My Principles of Interior Design
My attractive interior decoration not only serves me well but it also produces a certain feeling and mood, which reflects my personality. It is the attention that I give to these three important factors which guarantees that my decoration style is a success - function, personality and mood.
Before I start rearranging and painting my house, I make sure to spend time considering each family member's interests and how we go about our daily activities. I do some research by flicking through books and magazines for ideas and inspirations that might appeal to me. I gather items from my house, which make me feel good and study the items for color clues and themes that I am looking for in a home. From those themes, I might be able to create a well-decorated and well-planned house.
Decorating my home is more than just for appearance, it is the matter of creating a space that perfectly works for me and my family. Here is a list of how I did it, element by element:
Focal Point - Luckily for me, some of my rooms have their own focal points, which is the place where the eyes focus in on upon seeing the room. It may be the built-in bookcase, a window with an excellent view or a fireplace. If your room does not have any natural focal point, you may create it by placing a colorful rug on the floor or use a great piece of art to highlight the room.
Furniture - I determine if the chosen furniture perfectly fits the functions that I have planned for my space. If a piece of furniture is too small or too large for my room, I just trade it or totally get rid of it for another piece that may be more suitable for my space.
Lighting - I learned that the proper lighting must be appropriate to the functions of the specific rooms for more suitable visual appeal. Every task done inside a specific room will need either indirect lights or direct lights from lamps that may brighten the space for comfortable TV-watching or for conversations. Accent lighting such as track lighting, recessed spotlights or floor spots enhances the room, color and texture details. In addition, I always love the natural light that comes in my room every morning, so I choose my ready made curtains carefully with proper fabric and color to match my room theme.
