July 12 & 13 teachers are striking in Cusco, Peru for higher wages blocking off streets with deterrents such as this and some fires. Protestors are mostly peaceful but if a car is found approaching one of their deterrents the protesters will surround the car to deter him or her from it's path.
The start of an Incan earth oven, a beautiful organic salad, Cusquena, and chickens. What more does one need in life!
my breakfast every morning plus a side of eggs with ham and cheese or sometimes yummy veggies!
corn and cheese from the side of the street on my way into the sacred valley. These corn kernels are so big I had to to twist each one off individually to eat it them with a piece of cheese!
Salchipapa’s from my host father’s brother’s restaurant called Friends! Their restaurant is about 2 months old now and it is a great place to get traditional dish called salchichas! You can get this dish with your choice of fried or scrambled eggs, sausage or beef! The sauces that traditionally go with this dish are ketchup & mayo. You may also wan to try the dish with spicy mustard or spicy yellow sauce, or a very interesting black olive sauce. I loovee black olives but this sauce wasn’t my favorite, ketchup and mayo are definitely preferred with this dish!
I absolutely love the Friends wall with friends spelled out in many different languages!
Pink potato soup
The bathroom at UCHU was covered in large tapestries on each side, which was very interesting so I just had to take a photo and share!
UCHU 5 Star Peruvian steakhouse was the perfect way to start my first night in Cusco while my family was celebrating a family member’s birthday! I got soup and ended up wishing I had gotten a steak instead! All of their steaks were cooked and brought out on hot stones which was very fascinating to see! The platters came with 4 different sauces some which were spicy and one similar to butter.
Riding around in the car with my host dad, brother, and sister on our way to lunch!
Entering San Jeronimo one of 5 districts of Cusco where the Mantay Women & Children’s Shelter is located
Before reaching my destination I had a long lay-over in Washington D.C. I spent time with my good friend, Jordyn that I hadn’t seen in about 7 years. She was kind enough to show me around part of D.C. National Mall. I didn’t have enough time to see the White house but I did get to see the Smithsonian Institute from the outside, George Washington Monument, Abraham Lincoln Memorial, WW2 memorials {absolutely awe striking, even without the fountain going} and the National Museum of Natural Science! I can’t wait to return to D.C. and finish exploring all of the historical sights this beautiful city has to offer!
The view of the mountains approaching Cusco Airport is spectactular! The plane was so close to the mountains coming in on landing that I felt as if I could reach out and touch them! If you follow me on snapchat you may have seen another beautiful photo I took from the plane where the higher mountain tops are covered in snow and surrounded by beautiful cumulonimbus clouds that can only be seen from 50k ft above the ground.
Not only was this my beautiful view from the sky but it is also my view from the top floor of the apartment complex I live in for the next five weeks! You may be surprise to find as I was that the mountain tops in Cusco are home to many here. Houses upon houses cover many mountain tops here in Cusco!
PS.
I will post a separate feed with all of my snapchat photos and videos for your viewing pleasure!
