Grandmaster Melle Mel, “Jesse.” The single greatest campaign song in the entire history of presidential elections.

“He started on the bottom, now he’s on the top.” The song brings back the incredible pride that blacks (and lefties like me) felt when Jesse Jackson flew to Syria at the beginning of the 1984 campaign and won the release of a downed Navy pilot, Lt. Robert O. Goodman, who had been shot down over Lebanon:

Before he left, he called the President’s home And Reagan didn’t even answer the phone But I tell you one thing that’s a natural fact You can bet he called Jesse when Jesse got back

And indeed, Jackson was called to the White House for a ceremony welcoming the freed pilot, and went on to score surprisingly well in the early primaries, outlasting leading candidates like John Glenn who had to drop out, becoming a force to be reckoned with and taking his campaign all the way to the national convention in San Francisco. I saw him speak at the Berkeley Community Theater before the California primary. He said: “If I had Mondale’s money, he couldn’t compete. And if Mondale had my money, he couldn’t compete.”

I love how Melle Mel says, so slyly, “For fast and friendly service… there’s no need to be nervous!”
