PROLOGUE Pt 1: THE BEGINNING OF THE END
Daniel, woke up to the sound of birds and the dim light coming in from the room. “ugh, what happened last night” Dany said.
His clothes were wrinkly and dirty, the smell of vomit and alcohol that would wake up even the dead from their eternal sleep. He felt as if he was hit in the head, he could barely stand it he wanted to keep his eyes closed even the slight light of the day made him scream inside, nevertheless he quickly needed to get himself together. “ok, where am I?” he started to look for familiar sights. He couldn’t find any. A dog came in quickly to lick his face. Daniel shrugged him off, but recognized the dog. “This is Mathew’s dog so I must be at his apartment” he told himself with relief. He quickly recapitulated the events of last night.
The music, the people, the drinks, Kate..
He remember a few faint words before he blacked out “If you want me to stay, i’ll stay I will stop everything for you. You say the words” he remembers her expression like seeing someone in his last breaths. Then he remembered.
“This is my last day, this is the last day here” with disappointment as he looked at the date. “April 30th, yep my last day here” As he stood up to walk to the kitchen for some water, Kate came out of her room with her clothes from last night party.
“Morning Dany, last night was pretty wild” she said.
“ Yeah I barely remember anything after that last shot” Daniel replied with a little bit of shame.
“Dany I just want to say... I’m sorry that things didn’t worked out, I know this is your last day here and I wished it could have been different” Kate said.
With a headache so strong that he could barely process anything, he noticed that she did care about him in the end he understood her decision.
“It’s ok Kate, glad I could spend my last day with you, come here give me a hug”
As they reached each other for their goodbye hug, Kate said “I’m goanna go now, Mathew still sleeping, so please tell him I said bye”
With Kate gone, now he had time to finally get that water. As he walked to the kitchen and got a sip of water he remembered Kate last words “Mathew still sleeping, so please tell him I said bye”
Those words rang louder and louder like the sound of a blender turned on
Daniel walked to Kate’s room the door was closed, and he reached in the knob he told himself. “Please let it be messy, let it be messy”
He turned the knob and opened the door only to find the room organized and clean.
He then turned to Mathew room, the door was half open so he took a peek and there he saw the messiest of the room, the sheets were on the floor, condom wraps on the nightstand, he could barely believe it.
Daniel sat down on the table, he was devastated. “This is my last day here and the woman I loved, the one I went out with, the one the I put my hopes and dreams and she crushed it last night, had sex with my him while I was past out on the living room”
As he grabbed his things to get out of the room, Mathew came out of the room
“Hey dude, man that party last night uff,thanks for coming to my birthday also it was your goodbye party, hopefully you had some fun, I know your best friends were doing their own thing, but hopefully this distracted you for at least a while”
Daniel gained his teeth as he spoke he wanted to say it, he wanted to scream at him and yell and throw all his anger at him. As he was about too Mathew said”
“Let me give you a ride home, you are like 45 minutes away. its least I could do for your last day”
“Thanks” Daniel replied with a fake smile
Daniel and Mathew were on the drive home, Daniel was on the shotgun seat, his dirty clothes on a Walmart bag and a Calvin Klein white t-shirt that Mathew let him borrow it.
“ Keep the shirt Daniel, It fits you better than me:
“Sure, thanks” Daniel replied.
With the car as quiet as a tombstone, Mathew started some small talk
“You are doing the right thing Daniel, Sometimes we want something to work out so hard that we forget to look other possibilities, This is good for you, you can have a clean slate, be anyone you want to be, You’ll be like Don Drapper, I’m actually jealous, I’ll admit”
“You are an amazing bullshiter” Daniel replied sarcastically “No wonder you are in advertising”
“Creative” Mathew replied with a smirk on his face
“Mathew, did you had sex with Kate last night?” Daniel asked
Mathew quickly replied, “Of course not!, How could I have?, You like this girl and besides, when we were out for a smoke, you told made me promise because she was taken an interest on me, and you know me boy scout code of honor” with a smile
Daniel, saw that it was useless to fight him on his last day. As they arrived to Daniel apartment, Mathew went on to say his final goodbye. “Well man we knew each other for like 10 years it was fun!” with a hug he said “Until we meet again”
Daniel got out of the car. he waved off as the car rode into the distance, Daniel could only think of one word
It was his last 24 hours, this was the beginning of the end.
