Peter was definitely looking forward to the picnic that he and Mary had planned. It had been a while since the two of them had had any quality time, though that was completely the Gryffindor's fault. He had a tendency to get caught up whatever petty things occupied his attention, and all excuses aside, Mary made him incredibly nervous. A good sort of nervous, however it was nervous none the less. It wasn't like he was avoiding her, but what else could he call it? The seventh year didn't have a clue what he was doing. The rational approach would be to take action and have some initiative and not be such a damn coward all the time. However, he was much too shy and insecure for that, instead settling for rambling and letting her call all of the shots.

Not that they were bad shots. Their meeting had went well, despite Peter being a bumbling awkward mess and making a fool out of himself like usual. Somehow, some way, she seemed to be okay with that, for which he was forever grateful. Mary was okay with him, stuttering rambles and all. Thinking about it made him smile; it was still hard to believe that she liked him, fancied him the way he did her. It was one of the few things keeping his spirits up amongst all the chaos that had been happening around the castle as of late.

He simply tried to keep out of all that. Where his mates were rearing and ready to get revenge for the Abbott girl's attack, Peter was hesitant and well... afraid. His fear was practically paralyzing, and almost constant. Fearing about what people would think of him, fear of particularly skilled duelists that wouldn't hesitate to ruin him if they had the chance, fear of the bigger things at stake. Being around such strong individuals like James, Sirius, and Remus, as well as Mary's seemingly constant optimism was what kept him from completely losing it. He chose to focus his thoughts on the positive aspects as he walked across the grounds. Mary was almost always upbeat, even though she had just as much of a reason to worry as he did, if not more. Peter attempted to close his ears to the darker news that spread around Hogwarts, but he had heard the whispers about what happened with Mulciber. It made him a little sick, to be honest. How anyone could hurt Mary was beyond him, the thought almost brought up some anger. If there was anyone worth fighting for, it was her.

Snapping out of those thoughts as he approached the shores of the Lake, Peter spotted the Hufflepuff girl quite easily and quickened his pace until he reached her. "Hey," he greeted, putting a hand up to give her a small wave. Then came the usual cycle of becoming tongue tied followed by rambling about anything that came to mind. "You look nice," Pete added with a smile, though he quickly wished he would have given her a better compliment rather than simply 'nice'. "Ready for this picnic?" he questioned, a grin spreading across his face. Dumb question, Pettigrew, of course she is. That was whole point. Pull yourself together. Whatever internal pep talk the Gryffindor had given himself didn't seem to work much, because he was still left grinning like an idiot and freezing up when it came to conversation.
