Everything needs to be glass, if it can’t be glass it needs to be ceramic, if it can’t be ceramic it needs to be wood, if it can’t be wood it needs to be stainless steel, if it can’t be stainless steel it needs to be stone, if it can’t be stone it needs to be glass
tbf I am also obsessed with folk costumes but I get a pass bc I'm a folklorist. like it's not for any weird modesty reasons I just crave being covered in embroidery and jingly metal
Modesty in dress is essentially impossible if you’re a woman. Modesty is about not bringing attention to yourself, but that is not achievable at all. No matter what you wear people will look. That’s one reason niqab is just pretentious virtue signalling in the west, how is it more modest to draw MORE attention to yourself by standing out that much? Generally i just feel like anyone who makes a point of being ‘modest’ is virtue signalling and seeking validation from other religious people typically.
i used to think this a lot when i was orthodox esp when the women would start wearing headscarves out in public just to flex on people. one of them decided that the most orthodox thing to do is to wear ukrainian folk outfits she ordered off of temu or whatever plus a headscarf (she was brazilian too?) and someone i know ran into her at a store and spotted her from halfway across the store because of it. it's literally more modest to wear jeans and a graphic t shirt than it is to wear potato sacks and weird shit on your head. bc no one is going to notice you in public when you're wearing jeans. no one will even remember you. everyone will remember the brazilian chick in a full ukrainian folk outfit with a hijab on though.
for western converts religion is often about chasing a psychological high
i don't doubt that some of them sincerely believe in god and the major tenets of the religion, but i don't think most do
it represents something vaguely compatible with what they're comfortable with (basic christianity, the parts that are familiar from their protestant upbringing) + the exotic foreign appearance + all of the persecution fantasies they need to make their boring lives feel exciting + closeness to a legitimate ethnic identity (since anglos have been slowly decultured over the centuries)
they feel good getting attention for their quirky religious beliefs and LARPing as russian peasants from the 1400s and pretending that the government wants to oppress them because they don't vaccinate their 12 homeschooled kids who are years beyond an acceptable reading level
it literally feels like a high to them. that's why they do it. and yes a lot of them are incredibly obsessed with fake modesty and folk clothes
fascinating, I guess then they probably picked orthodoxy bc from the outside it looked like the most traddest and basedest version of christianity plus with the national churches it kinda blurs the line between universalism and ethnoreligion. and ngl it makes sense why people obsessed with aesthetics would gravitate away from protestantism and towards something like orthodoxy (this shouldn't apply to the brazilian woman presumably of catholic background though? idk)
honestly as unhinged as all of that sounds I'm not gonna sit here and pretend like religion isn't also performative for a lot of eastern europeans, just in a different way obvs. many of us frankly barely know what being actually religious and observant entails, I feel like (at least in my country) ppl identify with orthodoxy insofar as it's inseparable from our cultural background and connects us with the past etc., and as balkaners it's maybe also a matter of duty since our ancestors were once persecuted for it, but that's it. we p much got dipped as babies and now go light a candle occasionally. those who actually know and subscribe to the theology and go to church regularly are such a small minority and maybe that's larpy too, in its own way
you don't have to answer if it's too personal but I'm curious, what made you convert back when you did?
you know what (real positivity hours) it's pretty nice to live in a country that has such a variety of beautiful landscapes from snowcapped mountains to lush green hills and valleys to sandy beaches and rocky cliffs, plateaus and also plains that stretch as far as the eye can see; I'm not saying it's not fun to travel abroad I love that too but we literally have all of it at home and it's just as good. Saying this because I saw some of the ads for giro d'italia which we're hosting a portion of this year, and there are soo many beautiful sights 😍 bulgayrians love to complain like it's our national sport so much so we forget how good we have it in some respects

may I ask why a bunch of people are suddenly liking and rb-ing this old ass post by someone who may not even be on tumblr anymore (idk I haven't heard from or of her in years) and why from me specifically?? hello?
