Small Fandom Summer 2026!
For the fourth year in a row now, it's time for Small Fandom Summer! Join me for Small Fandom Summer! It's real easy to play:
Make a fanwork for something that has fewer than 1000 English-language works on AO3
Post it to AO3
And then you've done it! You've made a thing and you've diversified the fandom ecosystem! You're basically a hero.
Q: The fandom I want to create for has more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but the specific pairing I want to write for has fewer than that. Does that count? A: Yes! Q: What if it has more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but, like, just barely? A: Okay! Q: What if it actually has a lot more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but it still feels small? A: Sure! Q: What if I don't want to post it to AO3? What if I don't even have an AO3 account? Can I post it somewhere else? A: Wherever! Q: What if-- A: Just do a thing, friend. Make a thing. Share the thing. This is not meant to be restrictive; this is meant to be inspirational. Create the fanworks you want to see in the world. Make a stranger happy by appealing to their niche interests. Bring joy.
And if you want to give yourself some silly little Steam-like achievement badges to commemorate your accomplishments, well, you're in luck! I've made a bunch of them right here! You can grab the ones that apply to your work and paste them wherever you like and feel good about what you've done. Here's a few of my favorites:
So you see? This is meant to be silly and fun.
There's nowhere to sign up. There's nothing to commit to. There's zero pressure. You just do it if you do it, and don't if you don't. But if you do want to play (yay!), tag your stuff with #small fandom summer so we can all swoop in and appreciate everyone else's efforts.
Here's to creativity!
Since some people have asked: There's now a Small Fandom Summer 2026 AO3 Collection! You can post your stuff right here! It's completely open and unmoderated, so if you think something goes there, well, go on and add it! Hopefully by the end of the summer, we'll have a nice little collection of stuff there.
And since some other people have asked: There's no start date for this, nor is this an end date. "Summer" in this context is an extremely arbitrary unit of measurement. I'm starting now because my personal summer runs from about mid-May to mid-August. Yours may vary.
I'm thrilled so many people have seemed excited about this! I hope it inspires the creation of a whole bunch of good stuff!
Happy Pride!
Every pride, you must reblog this. No exceptions
I love that four different people on my feed scheduled this joyous person to reblog by 8am on June 1. I look forward to seeing this a dozen more times today.
It's all right. I'm here. You're safe now. It's all right.
LOVE IN THE CLOUDS 入青云 dir. Peng Xue Jun, Zhi Zhu, 2025.
at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.
really difficult to convey to some people that you are absolutely allowed to dislike a character, but you should also pay attention to and understand why the POC character or woman is disproportionately targeted by fandom (for, often, innocuous reasons)
"It would have been easier if you'd just said yes."

I could never find the right way to tell you, have you noticed I've been gone?

Chapters: 3/7 Fandom: 莲花楼 | Mysterious Lotus Casebook (TV) Rating: Explicit Relationships: Di Feisheng/Fang Duobing Characters: Fang Duobing, Di Feisheng, Cameo Characters Additional Tags: Slow Burn, Horny Pining, Grief/Mourning, Li Lianhua Haunting the Narrative, DiFang Are The Main Event Though Summary:
A year after Li Lianhua vanishes, Fang Duobing and Di Feisheng part ways. Then, as the days grow darker across the empire, they begin again.
Excerpt:
"So are you," Fang Duobing says. "Open on your left, that is." Di Feisheng stops. Fang Duobing feels a single breath go in and out of him. Then, not even moving back, he laughs. A hitching, rasping sound, as if startled by its own existence. "Well played, young hero." Fang Duobing is the one with live steel held to Di Feisheng's body, barred only by his belt, and yet he shivers at the words. "You have two choices. Up into the heart for a quick kill, or straight into the guts for a drawn-out one." He should call an end. It's over, and he just acted on a stupid, brazen idea. Di Feisheng is not angry. His smile is scant and sharp and proud, and it spreads through Fang Duobing like a slow pouring of honey, like the aroma of osmanthus wine.
read chapter 3 on ao3.
or start from chapter 1.
Write that one-shot. Those 3 chapters will be the best 10 chapters you ever wrote
Anyway that’s why you wear wool and a life jacket babeeeyyyy
The important thing about wool is that it continues to keep you warm even when it’s soaking wet.
Other natural fibers don’t do this. In fact, quite the opposite. Campers and boaters are usually familiar with the phrase, “cotton kills.” If you’re wet in cotton or linen, your clothes actually sap heat from your body.
If you sink in a lake in late October like I did today, staying warm is important. I was rescued long before I would’ve actually died, but cold makes your muscles seize up, which isn’t good if you have to swim to land.
Which brings me around to life jackets. If the water’s cold enough, you may only have five-ten minutes until your muscles seize (today I probably had 40-60, more than enough time to get to land if I hadn’t been picked up), and you’ll drown.
In a life jacket, even in extremely cold water, you can float semi-conscious for perhaps another 30 minutes or so before you actually freeze to death, which is usually when someone rescues you.
What’s more, you probably know that moving around on land warms you up. Jumping jacks, jogging in place, etc.
In water, moving actually makes you colder. You need to stay still curled up in a ball, which you can only do in a life jacket.
In wool AND life jacket, you’re warm, and your head’s above water, which is pretty much your only and entire goal.
If you’re allergic to wool, synthetics are available specifically for this purpose. I know I always say natural fibers are the way to go, but when it comes to safety, wear what protects you!
Yep! A really simple “experiment” I learned as a kid and now use in my own courses is sticking your hand in ice water. Compare moving it around in the water to curling it up in a fist. The contrast is stark!
To increase your survival time in on cold water, you want to curl up! If you’re with others, you want to huddle!
Again, both are only possible when wearing a life jacket!
I know a lot of people are reblogging this for writing reference, but I like to believe that 7,000 people on this site were actually continually living in fear about this specific situation and that when the time comes, I’ve prepared them with what they need to know to survive.
Hi!
I was checking some of your fics in this link https:// www.trickster(.)org/speranza/stories(.)html and next to the titles there is a number like for example Eight Sessions (270K) -my favorite dS fic ever- and I was wondering what is the number? I thought it was the number of words but I didn't remember that fic being so long so I checked ao3 and yeah it says 34,432 words. Then, I checked other fics' word count in both pages and at least some of them don't match. What is that number then?
LOL - I love this question, even though it makes me feel OLD AS DIRT.
In the olden times of the dial up internet, the number you put next to a story was NOT the word count but the FILE SIZE - it was 240k in size, this is to say, a quarter of a mb--and this told the reader how long it would take to LOAD in your BROWSER. Now of course 240k is not very much, but understand me when I say that my first computer/word processor was an Atari 130, which had as its total system memory, 130k!! (Which was double my dad's computer, which was an Atari 65, which had--yes--65k total memory!)
Anyway Eight Sessions was written in--hm, looks it up, May 2002! Which means that only 20% of people had broadband internet at that time - so 80% would have had dialup and have to get the story through a modem. I posted the story to the F/K email list in parts, and then when it was only you wanted to make sure people knew how big it was so that they could anticipate the loading.
I didn't even have a LJ yet in May 2002--I caved and got one in December of 2002. Yikes!
This makes me angry in a way I thought only demented chocolatiers were capable of.
