Things had smoothed out since they first started sharing the barn, certainly, but there was still a grudge held by Lapis– she was sick of being treated like an OBJECT, sick of being nothing but a tool, and it stuck in her mind that Peridot had once been one of the gems to act like she was one. But… that was in the past. Things were better now.

She averted her gaze from the younger gem, as it was the only way to let it soften. She wanted to be friends with her roommate, she really did, but she was unable to get over the anger for one reason or another. All she could really do was try to act civil and hope that maybe someday her grudge would subside and let her open up.

“from what i’ve heard, some gems find it relaxing, because it shuts down the brain and helps you rest for several hours on end,” she responded with a shrug, folding her arms underneath her head in order to use them as a pillow.

“it can be kinda nice if you’re not prone to nightmares.”

Peridot sat herself in the grass a reasonable distance from Lapis, looking over the reclining gem as she tucked her knees to her chest. Now that the looming threat of the Earth splitting in half wasn’t a concern, she finally had some time to relax. This ‘sleep’ could actually be a feasible option of passing the time-- or yet another confounding Earth experiment to tuck under her belt.

Thinking back on her experiences with the drill, something occurred to Peridot. Her first instinct was to note it down, but she hadn’t exactly found a perfect replacement for her tape recorder yet.

“The organic life forms of this planet-- and to some extent, its non-organic inhabitants-- seem to have a strange preoccupation with doing nothing.”

Downtime was a foreign concept to her, to say the least. Productive Peridots were to always be doing something, micromanaging from one task to the next. What was a Peridot to do with downtime? That rigid Homeworld mold was no longer applicable to her, but her fingers itched at the thought in habit.

“Night mares?” She spaced out the word, as if dragging it out would suddenly reveal its meaning. Things were certainly different. This planet wasn’t quite home yet for Peridot or her roommate, and its customs were even stranger.

“Could you elaborate.”

She didn’t particularly enjoy Peridot’s company – the younger gem WAS the reason she’d been dragged back to Earth on the most hellish ship ride ever, and therefore it was indirectly her fault that she’d been fused into Malachite. But Steven’s trying to get her to forgive her had somewhat calmed her down to the point she no longer necessarily despised the technician, just… didn’t like her very much. And that was understandable, right?

Lapis rolled over so that she was on her opposite side and glared at Peridot, though the expression held less heat than it would have a little while previously.

“i don’t sleep. i was pretending to for steven’s sake.”

Peridot bristled as Lapis drew her gaze towards her, feeling smaller than she had when she first lost her limb enhancers. She probably would have felt more secure if Steven was around to smooth out this interaction for her, but the technician knew she couldn’t rely on him to fix all of her problems.

That didn’t necessarily mean that she didn’t want him to at the moment. It was a selfish thought, but the longer Lapis stared at her, the more she felt the pressure to say something. Unsure how to respond in a way that wouldn’t earn her a nice crack in her visor, Peridot fumbled for common ground.

“Sleeping-- ha!” A bout of nervous laughter. From what she could tell, whenever Peridot was around Lapis seemed to hate everything-- perhaps the best thing she could do was hate things with her, Peridot thought.

”Is there any reason beyond biological necessity to do that? What a waste of time!”

“huh? no! peridot, you watched the same episode for three days! i’ll never see you again if i give you the other episodes! besides, i don’t know where they are.

“besides, it’s not even that good! ‘crying breakfast friends’ is way better, and it just got off a hiatus, so they’re doing a special! there’s gonna be a ton of episodes! you should watch it with me! the other gems won’t watch it with me anymore; they think it’s weird. but i think you’d really like it!”

“What?! After all that, you don’t even have them? How could you do this to me?!

“You take that back. There’s no way your ‘Crying Breakfast Friends’ could ever compete with the creative genius and intricate plot structure that is Camp Pining Hearts.

That’s it-- why don’t you show me these ‘friends,’ if they’re so exceptional. We’ll see how they match up-- then you’ll realize what the superior image cube programming is!”

“i know you’re there.”

She wasn’t ASLEEP, though she was pretending to be. Steven had insisted that she take a ‘nap,’ despite her explaining that she always had nightmares and flashbacks whenever she was at the mercy of her subconscious. Peridot wasn’t all that difficult to detect, either; she may have been short, but the ocean gem had learned to memorize the footsteps of all of the gems.

“Gah--!”

Well. She’d been caught red handed. Green handed, rather, but Peridot was in no mood to mull over technicalities for once. It was difficult to reconcile everything that had happened between her and Lapis. An uncomfortable tension hung in the air because of it-- she had the gem imprisoned in a cell mere months ago, for crying out loud. There were things that needed to be discussed, but when push came to shove, Peridot wasn’t very well-suited for conflict. So, she did what any anxiety-riddled gem would do in the face of a former ‘informant’ and lied through her teeth.

“I... thought you were unconscious. Again.”

Peridot had originally planned to have them watch Camp Pining Hearts, but that plan had changed after the tape’s mysterious disappearance. In Peridot’s defeat, and at Amethyst’s suggestion, they would settle for “Little Butler” instead.

Whatever that was.

“Ahem.” The green gem cleared her throat, approaching Amethyst from behind. She had been maintaining a truce with the Crystal Gems for only a short period of time, and existing as a member for even less. She looked from her knees, still starless, to Amethyst’s own, something stirring in her chest before she brought it back down. Understandably, she’d been shaken up for the past few days.

“Amethyst. I’m… available for our review of your previously recorded entertainment.” She kicked restlessly at the ground, eyes trained on the gem before her as she awaited her response.

basically my brain wanted a scenario in which am and peri hang out to watch dumb shows together. peridot gets amethyst real deep into camp pining hearts and amethyst gets peridot hooked on lil’ butler. and then they get into shipping wars n stuff. y’know how it goes.
