settled. It was only you two in the room - in this moment.
"Ever since that moment, I have only fallen deeper and deeper in love with that girl at the airport. And although we've had our moments of shared looks of hatred -" he paused to let out a little chuckle. "- the way you look at me is enough to keep me afloat. I love you (y/n), and I want to be on the receiving end of those looks forever. And I promise baby, to make you smile as much as possible and to never stop throwing bricks at your glass walls."
He smiled at you now, taking a deep breath indicating the finish of his vows. Your vows felt messy and all over the place, but to you, they were perfect and beautiful.
Brandon brushed a tear from your cheek with the pad of his thumb, causing you to realize that you had been crying. Actually, you had been bawling like a baby.
You two looked at each other in wonder as the officiant continued on. "Better hurry before these two maul each other," he joked as he started to read more of the standard wedding ceremony.
Everyone else chuckled as he continued on and you thought of how lucky you were in this moment. You already knew that, but it was just being reconfirmed to you over and over.
âDo you have the rings?â The officiant asked. You both looked at him briefly and nodded your heads. Brandon got yours out of his pocket and your sister handed you his.
âNow, repeat after me.â The officiant instructed. You two repeated the standard vows, slipping the rings on each otherâs left hand.
As you two said âI doâ, the officiant gave an explanation of your rings.
âThe ring finger on your left hand is the only finger on either hand that has a vein that runs directly to the heart. This is why the ring is traditionally worn on that finger. And, (y/n) and Brandon, remember that although the other person may not physically be there, this ring is a representation of them always being there with you."
You both smiled at each other as Brandon mouthed an âI love youâ to you.
âNow, with one last thing to do, Brandon, I'm sure you've been waiting for this moment. I'm pleased to announce, you may now kiss your stunning bride.â
You and Brandon closed the small space between you two and you kissed each other to the sounds of your friends and family yelling. When you two pulled away, he kept your left hand in his right one, and you turned to face your guests.
âFor the very first time, may I please present to you, Mr. and Mrs. Brandon Hagel.â Before the officiant was even done, your friends and family were jumping up and yelling so loudly that it drowned the officiant out.
You two celebrated right alongside them as you walked out of the church and your wedding party followed. The plan was for you and the wedding party to stay and have some pictures done while the alcohol and appetizers started flowing at the reception.
Your photographer had caught you right outside the doorway where you exited and had told you there was a slight break in rain.
âIf we go now, we may be able to get some good outside shots!â You and Brandon had agreed quickly, and you were preparing how to get there.
Brandon suggested a park that was right next to Navy Pier and Lake Michigan. The pictures would be beautiful, and it wouldn't be too far away from the reception.
âHey! Do you want me to drive you guys there?â Brandonâs brother had asked since your wedding party and families would be going too for pictures. You had almost said yes when Brandon cut you off.
âIâll drive us,â he said emphatically. You gave him a questioning look but trusted he knew what he was doing. When you two got to his car, he put the passenger seat all the way back to give you space to sit down.
When you two had climbed in and he started driving, you grabbed his hand. âWhy didnât you let your brother drive?â You asked curiously.
A small smile took over his face. âI wanted to be alone with my beautiful bride.â
Even though you two were married now, his words still caused you to blush. You two sat in comfortable silence on your way there, and before you knew it, you were already arriving at your location. It was only a ten-minute drive, but Brandonâs insistence to drive made sense now.
Today was crazy, in an amazing way. And the alone time you were met with, even just for those few minutes, fed your soul. When you pulled up, the wedding party all got out of their respective cars and went to pose for pictures.
Minus the rain, it was beautiful and cool outside, making for some beautiful photos. When you guys had spent half an hour there, you decided it was time to pack back up and go back to your reception so you didnât keep the guests waiting.
The drive back to the reception was good for your soul too, you and Brandon making jokes the whole time.
âSo, like, I thought I was going to pass out at the beginning.â He said suddenly, causing you to throw your head back and laugh. âBut seriously, I never even imagined how amazing this day would feel.â He said, giving you a sweet look.
You reveled in his words, happy that he seemed just as happy as you were. You two made it back to the reception that was being held at a large hotel in downtown Chicago. Although your ceremony was going to be an outdoor, uncovered event, you both at least had the foresight to rent a large reception area that was indoors.
Your families and photographer were in front of you, so they jumped out of their cars and waited for you two to get out. Your sister ran ahead of the group because she wanted the DJ to be able to introduce you when you walked in.
Although you thought it was a bit formal and silly, you let her since it was your wedding day. Everyone else who had just gotten back was kind of milling around talking about logistics, food, toasts, and everything else. You appreciated these moments too.
Although your families were both talking to you and Brandon as you waited on your sister, your hands were clasped together keeping you two close to one another. Itâs not as if you two couldnât be apart, but it was just that you didnât want to be â not right now.
Finally, your sister came back out beckoning everyone to the doorway. Your families entered first as she held you both at the door. âNow, you have to wait here until you hear the DJ start talking and then you can enter.â She said with a flourish as she ran into the hotel without giving you time to respond.
You and Brandon shared a look and both laughed. âWeâre not doing that.â You both said at the same time, causing your laughter to continue.
âLetâs go,â you said, tugging his hand as you went to enter the door. Before you reached the door, he spun you around and landed a kiss on your lips.
âI love you,â he whispered. You leaned up to give him another kiss and to mumble sweet words to him, but your sister ran out of the hotel entrance, ruining your moment.
âGuys! Are you even listening?? Come on!â She yelled, giving your arm a light tug. You and Brandon shared a look again, and you winked at him trying to convey that this would continue later.
You both walked into the reception as the DJ was introducing you, and there was more cheering from your friends and family. You both walked up to the wedding party table where your bridesmaids and groomsmen were sitting. You were a fairly small group, but enough that you had wanted to sit at a table together. And you made sure that there were enough seats for their significant others if they had chosen to bring a date.
You both sat down in your seats, Brandon pulling your seat out and making sure you were comfortable before having a seat himself. Although a lot of people saw him being sweet because it was your wedding day, Brandon was always like this. He always made sure you were comfortable in all situations before he got comfortable himself.
He sat down and you both were handed glasses of champagne as a chef came out of the kitchen to talk to you two. âWeâre ready for dinner if you two are,â
Brandon gave him a smile and a nod, and the chef was off. You felt Brandon squeeze your leg through your dress and you knew that was his way of staying tethered to you as you two knew the day was going to pick up again.
Your thoughts were met with reality as the next hour and a half went by in a whirlwind. You two were eating, talking with guests, and just trying to keep up with the energy levels.
The alcohol was flowing, though you two were trying to be careful for now, you knew all bets were off for both of you when the dancing started.
You felt your sister and Brandonâs sisterâs presence next to you at one point as you turned around from talking to a few of your coworkers who were attending. âHey, the first dance is about to happen.â Brandonâs sister stated.
She pointed to the bottom of your dress and you realized you still needed to ditch the larger skirt. You bid goodbye to your coworkers and followed your sister and his sister to the grand bathroom. You had tasked them both with helping you get the skirt off when it was time for dancing.
They started to help you unzip it and take the safety pins off as you held onto the lavatory of the bathroom to not fall over.
âMy brother is going to die all over when he sees how tight the rest of this dress is on your body,â Brandonâs sister said, causing you to laugh.
You guys dealt with the skirt and she carefully hung it up and pulled out her phone. âCan we take a picture together?â She asked you and your sister. You both nodded and she pulled you in for a mirror selfie.
Although this day was about you and Brandon, it felt really really good to have all of your loved ones here. You three made some silly faces and finally there was a rapt knock on the door. âGirls?â You heard your mom call.
You guys scrambled and your sister pulled open the door. You gave your mom a hug as you guys started the short walk back to the reception area. âHoney, that dress hugs your curves in all the right places.â Your mom told you.
You appreciated her compliment, and you all entered the room once again. It was like night and day. The bathroom was quiet, but the reception room couldnât be louder. You could definitely tell that people were taking full advantage of the open bar. You were happy with this though because you wanted your guests to have just as good of a time.
âNow that the lovely bride is back, looking better than ever might I add,â the DJ said, sending you a wink. âMay I please have everyoneâs attention as I introduce the bride and groom for their first dance.â
You made your way to the makeshift dance floor, your eyes darting around for Brandon. You still hadnât spotted him, but you assumed he would just meet you up here. Some people quieted down so they could watch your first dance, and that started your nerves too.
You heard a low whistle and you turned around to Brandonâs eyes slowly grazing up and down your body. His look was dark and it made you tingle in a good way. Although you were having a blast, you knew the honeymoon was going to be extraordinarily hot. How could it not be? Brandon was hot.
You smirked a little as he stepped closer to you and offered you his hand. âCare to dance, Mrs. Hagel?â You smiled and curtsied at him.
He pulled you closer as the DJ started playing your guysâ chosen first dance song â Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer. You felt your nerves start to melt away as Brandon held you close.
âI hope you know that the dress youâre wearing right now is doing a lot of things to me, baby.â Brandon whispered as you two started to dance. You smiled, and a small chill ran down your spine.
âCareful, I may take you in the bathroom,â he said, giving you a smile and a wink. You laughed loudly causing him to give you a funny look.
âHey!â He said, pretending to be offended.
âNo, itâs not that. I mean it sounds great in theory, but trust me, Iâve been in the bathroom and it's not gonna be big enough for that.â You said, shaking your head and laughing. He laughed too and you fell into a comfortable silence as you two danced to your song.
The nerves you had felt at the beginning didnât exist anymore. All that existed was you and Brandon, and it made you feel confident to be in his arms.
Too soon, the song ended and you knew you two would have to go through the other motions before being able to dance together again. You were getting ready to break away before Brandon dipped you down and placed a very steamy kiss on your lips, causing most men in the room to let out a âwhoopâ and most women to gasp.
You were inwardly gasping too. This was definitely nice, but neither of you had very much PDA. Although it was your wedding, so you figured you both had a free pass for the day.
He pulled you back up and pulled his lips from yours. âI love you so much, baby. Iâm so happy youâre my wife.â He said where only you could hear.
âI love you too, Brandon.â You whispered back, his words making you feel like you were floating on clouds.
The rest of the night was a whirlwind as you and your friends and family danced, laughed, and there were even a few more tears shed. Although there were moments where you and Brandon were like two ships passing, you two never really lost sight of one another.
You were always giving each other silly faces across the room, brushing hands as you walked by, or giving each other a wink. This is what you meant by always being tethered to Brandon, even if you two werenât physically together, you two felt drawn to one another.
As the night was drawing to an end and everyone was either absolutely tired or tipsy â or both â you fell back into your chair as well. Getting ready to take a bite of your wedding cake.
Brandon joined you and perched on the edge of his chair, grabbing both of your hands. âDid you have a good day today?â He asked, and you knew he was asking genuinely.
You nodded vigorously and leaned in to give him a kiss. âI got to marry my best friend, how could I not?â You asked him.
You felt proud as you saw a blush creep onto his face. âI really fucking love you.â He spoke slowly. You gave him another kiss before returning the sentiment.
âI canât wait to spend the rest of my days with you, Mrs. Hagel.â He said, bringing your left hand to his lips and giving it a soft kiss.
Things between you and Brandon hadnât always been easy. There had been stress, things that threatened to tear you apart. You knew the future wouldnât always be easy either.
But in this moment, you knew that no matter what happened, you and Brandon would face those things together â come hell or high water.
You adjusted your seat to where you could lay back into Brandonâs chest a little bit, and he welcomed the gesture openly. He mindlessly ran a hand up and down your arm as you two sat there and took in your guests still dancing and having fun.
If you could frame any moment in life, it would be this one. Not because it was your wedding necessarily but because after a long day, you got to run to Brandonâs arms and he would accept you despite everything.
You looked up at him catching his attention. âCan I help you?â He asked playfully.
You stuck out your tongue before saying anything. âI just thought that there is nowhere else I want to be in this world right now except here in your arms.â
He smiled and kissed your cheek softly. âMe too baby, me too.â He whispered as you both took in your guests. By this time tomorrow, you both would be jet setting off to Hawaii for your honeymoon. But for now, you were happy to be here with him, the world seemingly quiet.
This was all you could ever have wished for in life, and it was all thanks to him.

This was all you could ever have wished for in life, and it was all thanks to him.
hey there! if possible, i'd love to request a blurb! would you be able to do prompt list 2, #27 (âTake me back to the good old daysâ) under angst with kirby dach/any player you feel comfortable and motivated to write it for? looking forward to reading all your blurbs! <3 (love @matsbarzal)
I hate you for this because I feel like I always write Kirby with angst. <3
27. Take me back to the good old days.
Sometimes, when days got really hard, youâd spend the evening after work on your couch watching comedies that could guarantee to make you laugh and eat cookies. Sometimes, when the sadness really got to you, youâd listen to Taylor Swift and bake a chocolate cake for one. Sometimes, when you missed him more than anything despite breaking up eight months ago, youâll cuddle on your couch with a blanket, watch a romantic comedy, and eat ice cream. On the days where you didnât miss him and everything felt great, youâd try to watch a hockey game, but only one of your favorite teams, not his team. Youâd never be ready for that.
Some days, you don't feel the need to drown your sorrows in food and entertainment to make your body numb. Instead, on those days, the littlest reminders made you want to cry in the bathroom at work or scream into a pillow. On those days, it was the little things that reminded you of what you missed because of him.
Someone brought in maple doughnuts from a local donut shop. You thought nothing of it when your coworker told you to go to the breakroom to get one to eat. You thought nothing of it when you smelled the maple from feet away. You had no thoughts of him until you sank your teeth into the maple doughnut. Kirby was captain of this previous yearâs World Juniorâs Championship. Kirby was the captain of Team Canada. Kirby played on Team Canada who wore the maple leaf. The maple leaf which happens to come from the same plant that maple syrup came from. You swallowed that bite and walked back to your desk. When no one was in sight, you tossed the doughnut in the trash and put your napkin on top so no one would see. You immediately ran to the bathroom to wash your hands and wash the smell of maple off yourself. A doughnut was enough to remind you of Kirby.
You were at the grocery store. A random grocery store that has little to no significance to you and Kirby. Walking down the aisle, you stop in front of the paper towel section and look for your favorite brand that happened to be on sale. Your eyes were scanning the row when your eyes settled on a low-quality, store-brand version of the paper towels. The same brand that Kirby bought the one time he went grocery shopping for you. The same brand that Kirby mistakenly bought and ended up ripping before it left the package and couldnât soak up enough spills. You and Kirby laughed about that toilet paper brand for weeks and weeks until you managed to use it all. You never let Kirby go grocery shopping for you, and yet, grocery shopping had a memory of Kirby for you.
You were looking out the window from your bedroom and watched as the snow fell onto the cars parked on the street. You watched as a brave soul stepped out of your apartment building and tried to unlock their door. The snow was so packed that it was barely possible to see the headlights through the snow. This person walked to the driverâs side and reached for the handle. When they were met with four inches of snow, they pulled their hand back in shock. They shook their head, locked the door, and went back inside. It must not have been that important, then. You immediately begin to tear up remember that this happened to you and Kirby after the first night he spent with you. He only packed enough for one night, so he had to go back home. When he left your apartment, he ended up coming up and said that his car was way too packed in snow. Now, a commonality in the winter held enough power to hurt you.
You needed someone to take you back to the good old days. You needed someone to take you back to the days before Kirby was in your life. You needed to go back to the good days before you loved Kirby and were happier. You needed to go to a time when you werenât stepping on eggshells wondering if something was going to remind you of Kirby and send you down a spiral. You needed to feel better, but how was that possible when everything in your home reminded you of Kirby?
