The Brain Scoop: Periods + Fieldwork
Wherein I answer one of my FAQs: what are some practical ways scientists manage menstruation while conducting fieldwork, oftentimes in remote locations, and for long periods (PUN) of time?! The information in this video comes from the first-hand experience of researchers, hikers, campers, explorers, wanderlust seekers, and yes, yours truly. We learned the hard way, so you don’t have to.
Happy exploring!
This is fantastic - great information and inclusive language make us happy. Hikers, campers, and field researchers take note!

“It’s very…vaginal.”
Menstrual products have been getting a major makeover in recent years, with products becoming more eco-friendly, body positive, and more efficiently designed than ever before — and now, new company is hoping to make a big splash (pun intended) in helping you manage you period in these ways and more. Called Conscious Period, they're using a one-for-one model to provide access to menstrual products for every woman who needs them. "[We're] embarking on a mission to make healthy period products available to all women, with a 100 percent organic cotton tampon with plastic applicator and a dual giving model that provides organic cotton pads to women in need," a company representative tells Bustle in a statement. Their Indiegogo campaign launched today, and it's definitely a cause worth supporting.

Uterus Menstrual Cup Cozy Pattern
Due to popular demand :) , I have written up a pattern for the uterus-shaped cozy I crocheted for my Lady Cup. This pattern will make a pouch that will fit all brands and sizes of cups, both with and without stems. Here are some pictures of it completed (with large Lady Cup for comparison):
And here is the pattern: Yarn: Sugar ‘n Cream cotton in Rose Pink Hook: H Uterus: ch 2 Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd st from hook (6 sc) Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc) Round 3: *sc in first st, sc next 2 st together; repeat from * around (8 sc) Round 4: sc in each st around (8 sc) Round 5: sc in each st around (8 sc) Round 6: *sc in first st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around (12 sc) Round 7: sc in each st around (12 sc) Round 8: sc in each st around (12 sc) Round 9: *sc in first st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around (18 sc) Round 10: sc in each st around (18 sc) Round 11: sc in each st around (18 sc) Round 12: *sc in first 2 st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around (24 sc) Round 13: sc in each st around (24 sc) Round 14: sc in each st around (24 sc) Round 15: sc in each st around (24 sc) Round 16: sc in each st around, sl st into next st (24 sc) Round 17: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in next st & each st around (24 dc) Round 18: sl st into top of ch 3, ch 1, sc in same st as sl st, & sc in each st around. Sl st in 1st sc (24 sc). Finish off & weave in ends Fallopian tube (make 2): ch 50 sl st in 2nd st from hook sl st in next 2 st ch 4 sl st in 2nd st from hook sl st in next 2 st sl st into base of 1st “frond” ch 4 sl st in 2nd st from hook sl st into next 2 st sl st into any stitch at base of 1st 2 “fronds” Repeat until you have as many fronds as you want. Finish off, leaving a length of yarn about 1 ft long to sew onto other end of fallopian tube. Weave fallopian tube through Round 17 (dc round) After weaving, sew ends of tube together (end without “fronds” can be sewn on to resemble an additional “frond”). Make 2nd tube.
Weave tube through same stitches as first tube, making sure to start and end on opposite side of uterus as first tube. Sew ends of 2nd tube together. Weave in all yarn ends. If anyone has any questions, let me know!
Tips for eliminating period pain
Drink water! The less hydrated you are, the worse the pain will be.
Eat bananas! Cramping can be caused by a potassium deficiency and bananas have lots of potassium!
Avoid salt! Extra sodium can make your cramps worse.
Apply heat!! There are many ways to do this: hot water bottle, pour dry corn, beans, or rice into a sock and microwave it for 15 seconds, icy hot/bengay (use caution), or just a heating pad. This will relax the muscles in your abdomen and ease cramping.
Masturbate! Orgasms relax the muscles and ease cramping.
Exercise! Keeping your body moving is a great way to both get your mind off the pain and ease the pain.
If all else fails, grab a rusty knife and cut out your uterus. Fuck that bitch. All she wants to do is hurt you.
Straight men are fucking babies, pass it on.
Has anyone ever taken a pad or tampon out into the light of day only to have boys and grown men back five feet away? This shit is tip of the stigma iceberg that women experience for simply menstruating. How many of those products in the image can cause toxic shock or infections? How expensive are those products? How often do they need to be bought/replaced? These are real issues that affect our health, finances, and social/internalized perceptions of ourselves. Men absolutely REFUSE to acknowledge us for our biology when it’s not sexually appealing to them. They refuse to consider our mental and physiological health, and mock and silence us when we try to talk about it.

No pad, no tampon. Just panties. AND I BOUGHT THEM. You're welcome.
What it means if you experience lots of pooping, an alarming lack of pooping, or, hellishly, both.
Despite the fact that half the population gets their period, only five states consider tampons and other feminine hygiene products a "necessity."

#StateOfEmergency (8/18/15): In the last week and a half, at least six trans WOC have been found murdered. Of those six, five have been Black. We’re dealing with an epidemic. At least 17 trans persons have been killed so far this year, up from 12 for the entirety of 2014. What are we going to do? #staywoke #getactive
