It Was a Translation, Not a Confession (petty imagines #1)
this one’s for all the bilingual/polyglot bitchez out there:
[Y/N is good friends with him, but he’s crushing, hard. So is she]
You’re working on your laptop with him sitting right beside you. He’s listening to music through his headphones. There’s a comfortable quiet between the two of you. Then, all of a sudden, he lifts up one of the earpieces and turns to you.
“What does [______] mean?” He asks curiously.
You finish typing something out and glance up at him as you respond. “I love you,” you tell him, without much thought behind your words.
If it was... :
Sans: “uhh... right. that’s--” He seems to want to look anywhere but you. “i’ll uh. i’ll just use google next time. you--don’t wanna distract you from work,” he chuckles nervously.
“Hey! I’m a way better translator than google, are you kidding me?”
“yeah no, you’re pretty--pretty handy! but i got it.” The more he explains himself, the less sense he makes, and the more strained his attempts get. Now that the topic’s come up, though... Unfortunately, the way you just casually toss up a date suggestion for the both of you seems to have broken him entirely. The chronically unflappable skeleton is at a loss: a stunned, blue-flushed, blank slate. A glitch in the matrix. This is a win, right...?
There’s a lot of flustered rambling you can’t bear to interrupt, despite your face growing exponentially hotter. After much external monologuing, he eventually comes to the very solid conclusion that that it is extremely flattering to be the object of your affections and that okay, potentially, possibly, yes he does seem to have the most curiously strong affection for you as well, and maybe, no, surely, the only solution to all of this chaos is to fix it by promptly going on a date. After your work, of course. You don’t even bother correcting him. The date goes beautifully.
Red: “...and what does [___] mean?”
You hum thoughtfully, looking back up at him again to answer. “Basically, let’s fu--”
You cut yourself off before you can finish the accidental proposition, blushing hard. “I’m going to punch you.”
“‘s that what it means? huh. what were ya gonna say b‘fore that, though?”
Edge: “.......H-HMPH. WELL. IT’S ABOUT TIME YOU REALIZED.”
“Wait, what--”
“I FORGIVE YOU FOR TAKING SO LONG. I SUPPOSE WE CAN’T ALWAYS BE IN TUNE WITH OUR EMOTIONS. I... I AM VERY FOND OF YOUR COMPANY AS WELL. MORE THAN MOST.”
You flush a deep red as Edge pats your head with affectionate stiffness. That’s not a misunderstanding you even want fixed, at this point. Continuing work has never been more difficult.
Blue: “[_____________],” he responds, with perfect pronunciation. You gape at him. Was he always.... Fluent? Either way, you definitely can’t go back to work, not after you’ve just been enthusiastically confessed to like it’s any other day. Blue seems content to flip his headphones back on and gives you such a beaming smile that you can’t help but splutter at the audacity. You can’t just--What just happened?
Stretch: “and with you as well... comrade.”
You blink at him. He blinks at you. A lot of blinking ensues. Something about the distinctly chill nature of the skeleton is off this time, disturbed like a ripple in a pond. Work’s hard to focus on when you feel like he keeps glancing over. You can’t catch him in the act, though, so...
Slate: “......thanks.” He seems satisfied. You go back to work until he asks again. He’s forgotten what it means--you should probably remind him a few more times. And then a few more times after that, too.
Basil: “I LOVE YOU TOO!”
“What? No, I--No--” This panicked backtracking is really not helping your case.
“NO..?” Oh my god. You can’t just leave him looking at you like a kicked puppy.
“I mean--yes!!! Yes, I.. I love you.”
And that’s that. Leave it to Basil to melt through your defenses with pure affection.
Wild: “NO!”
You jerk back from your laptop, startled. “What the fuck, Wild?”
The misunderstandings get worse from there. It’s really only resolved when he sets up his perfect confession to you later to make up for the ill-timed, inadvertent one. Whew! His plans were nearly ruined. Good fast thinking.
Cash: “we haven’t even had our first date yet.”
“Har har, very funny,” you retort, rolling your eyes.
“so this friday, then.”
???
“our first date. grillby’s. i’ll pick you up at 4.”

“fine, fine, you’re really pullin’ my femur here, but... it’s on me.”
“I, I, that, okay, but--Cash, what th--”
“perfect. don’t stay up too late thinking of me, babe.”

‘Living in a storybook’ by ‘ExultantIcarus’ is one Ive read more than once. It was last updated last year on October 11th, though, so I’m not sure if it’s still ongoing.

Woah!!! Thank you so much for deciding to ask! I didn't realize people were still reading 'Home', to be honest. Regardless, it's definitely ongoing because I still have so much I want to write for it!! The progress, like 'Best Served Cold', might be quite slow because of other stuff I'm going through, but both of the works are absolutely not going to be dropped. :-)
