There is a pretty excellent plot hole they could exploit to do just that if they had the balls for it.

In a nutshell- Snoke (allegedly created by or heavily controlled by palpatine which is a huge ass eyeroll in and of itself) *claims* the only reason Kylo and Rey could “link” was because of him. Snoke dies, and yet Kylo and Rey are still linked- so that was a lie. Palpatine tells Kylo that Rey is useless and must die- he actively advocates her death for over 3/4ths of the film. He only changes his tune when both Rey and Kylo are standing in front of him and about to kill him. And suddenly everything was actually done *for Rey’s sake* because she’s suddenly *his granddaughter*?? 🤣🤣🤣 As if that isn’t yet another lie in a last ditch effort to save his own life- use an orphan’s insecurity to claim to be their family, the one thing they’ve always wanted. Kylo already looked into Rey’s mind and KNOWS she was sold by abusive parents for drinking money- he SAW it. So any other narrative is fabricated. Absolutely the evil villain would lie about that to 1. Save himself, and 2. Get what he wants. Palpatine is also genuinely surprised to see that Rey and Kylo are a Dyad- this is new information to him. This suggests he was not aware of Snoke’s prior false claim of having “created” this link, for starters, and also heavily suggests that despite having been “the voice that was always inside your head” he actually just has very surface information about both of them and has inferred (wrongly) most of it. Which ALSO implies that his claim to have been behind snoke the whole time etc etc is also a lie and is just his emotional chesspiece to use against Kylo like his claim to be rey’s grandpappy is against her.

Basically, this whole setup is so badly written and so shoe-horned in and contradicts so much of the setup and backstory of the previous two films (there is a whole section of a book called “before the awakening” that goes through poe’s backstory and he was never ever a drug runner??? How are they suddenly going to make him a drug runner?? When??? Where??? We’ve had his whole backstory from day one???? 🤣), that the holes TROS makes are so wide we can easily poke our fingers through them and contradict *them* in turn. TROS is so easy to retcon on an official canon level that I could do it in my fucking sleep.

I’m writing today and thinking about Rey. Rey is so closed-off, she’s at most only vaguely hinted at her unhappy back story to BB-8, an unthreatening little egg who for all intents and purposes doesn’t talk back. She’s intensely private, independent and self-protective - “that’s none of your business.”

To get this character to open up, the writers had to introduce mind-reading magic, almost that same trick where a character is bespelled to tell the truth against their will so their back story finally gets shared. Otherwise, I don’t think anyone could have gotten through to her, and she would have always been like “oh I’m fine, everything’s ok, im good, let’s go save the day.”

And then you think about how she would open up to no one, but as soon as she had no choice about sharing her whole hidden mind and feelings and past with Ben, she jumped in with both feet. She tried to hide herself, but when she was revealed, she returned to him voluntarily to reveal herself even more, more and more. “I’m not giving you anything” to -> “I’ve never felt so alone.”

She wanted and needed to be known just as much as he did. And there’s something great about that connection being unwanted and accidental at first, but then when they saw how invigorating and cathartic it is to be known in their loneliness, they both embraced it as a gift.

War as a moral metaphor is limited, limiting, and dangerous. By reducing the choices of action to “a war against” whatever-it-is, you divide the world into Me or Us (good) and Them or It (bad) and reduce the ethical complexity and moral richness of our life to Yes/No, On/Off. This is puerile, misleading, and degrading. In stories, it evades any solution but violence and offers the reader mere infantile reassurance. All too often the heroes of such fantasies behave exactly as the villains do, acting with mindless violence, but the hero is on the “right” side and therefore will win. Right makes might.

God the idea to attribute the stormtroopers breaking their conditioning to just “a feeling...the force” while literally saying oh it wasn’t a decision was so fucking stupid and cheapens the immense courage it took for Finn to overcome his fear.

It is also so desperately, insanely sad that the story of FN-2187 claiming his own humanity never caused anyone in the universe to consider the likelihood of more Stormtroopers who’d willingly turn away if they got the chance.

How many more would-be Finns & Jannahs did the “Good Guys” blow up in the end? How is that “peace”?

TROS reaction [spoilers]

I don’t like being all “in these divisive times” or whatever about a Star Wars movie, but probably one of the most harmful messages in The Rise of Skywalker is “if you are the Good Guys, it is good & right for you to do everything you can to team up and DESTROY the Bad Guys”. As if the only path to “peace” is to kill people who are your enemies. There is no healing in that? There’s no room for growth for anyone, it’s just DOUBLE DOWN IN YOUR CONVICTIONS, USE VIOLENCE IF NECESSARY, and only *then* all will be right with the world. We see that in politics, where everyone postures themselves as the Pure and Righteous Ones and nobody reflects on the darkness and selfishness and fear IN OURSELVES that cause us to hurt one another. It’s a really bleak message!

It hurts that we see one abused child turn away from his life of hurt & loneliness & vengeance, and in the end he doesn’t get to grow or restore light to those he has hurt. He just dies. His father and uncle and mother all died for HIM, to bring HIM home, back to wholeness & love & light, and he doesn’t get a chance to actually live in that peace and belonging he’d been longing for. It’s a flat message steeped in condemnation and hopelessness, and I’m very upset about it.
