SAINT CASTILLO  ( laith ashley, 32, trans man, he/him ) : vivacious but scatterbrained local bartender and performer — singer and sometimes drag — at ‘the royal.’ just don’t expect him to get your drink right. lover of all things disco and electronic music. has worn go-go boots to interviews before. lots of loud prints and colors combined with leather accents. takes just about anyone under their shoulder,and won’t take self deprecation. PIPER “PIP” MEDINA ( inde navarrette, 24, questioning, she/her ) : perceptive but taciturn ranch hand at her family’s local pig farm. youngest, and only, daughter of five kids to a single father where it was all about hard work and tough love. had dreams of moving away and going to college, but well... she had no idea what she was ‘good’ at other than tending to the pigs, so she’s here. soft-spoken and sensitive, often reading or dreaming about running away in her oversized handy-me-down clothes, pip’s known as a bit ‘awkward’ to most. [ full introduction/biography here ]

CHARLES “CHUCK” HIRANO ( ian anthony dale, 40, cis man, he/him ) : creative but stubborn environmental engineer, if he’s not out in the field on work, he’s back home embarrassing his daughter. works for the city and very passionate about ecological and human health, which is great until his parents are in town as they are higher ups for a large fossil fuel company. can be snarky and sarcastic, even downright irritable, but get him around his daughter, and chuck will brighten right up. big fan of following the rules and ‘doing what’s right’ but can lack ‘common sense’ more often than not. [ full introduction/biography here ]

Oh the sky looks beautiful. There’s no denying it. Piper’s fingers tap along the cover of her journal but knows better than to completely isolate herself like that when she has a companion so near by. The itch to sketch is there, though and she can’t get rid of it.  ❝ Hey, um — do you, would you I mean, mind if I quickly sketched you and the stars? They’re so clear tonight. ❞

It’s a yearly routine: her one true independent responsibility out of all of her brothers as well. People love playing and nurturing pigs, and that’s something her family’s farm can supply, so each year Piper makes her way to the community centre to re-enroll their yearly once a month session for ‘pig fun time’. In and out is the motto she’s always had, but this year her eyes linger on a few of the other events and clubs occurring, daydreaming of who she might discover herself to be if only she were to step outside of her comfort zone. 

It’s not until she realizes someone’s eyeing her that she gets out of her trance.  ❝ Oh! Hey—, hey! Are you, um, wanting to spend time in the pigpen? I mean, um, with some cute pigs? ❞  There was a reason her teachers never told her to go into marketing.

Movies like this always got him. Love is everything to Saint, and not even the romantic type, but oh, when they set a cheesy romantic plot with a cast of good looking people and beautiful scenery, how could a person not be moved? 

Wiping away the few tears still remaining as the credits continue to roll and lights turn back on, he turns his head away.  ❝ Oh my goodness. ❞  Another exasperated sigh accompanied by a swipe, this time a bit more dramatic.  ❝ Who decided to lay the onion powder on thick with their popcorn? It’s killing my eyes. ❞

With only a little over a month down in the new carriage house, Pip hadn’t made much process in making the space her own. Too many of her own things had begun as one of her brothers’ or parents’, and now looking around the furniture and decor store, she’s not even sure what she likes or what she’s looking for.  ❝ How does a person even choose? They’re all so.. nice, you know? ❞

No, Saint Castillo sees it as an opportunity for friendship and interesting conversation. Taking a few steps towards the individual, he pats the empty seat next to them.  ❝ Well, howdy, there partner. Mind if I take this empty seat for a spin, and by spin, I mean flop down and share a drink or two with you. What’s that you’re having? Are you having shots, because I’d love it if you gave me one. ❞  He waits, arms splayed open with a lopsided grin covering his face.  ❝ Get it? Good one right? ❞

Fingers gently tap along the random page she flipped to in order to test it out, still uncertain and not entirely sold. Eyes glance up, catching an individual nearby who. She hesitates, shifting her weight from one leg to the next before finally speaking up,  ❝ Hey, um, you don’t happen to know anything about this book do you? I’m in a book-club, and it’s my choice this month. ❞  Pip tries to offer a smile, hoping they aren’t too turned off by the fact that she disturbed their silence.

Pip, after making a few rounds and sticking mostly to the outskirts, finally saw the flash of a familiar face.  ❝ Hey, you. ❞  A light tap on the back of Mina’s shoulder, perfectly accompanying her voice that always has a tendency to sound more like a whisper, even in loud settings like this.  ❝ I didn’t know you were going to be here. Summer and spring meant more wedding gigs with some lucky lovesick couples needing floppy haired, decently priced singers such as himself. 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜 𝗕𝗜𝗢.

Life was easy growing up: travels, nannies there to pick up the messes he would make, and tutors there to make sure, amongst all the fun, Charles Hirano was still making the grades his parents expected. His life path was set ahead, clearly lined, with no little diversions or side paths left to be traveled. After high-school, it was straight onto one of the various universities his parents had connections to in order to study business or economics, during university he would intern at his parents’ fossil-fuel company, and then when he graduated he would land a gig and climb the ladder. Take his place. Secure the family legacy.

The world may have been at his fingertips, all his for the taking as his father liked to say, but that world was small. Born and raised inside an echo chamber of his parents and their colleagues beliefs that were never challenged in the private school filled with students from families just like his, Chuck thought he had life figured out by the time he first stepped foot on his university’s campus.

His first class, an elective he chose just to fill his required credit load, was an ethics course in urban planning, and by the first week, his entire major and course plan had changed. Ethics courses replaced economics, environmental science courses replaced entrepreneurship, and engineering courses replaced e-commerce. 

By the time his parents realized the switch, it was already to late. They had been too busy dealing with their own business by the time he forwarded the graduation ceremony dates, and Chuck had already snagged a job assisting the city planner and city public health commissioner of Huntsville with short-term and long-term projects for the city. It was a humble gig, and certainly not the one his parents wanted him to take, but Chuck was sold.

[ pregnancy tw ] Once in his new home, it didn’t take long for him to flourish both in his role and social life. He was a bright light with something to prove, and that caught the eyes of his superiors, friends, and who would soon become the mother of his beloved daughter. They started as just friends, as she had been dating one of their mutual friends, but one thing led to a next, and when she went through a horrible break-up, it was Chuck’s shoulder she leaned on. He thought he had found the one, even brought up marriage when he finally made enough to save up for a nice right and nice wedding, so it was the least bit alarming when she found out she was pregnant. The two were happy and excited for this next stage of their life. [ tw end ]

With the promise of marriage in the near future, a new baby girl, and a recent promotion to a full-time environmental engineer for the city, Chuck got comfortable. More effort was put on work and making sure he could build a legacy all his own for his family and eventually save up for that big wedding than on the actual relationships he was working so hard for. By the time his daughter was four, enough was enough. She had fallen out of love, and while it was never explicitly stated, Chuck knew he was the only one to blame.

Years past, and he tried harder both for himself and his daughter. He still has his moments where he’ll get too in his head: dinner will be forgotten about, he’ll be late to picking up his daughter from her mother’s, but he cares, and he’s trying and hoping one day it’ll stick.

- feels as if he has a lot to prove, which only intensifies whenever someone finds out what his parents did and where he came from

- fell in love with design/landscaping/engineering type of work earlier than college, he just never realized it. he’d spend hours creating his own little worlds with whatever he could find around house: desert palaces in sand, mud huts with their own mini gardens, and mazes of snow tunnels feeding into various areas around the family backyard

- extremely smart but can often lack ‘common sense’ and forgets things quite easily

- can come off as a bit intense in work spaces but is very laid back in his social life. snarky and sarcastic at times ( most of the time ) sure, but especially with his daughter, chuck wants her to be able to explore and make mistakes and learn from them without the weight of “expectations”

Carla and Daniela Castillo, both in their mid-forties, had traveled the world together, found themselves in exciting and stable careers, and more than anything wanted to at last settle down with a child. When they adopted Saint, the agency had assured them both that their new child was the smiliest baby any of them had ever seen. That, however, was nothing close to comparing to the bright, toothless grin cast across his small face. Love at first sight, that’s what they told him when he was old enough to start talking and asking about his adoption. 

That love never ceased, if anything, it only grew, and with nowhere else to put it, Saint attempted to pass that love along to others. Carla and Daniela may have been his mothers, but they weren’t the only ones who raised him. Siblings, Aunties, Grandparents, and Cousins alike — his mothers’ own found family — brought him into their lives and raised him as if he were their own. Saint, wanting to continue what his mothers had started, was determined to build his own little found family of friends he met along the way.

[ tw/cw: brief mentions/hints of homelessness ] Formal school and studying may not have been his strength, but when put in front of a crowd, he shined. Outgoing, charismatic, with just a hint of a playful mischievousness, he drew in new friends that he’d work with on stage or in the crowd after performances. By the time he graduated high school, Saint committed himself to performance and building a community. He may have been lucky with his mothers and other various guardians, but he wasn’t naive. Saint had heard the need his mothers had to find community and a place to call home, the same need that he heard echoed in those around him. [ tw end ]

[ tw/cw: hospital, illness ] In Toronto, he established himself in the ball and drag scene, building up a space for himself that bridged the gap between his generation and that of his mothers. But just as he was beginning to make a name for himself within the music scene, and despite any signs, Carla grew ill. It was time, both his mothers said, for them to leave the hustle and bustle of the city. A quieter life with access to a good hospital is what they needed. [ tw end ]

While his mothers pleaded with him to stay in Toronto, continue on with his career that seemed to be on the brink of taking off, Saint couldn’t manage the idea of them starting off new lives, in a new place, alone. Promising he would return to Toronto after a year, just enough time to insure they were both alright, he followed them to Huntsville. One year turned into five, and five into seven. 

He’s remade a life for himself, and while it’s not a move he ever thought his life would take, Saint’s never regretted his decision. Self-assured enough to know that he can make the move back to a big city if need be, he’s enjoying the life he has now — not exactly quiet but quieter — with his moms and the friends they meet along the way.

- probably the worst bartender in all of ontario, but he’ll crack jokes while making it for you, flirt a little, hype you up, and overall try to make sure you forget he messed it up

- speaking of flirting... massive flirt but has a rule that he will never hook up with any patrons while on the job. he finds it tacky.

- if you have ever needed a place to stay the night, you’ve likely ended up at at saint’s. he’s designed the interior of his place to ensure there are plenty of pull out couches, blow up mattress in storage, and even a guest bedroom in case someone needs a safe place to crash. 

- calls himself the dad friend even though he’s much more of a brotherly figure. 

- big fan of kissing friends ( with consent ) goodnight 

- cries a lot even though he’ll swear up and down that he’s not a crier. if you catch him crying ( you probably have ) he’ll always have a new excuse for why it’s not the sappy movie the two of you just sat down to watch.

- he sings and plays the guitar. mostly does more funk and electronic but will jam with anyone that gives him the opportunity

𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜 𝗕𝗜𝗢.

Born the youngest of five, Pip, whether she liked it or not, was thrown into the role of being the baby of the family. Childhood was sweet, idyllic even. Dirt consistently clung to her skin and embedded itself into her fingernails from long days out exploring her family’s farm land and attempting to keep up with her brothers. Her mother and father, the prime example of opposites attract, tended to all of their needs and smothered her with more love than she knew what to do with.

By the summer before she entered kindergarten, her parents had big hopes for her. Already well beyond the guidelines for entering her primary years after spending time peaking over her brothers’ homework, they all believed that out of anyone, she would make it big. Bright, curious, cheery, and with six loving, supportive family members behind her, no one had any reason to question it.

Her father and the preacher at her mother’s funeral said she had gone away, a place called heaven. It always looked nice, at least from the drawings in her picture book Bible and the paintings on her church wall. It was just, she wanted her mom here, on the farm, with her. Maybe then she could tell her how to make more friends or figure out why so many of the kids made fun of the clothes she wore or how to get out the smell of manure that they always said she stunk of but she could never quite sense. She mostly kept her head down throughout the rest of her school years. Pip got good grades, tried to join a few clubs and activities, and pushed forward with the hopes that all those people saying “just wait for college, best years of your life,” were right. However, by the time admission rolled around, and she stared down at the blank page for her admissions essay, Pip couldn’t come up with a single thing to say. The truth was: she didn’t know herself, so how could she know what she wanted to do or study?

Six years have passed now, and she’s still not sure of an answer to that question. Without any passion other than to escape and really know herself, and without the means to even do just that, she’ll stay here in Huntsville dreaming of maybes and tomorrows that she hopes come soon enough.

- she hates being indoors for long periods of time. pip loves to be outside exploring, laying out in the sun and doodling whatever it is that catches her eye, or buried in yet another book.

- she has a pig, fiona, that she’s been raising ever since she was a kid. fiona does sleep in the new carriage house around back with her rather than with the other pigs.

- fidgets a lot, which has made some people nervous in the past because it’s almost like she has some unknown energy source she’s unable to get rid of.

- she used to play hockey, and despite her small size, she was scappy after years of playing with only her older brothers.

platonic. childhood friends: i imagine she had a small group of tight knit friends that she still cares deeply about even if they’re not as close. fellow hiking/camping lovers. anyone else that frequents the local library or even book club friends. a devil on her shoulder type that pushes her out of her comfort zone even if sometimes its a bit too much. queer mentor type that helped her get more comfortable with her sexuality and maybe even is the person she came to first about her gender identity. familial. father. older brothers. cousins, siblings to her mom or father, grandparents, anything! romantic. likely has had lots of unrequited crushes over the years. i could forsee her having had one girlfriend/partner in the past.. was likely short-lived due to pip’s inability to fully ‘know herself’ or what she wants. maybe one or two drunk one-night-stands that she deeply regrets and avoids. negative. childhood bullies, rival farmers?, anyone who may not have gotten along with her brothers or father.
