Job #100: How It All Happened
Friends have started to ask me how this whole thing happened regarding my segments on the Today Show and the New Year’s Eve Show on NBC. Below I’m going to recount the story. If you’re looking for general answers about my project, visit the FAQs page. And although I’d enjoy telling you all this story individually, there just isn’t enough time in the world for that. So here it goes:
A week before Christmas, I got an email from a friend at NBC’s Today Show saying she pitched my idea, and they loved it! She’d known about my project since its inception in December 2011, and wanted to wait til the right time to pitch it.
When she contacted me the next day asking if I’d be available for an interview on Wednesday the 26th, I was speechless for three minutes! My roommate kept asking me what was wrong.
That Friday, the producer called me and we talked for a half our about the project, and went over call times and the car service. I told some family and friends the news, but asked them not to post on social media til Monday the 24th so the excitement would still be fresh for the 26th.

What's the point?
Did you guys know Grace Helbig is in a new commercial for Lowe’s?
I legitimately had to rub my eyes to make sure my mind wasn't playing tricks on me.
If you saw this post about a week ago, you know that I’ve just started a 12 month journey to become a life coach. I’m SO excited to be doing this work, as I can already see my own approach to life changing for the better. No, not for the better, for the AMAZING.
After just one training...

My Sister Paid Progressive Insurance to Defend Her Killer In Court
I’ve been sending out some impertinent tweets about Progressive Insurance lately, but I haven’t explained how they pissed me off. So I will do that here as succinctly as possible. There’s a general understanding that says, “insurance companies— oh they’re awful,” but since Progressive turned their shit hose on my late sister and my parents, I’ve learned some things that really surprised me.
I’ll try to cleave to the facts. On June 19, 2010, my sister was driving in Baltimore when her car was struck by another car and she was killed. The other driver had run a red light and hit my sister as she crossed the intersection on the green light.

I'm thinking of changing my name to Dan Orlovsky. Or at least hiring his agent.
Seriously. What the fuck? I've essentially been unemployed for 2 1/2 years. (And no, shit part-time jobs that make me lose money just by doing them do not count in my book.) But this fucking guy. We, as a people, are clearly doing something wrong. He'd been riding the bench for the Lions for a couple of years until Jeff Garcia went down with an injury. So now, the backup kid that had tons of school records at...uuhhh...UCONN *snicker* gets the starting gig! Want to guess what year he got the job? 2008. Yep, that would be the year that the Lions lost ALL OF THEIR GAMES. Now take a look at this shit: Orlovsky Fail No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you. He ran out of the back of his OWN END ZONE. If that doesn't scream ineptitude, I don't know what does. That game would be one of ten that he started that season, meaning that he was SO MEDIOCRE that he didn't start all their games that season. So what happened to him after that? Why, the Texans signed him for a 3-year, $9 million contract! He then proceeds to ride the bench, made one start, gets cut after two years of bench warming, then heads to Indianapolis to be part of the 2011 Quarterback Carousel. So after that, where is he now? Signed by the Buccaneers for a 2 year, $2.5 million contract. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU I'm at a loss for words here. How does someone parlay doing nothing and magically turn that into $2.5 million? That's why there can't be a just and loving god in this world; if there were, Dan Fucking Orlovsky wouldn't get to make a lot of money by being completely inept.
August 1st...and I've got nothing.
So much for that “YES,” kids.
It’s kind of like that Yosemite Sam/Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs keeps saying, “I dare you to cross THIS line!” until Sam falls off of a cliff.
Guess who gets to play Yosemite Sam?
I was all ready. I really was. So much so, that I was willing to dig myself a much bigger hole that I couldn’t crawl out of, because I didn’t care. That’s how badly I wanted this, for the first time ever.
And now it’s not gonna happen. And I need…I don’t know…SOMEONE. ANYONE. Just as long as I can get something off of my chest, preferably not in blog post format.
I do this every time something really amazing comes along in my life. I think “HEY I WANNA GO DO THAT” and I’ll inevitably hit a snag. I then get extremely frustrated, angry, and push people away, and I’m back at square one again.
I’ve been giving the “I don’t know” answers a lot lately, and it really pisses me off that I can never figure out a plan and that I have to have my hand held like an asshole. How do I stop thinking that way?
I can’t just do the opposite. Doing the opposite yields the exact same results as my normal mode, which is to do nothing. I wish I knew how to do something, or at least FEEL like I’m doing something.
I think that’s what hurts most of all. I always get in my own way and I haven’t the slightest clue as to ask for help. I always feel like I’m doing everything by myself, and support is just a theory.
I’m sure there’s more in my head. I don’t know how to get it all out though. And this time, I don’t know who to turn to.
I’m sorry about all of this. Today was a shit day and I can’t afford to do anything at all. I guess that’s it for now.
The show is over, say goodbye.
DERP inspiration here and hereÂ
YES.
I'm doing it. After a month of ups and downs, failures that really were successes, a bunch of thinking, people trying to drag me down, an observation this weekend, and finally Michelle's live show last night, something happened. I HAD A CLUNK. It had been about a month since I first had that clunk, but I still had my foot out the door. The reason? A money issue, just like always. Then I participated in Michelle's live show. (By the way, you should too. It's a lot of fun.) She had Laura and Heather there, two life coaches that I'd met a couple of times. (Awesome people as well, by the way.)
My question that I asked was this: "How do you go about achieving things that are seemingly impossible and out of your comfort zone?"Â (It's question 32, by the way, just in case you wanted to skip ahead. Just look for the WCW logo.) Her answer was something I'd gone back to many times last night and today...and I didn't think of it as an answer at all. I took it as a challenge. Am I willing to play a big game? Do I want to grow and expand and challenge myself consistently? Am I willing to be out of my comfort zone constantly and do new things? I am. I think I just needed to hear it. I'm totally in, and I do not care about the consequences. Bring them ON. I am up for it and ready to change into something that had always been there, but I'd forgotten that along the way, even over the course of the month. AND, most importantly, I want to show others that they can too. Especially if I can do it. August 18. Be ready. I am now. It's not a "Yes, but..." anymore. IT'S A FUCKING YES. YES. YES. YES. YES. YES. YES.Â
