(I saw a debate about whether or not it was okay for people to share fic links around without asking the authors first, since some authors may not be comfortable with the links to their fics being shared around on twitter or tumblr. so I thought this post could be a blanket permission for authors who were okay with the links to their fics being shared around!)
Days where you stay up and wake up far too late, moving and feeling like molasses; heavy, sticky, slow. Days where your skin feels tight, when your teeth feel like theyโre humming along with some tune theyโve only shared with your skull and finger-bones. Days where youโre hitting the corner of every table and chair and you honestly wouldnโt be surprised if some freak had broken into your house just to shift your furniture a few millimeters to get in your way.
Itโs just one of those days; all about the โhe saidโ โshe saidโ bullshit - itโs like Fred Durst could accompany your inner monologue, your own little โhey!โ โlook!โ โlisten!โ pixie to get you started on your adventure. How delightful!
Youโre not so sure you want to go on an adventure that starts with a page of demented drawings left at your doorstep, though.ย

Eh, well, maybe you do, you canโt really lie to yourself. Itโs not like you have anything better to do, anyways.ย
You reach down to pick up the paper; itโs slightly crumpled, thereโs a small chunk torn out of the top, and the charcoal from the drawings transferred to your thumb like the dark smudge of a smokey-eye. It was a depiction of what looked like a very tall man standing among crudely scribbled trees - at least you assumed they were trees - along with several circles crossed out by an โxโ, and words across the top that read โALWAYS WATCHES, NO EYESโ. Huh. Whoever drew this was quite heavy-handed, reminding you of a toddler, almost.
You snorted - the idea of some bumbling little snot-nosed goober scratching this out and leaving it at your door was pretty funny, you had to admit.ย
The gaunt and looming figure would make more sense too if it were drawn by a toddler. Nearly every drawing of an adult youโve seen from a child has been way too lanky and way too creepy, so tall-dark-and-handsome here would fit the bill just fine. However, the writing at the top wouldnโt make much sense if this were made by someone who couldnโt even read. A slightly older child, maybe?ย
Taking another step further out your front door, you looked both ways down your street, almost expecting to see some shady guy in a trenchcoat hiding in the shadows or something. Maybe he would be the tall man from the drawing, who knows? But, everything seemed normal; the neighborhood untouched, and just as boring as ever. Yippee.
The slight ringing in your ears was new, though.
You looked back down at the paper in your hand, the tall faceless man staring- wellโฆ sure, staring back up at you. Youโd question his lack of features, but since youโd already chalked this up to a childโs drawing, it was easier to overlook the details. Ah, wait a minuteโฆย
โAlways watches, no eyes,โ you muttered as you read the words at the top of the page again, re-evaluating your thoughts here. So, this guy was faceless on purpose, you could deduce that much. But why โwatchesโ? Who does he watch? Why is he watching? What the fuck even IS this?ย
You took one last glance around the street - still empty and boring - before stepping back inside your house. While slowly drawing your door to a close, that ringing in your ears slowly faded down to silence, leaving behind a tension behind your eyes and a tug in your mind towards something you hadnโt even thought about yet.
Strange.ย
You set the page down on your coffee table with a sigh while passing through the living room; it was probably getting close to your shift, so youโd have to scratch your head about this later. To be fair, youโd much rather be wondering about some drawing, but corporate America waits for no one - not even girls who get mysterious artwork thrown at them like some kind of sign.ย
A sign for what?

Brian and Tim turned their heads towards Toby upon hearing his outburst, looking to the tree he stood beside.ย
โWhat is it now?โ Tim grumbled with a raised brow, tone indicating he was already over it - whatever โitโ even was.
โThe page over here is missing - again,โ Toby replied, head jerked to the side while he spoke with frustration. Pinned to the tree was only a torn scrap of what used to be a full piece of paper.
Tim sighed, reaching up to pinch the bridge of the nose on his mask out of habit, and he shook his head. Fuckinโ great. This is probably the third time within the past couple of days that this particular page has been taken. Thatโs what the pages were for, obviously - a kind of lure to get wanderers stuck and crawling further and further into His domain - but when only one of them had been taken this frequently? Shit was weird.ย
Clearly, something was happening, but if Tim refused to acknowledge it then maybe it wouldnโt get the chance to become his problem.
โItโs fine,โ he eventually exhaled, โweโll just find whatever trespassers snatched it this time and-โ
โB-But thatโs just the thing!โ Toby interrupted, before gesturing to the dense forest around them by throwing his arms wide open. โThere arenโt any trespassers!โ
Tim looked at him like he was a moron - a look he received often.
โLook,โ he began, โIโm tellinโ you, n-no oneโs been here! Not for a few d-days, at least.โ The grass and bushes and other various plants around them appeared relatively untouched by human presence. The only sign anyone had been there at all was them being there now.
โHeโs right,โ Brian added simply, standing straight with his arms folded across his chest; casual enough, but tense.ย
Toby was easier to doubt, but Brian being so sure as well? Tim sighed once again, more frustrated - not to mention more defeated - than before. Now whateverโs going on is definitely his problem.ย
โWell, thatโs pleasant,โ he muttered, before huffing and running a hand through his dark disheveled hair. โWhat the fuck are we supposed to do about it?โ
Toby merely shrugged, one of his shoulders jumping a little higher while he did so, and Brian said nothing more.ย
Cool. How helpful.ย
After a moment of contemplative silence, Tim sighed yet again, shaking his head. โIโm gonna look around a little,โ he announced, before turning on his heel and walking away through the foliage.ย
โI t-told you, thereโs no one-!โย
โLet it be,โ Brian said, interrupting Toby with a large gloved hand on his shoulder. โIโm sure he knows that there ainโt much to find. Even if he doesnโt, though, heโll figure it out when he eventually stomps the grass into the dirt while walkinโ in circles for nothing.โ
โI guess so,โ Toby replied, his shoulders jolting briefly, but the weight of Brianโs hand was grounding and helped keep him still. Several seconds of silence passed between the two while they watched Tim disappear into the trees, before Toby spoke up again. โThink we should make a new one?โ He jabbed a thumb towards the tree that was now pageless.ย
Brian huffed through his nose, amused, a small grin spreading across his face behind the mask he wore. โWith what?โ he questioned, humouring the situation. โYou got a notepad on ya, kid?โ
Toby groaned, leaning into Brian to shove him with his shoulder. โCome on man, whatโd I-I say about callinโ me a k-kid? Iโm like twenty-s-something!โ
โTwenty-somethin?โ Brian repeated through a chuckle. โIโll stop callinโ you โkidโ once you can figure out how old you are.โ
โMan, f-fuck you.โ
โNo-can-do, buddy - you donโt even know how old you are, remember? I ainโt too interested in โcatchinโ a caseโ or whatever.โ

Standing back home in your living room, you stretched with a groan, hearing and feeling several pops from your back. Ah, a joy among many of being a wage-slave: complimentary back pain! Only one of your gifts of the day!

You looked over at your coffee table, the paper still laying there from when you set it down earlier in the day. Now that you were off work, you could sit down on your couch to stare at it and ponder it properly. Deciding to do just that - plopping on the couch and grabbing the page - you began to look it over again, eager to scan any details your mind mightโve forgotten while you were gone.ย
It was certainly strange, the level of attention this drawing was taking from you. You havenโt focused this much on something in a long time, and youโre not even sure youโd be able to remember when the last time was. It was only a piece of paper with some scribbles, probably a childโs drawingโฆ but it was just such a mystery! A puzzle to be solved, a question that needed answered! Well, several questions, all packed together in a trash compactor and dumped directly at your door, but still.ย
The dark charcoal lines on the page began to grow a bit blurry as you stared, and you took a second to squeeze your eyes shut. There was that ringing again. You opened your eyes, blinked, and took a breath. After setting the page back down on the table, you reached to apply pressure to your temples with the heels of your palms; your head was spinning.ย
Sure, this could just be some coincidence - the wind blowing some strange kidโs drawing to you by happenstance; maybe a kid putting it on your doorstep themselves, trying to freak out the neighbors - but it felt like it was more than that; It had to be more than that!ย
You at least knew you wanted it to be more than that.ย
Being an adult means a lot of things. Youโve gotten older, youโve grown wiser, youโve become bigger and stronger; the most important thing thatโs developed alongside you, however, is your sense of self. No matter how much your life has beaten you down, there are still parts of yourself that youโve held on tightly to. Your whimsy, your ambition, your hopes and desires, your passion - absolutely monumental parts of what makes life worth living.ย
And currently, all of that was focused on and activated by one piece of paper with charcoal scribbles. The paper sitting on your coffee table in front of you, taunting you with a story and a mystery just out of reach. The paper that, unbeknownst to you, was about to flip your life around within the span of a single evening.

Today, being an adult means taking up the main character mantle and doing something completely out of pocket to further your story. Huzzah!
You pushed yourself off the couch, snatched the paper, and went right for your bedroom. A change of clothes, a backpack with a few necessities, the page folded and tucked into a pocket of said backpack, and you were ready to go!ย
Where you were going to go was one of the biggest questions, though.ย
Well, I guess Iโll just start with leaving the house.
You pocketed your phone, tied your shoes, threw a jacket on, and walked right out the front door. After closing it behind you, you stopped on the doorstep to look around. The sun was setting over a moderately clear sky, there was a pleasant breeze, and then there was you; backpack slung over your shoulders, looking like a college kid with too much light in their eyes, or maybe even an eager boyscout. Eager, antsy, you.ย ย
Taking a deep breath, you took a step forward that led you off your doorstep, before heading out into the scenic street.ย
Would you even find anything relating to this paper? Would you actually get the answers to something for once? Or would you just be some dork sniffing around for a side-quest after seeing something vaguely spooky?ย
Honestly, you figured itโd be the latter, but whereโs the harm in that?ย
The thought brought you back to when you were younger, walking around the park with the Skyrim map from its disk case, pretending you were a mage on an adventure. Gaudy plastic accessories, a stick just perfect for a magic wand, and a towel-cape tied around your neck? Absolutely unstoppable. If only you had your โgearโ with you now - that โsilverโ necklace and tiara with the chunky red โjewelsโ within would definitely add to the ambience.ย
โOne of those daysโ can mean anything, really, if you put your mind to it; it doesnโt have to be about the โhe said โshe saidโ bullshit. Sometimes, it can be about a piece of paper and potential fantastical delusion.ย
You smiled to yourself as you got an idea of where you were going first.ย
Parks were prime territory for adventure when you were a child, so why wouldnโt they be now? After all, youโve only just moved here a few months ago!ย
hello! i wanted to write a couple of things down to try and explain my thoughts here ^^; so first of all, i know the title has 'princess' in it and it's for a fem aligned reader, but really all that makes the reader fem is she/her pronouns and potential physical descriptors. i'm just used to writing she/her pronouns n such, itโs what im most comfy with, but aside from that the story isn't like crazy exclusive. i tend to base my reader-insert y/ns off of myself in a way so i apologize if it feels like the reader has a personality too specific! also i just based the title after the princess and the pauper cuz i thought it was funny lol. anyways uh happy reading!

I'd format this in a more appealing way but im exhausted rn lmao and just kinda wanna get my thoughts out somewhere, so I figured why not typity-type on my phone while practically falling asleep for strangers on the internet to see?
anyways, here we go
all of my pets and family members seem to die in the winter
they always pass when it's cold, when the days are short and everyone's miserable, and the ground is hard and it's tough to bury anything
we've always had lots of pets throughout the years, but sadly one of the drawbacks to having so many fuzzy members of the family is that they almost always pass way before you do. I never regret any of the pets we've had, the love is always worth it, but the pain is real and of course it hurts
and when they go in the winter, when things already seem so bleak and they leave us, it can just be so hard to handle. everyone has their own reasons for it, but winters are always described as "unforgiving". spiritually, winter and this time of year can symbolize death and decay, loss and pain and suffering and wilting, fading away
but then, spring arrives. the snow slowly melts, the days gradually get warmer, and those dead flowers give nutrients to the next blooms that begin to sprout from the dirt
in a way, it feels like how the pain does when I experience these losses
the sadness melts away slowly like snow, and it still gets cold, but the days are getting longer and the colorful specks of life are finally starting to emerge from the clouds of grey
like the seasons, emotions will cycle, and much like winter, that sadness will never leave. it will be experienced again
but the sun will rise, the ground will warm, and we will rise again like the new flowers, and there will be time for snow in the future
winters are hard for me. seasonal depression is a factor, of course, but sometimes all i can think about during these cold weeks is the pain, all of those I've loved and lost
then spring comes, the rising sun will dry the tears on my face, and I'll smile when I see the flowers grow and the ice drip from the pine trees
life goes on, the earth continues to turn, and although our pain is very real and intense, it is never eternal
uhh, to quote the great Lightning McQueen:
"Life's a beach, and then you drive."
