We need to view dark romance the same way we view the zombie apocalypse

If there's anything I've taken away from the zomst discourse, it's this.

Listen, we can all agree that the zombie apocalypse is an objectively bad thing that no one actually wants to happen. But no one can deny there’s a sense of catharsis in fantasizing about what you would do in a zombie apocalypse in order to survive. That’s the entire appeal. It’s a scenario that speaks to something internal within us as humans that isn’t driven by logic. So why can't we apply that same reasoning to romance?

Instead of arguing about whether certain scenes should be taken seriously as sa or whether a couple in fiction is unhealthy and toxic, we just need to acknowledge that in reality, this type of relationship isn't okay, but the fact that it appeals to us in story form is speaking to something deeper within us that has to do with people's intimate desire to feel wanted. So much of dark romance is exploring how people externalize the need to feel in control whether that's by exploiting or being exploited in a power dynamic. I feel like there's a much more fascinating discussion there rather than rehashing the same moral debate on what should be condoned in fiction.

I feel like there’s this weird cognitive dissonance happening in the West right now where the younger generations are more open-minded about sex than ever but at the same time there’s been a resurgence of purity culture especially as there’s been waning interest in fan service and sexually explicit scenes in media. It’s hard for me to articulate but it’s just something I think about especially whenever I come across posts criticizing East Asian media, particularly anime, for how fetishizing the content can get.

The West is so often perceived as open-minded and sexually liberating compared to other cultures and yet it has become a recent trend to commend media for having little to no fan service at all. This is opposed to countries like Japan, who are generally seen as more conservative or modest toward sex but at the same time is usually at the center of the discussion regarding criticism of “unnecessary” fanservice.

It seems to me, that the West only seems to tolerate displays of sex as long as it fits into a certain idea of how sex and sexuality should be presented. It has to be tasteful. Progressive. Follow the guidelines of healthy communication and establishing boundaries. It has to have a point. Basically, sex is okay, but perversion is not. And frankly, I find this to be disappointing.

We’re beginning to forget the nuances of depicting sexuality through media and turning into something black-and-white. Sex should be just as messy as people are but we’ve, for some reason, are making it out to be something that has to follow regulation, or otherwise it’s considered cheap and distasteful.
