While the live interaction shocked the audience and became a notorious piece of 1990s award show television, both actors later confirmed that the gag was entirely scripted and planned in advance to spice up the broadcast.

In a letter to Newsweek addressing the public's shock, Lovitz explained that they had rehearsed the bit together and he specifically asked Curtis to show him exactly how she wanted him to grab her. Curtis later stated that Lovitz executed the moment "with great skill".

Though the breast grope was heavily rehearsed and choreographed, the physical retaliation from Curtis -grabbing his groin in return - was a completely spontaneous, unscripted addition on her part.
