Feedback. Woobin had to convince himself that this was what it was, that him fishing for a positive response wasn’t just a subtle attempt at feeding his ego. It wasn’t often he received the opportunity to delve into a possible employee’s mind to know what sort of first impression he gave off, after all. But, he would have been lying if he said he wasn’t the least bit pleased with Adam’s observations. “Used to getting what he wanted and when he wanted it,” Adam had said, and his words really fitted Woobin to a tee.
After lifting his cigarette from the glass ashtray and taking his last puff of it, he crushed the dying embers in the soot and typed a response:
sovereign_: You win some and you lose some. sovereign_: Though I’m quite sure you’re only overreacting. sovereign_: You’ll receive a call any moment now. I’m sure of it.
To any, his words of encouragement were just that–words of encouragement–and would be of little significance in the way things played out. He was only an anonymous friend, after all, and what more, an online friend who could only reach out to Adam the same way a book could touch its reader.
Woobin, however, was a man who was “used to getting what he wanted and when he wanted it,” and remaining powerless behind a screen wasn’t how he wanted to approach a relationship within his grasp. He gave the conversation a minute or two of silence before he picked up his phone and searched for Adam’s number. It hadn’t been saved under a name just yet. If it had, Woobin probably would have felt even more nervous (embarrassing, really) calling someone whom he was in the position to hire. Adam was anticipating his call, yet Woobin was the one with the clammy hands and dry throat.
He kept the conversation going in the chat, not wanting to give even a sliver of a chance for Adam to suspect that the two identities were just two sides of the same coin. Dare he say he was even starting to enjoy fooling him?
sovereign_: You’ve had a long day. Why don’t you rest?
The tad bit of concern was hopefully enough for Adam to think little of the call that was sent his way. When he spoke at the first sign of Adam’s voice, his fingers lifted off the keyboard of his laptop to keep sovereign_ idle for the time being.
“Hello? I apologize for calling at such a late hour. This is Kim Woobin from KWB Corps. I’ve called to notify you that you’ve been hired. When’s the earliest you’ll be able to come in for a debriefing?”
Shifting around once again, he moves to rest on his stomach, his cheek pressed up on an outstretched arm as he stares at the screen. Thoughhis eyes weren’t focused so much on the words as just the screen, his thoughtsdrifting around once again. He wondered what it would be like if he did get thejob; actually having to work alongside that man seemed an impossible task themore he thought about it. He was sure he’d just be a nervous wreck the wholetime. What if he fucked up? He literally knew the languages backwards andforwards but who knows how he was going to react being around the boss all thetime. Maybe he should have applied for a lower position.
Groaning as anxiety fluttered through his chest once again,he forced himself to look at his messages, relaxing a little at the words. Heprobably was over-reacting. He just needed to calm down.
dulce: I hope so. I don’t think I’d be able to sleep if I didn’thear from it tonight dulce: Then again, I never sleep anyway, right?
Sighing, he glances towards the phone near by, wondering what it would be liketo actually have the call come in right now. It was silly to expect somethingso soon. Surely there was someone more qualified anyway. Right? There went thatrampant self doubt coursing through his system again.
dulce: I have to do a show tonight or else I would. dulce: After all, I still need to make money someho—
His phone ringing made him jump, his fingers frozen over thekeyboard as an unsent second message sat on the screen. For a few rings, hefound himself just staring at the phone, in shock and possibly in denial thatit was ringing at all. Of course, he had to quickly get over that; which endedin him nearly launching at the phone and answering in a voice that was perhapsa touch quicker and higher than he intended.
Wide eyes continued to stare straight forward as he listenedto the voice at the other end, his heart roaring immediately and beginning tothud loudly in his ears. He was hired? Really? It was amazing.
“Thank you, sir. I can come in as soon as you would like meto,” he answers, resisting the urge to type in the chat to give the news, evenas the phone still rested against his ear. He could barely believe it. He wasHIRED.
