I love it when fantasy stories compare and contrast different cultures that have developed different kind of approaches to the same supernatural phenomena that has the exact same mechanics everywhere.
Like there's one culture where there are Nine Types Of Mages and they all have different sprite familiars - there are nine types of sprites, hence the division. When an apprentice first tries to summon a familiar, they have to have an expert in attendance to see which kind of sprite the apprentice is summoning, and cut the ritual to sever the connection immediately if it seems like the summoned sprite is not a match to the apprentice's type - kind of like how blood types work. If the match is not right, the sprite will just kill the apprentice instead of imprinting. And then there's also a type of demon that might show up in stead of a sprite, and they just always kill the summoner because fuck you.
Then these people encounter a different culture, who also have mages - though they call them wizards, who are far more rare, feared and revered than mages back home, and they have no different types. And when asked about their sprite summoning, they have no idea that there's different types. They don't even make a difference between sprites and demons, they just call them all "spirits". And then someone's just casually like
"Yeah you summon yourself a spirit and fight it to do your bidding, and if you lose it just fucking kills you. Young wizards die nine times out of ten but that's just a risk you have to take."
"...you do not."
best part of KPop Demon Hunters is all the ridiculous faces the girls make
Nobody remembers right before Frozen came out there was an interview with a Disney animator that said there wasn’t much they could do with women’s faces because they “needed to stay pretty"
Star Maker 2023 vs 2019 I really enjoyed repainting this one. Maybe in a few more years I'll give it another go!
Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes don’t go feral like in the book. It’s almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
there’s a timeskip
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
after losing control of the signal fire there’s a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyone’s hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and they’re still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THERE’S AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOT’S CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDN’T HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVEN’T READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DON’T REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK
#tbf the dude wrote it to be a dick
yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.
i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.
ok WOW definitely consider reading the article, these boys–Sione, Stephen, Kolo, David, Luke and Mano–showed tremendous cooperation as well as the ability to share and farm scarce resources, and to care for each other in times of sickness and injury. Not only that, by the time they were finally rescued, “the boys had set up a small commune with food garden, hollowed-out tree trunks to store rainwater, a gymnasium with curious weights, a badminton court, chicken pens and a permanent fire, all from handiwork, an old knife blade and much determination.”
They were all between the ages of 13 and 16 at the time of the shipwreck. And from the very beginning they recognized the importance of co-operation and resource-sharing–starting with sharing rainwater equally while they were adrift for 8 days without food or fresh water.
And here is an interview with one of the survivors (Sione Totau, now 73 years old)

Someone at an old job asked why I wanted to write up the meeting minutes for our team and I said 'i wanna control the narrative' and they were like 'what' and I pointed out that no one was gonna remember what we said in six months and so my interpretation of the meeting would dictate the assumed reality of what happened
"none of you ever send corrections when I offer the draft so y'all have consented to my version"
"we don't read that shit"
"you must trust me implicitly to create our shared reality that's so sweet"
That's how several coworkers decided I was a supervillain and how I learned several coworkers didn't understand record keeping as like a CONCEPT
Hey, folks! Apologies for the lack of comics lately. Just trying to keep ahead of things. To that end... I'm opening a limited batch of group doodle slots for next month. (January, 2025) Perfect as a late Christmas gift, or just, like, cuz you wanna. It can be D&D Groups, Pathfinder groups, etc--I've ever done a few Star Wars groups! Currently asking $25/character. First come first serve, and I'll often make extra room for repeat business. If you're interested, send an e-mail to yourdndstories at gmail, with the subject 'Doodles.'
If you're currently waiting on a doodle, you should have received an e-mail update recently. More actual comics coming soon!

More Witch Hat Atelier Fanart~ I suddenly had an urge to paint Coco's swirly hat as transparent, like water.
Not sure if Brush Buddy is happy to be safe and dry inside the hat or trapped in a hat made of water 😂
Here's a quick timelapse (sorry the quality is low res still, I'm trying to figure out a better way to do this since SAI that doesn't have a built in timelapse feature.) The full video recording is in high res and hours long. It will be DMed on Patreon on Nov 5th!
Ok since i saw this yesterday I have grown fascinated and gone on a deep dive. First of all, Kim Beaton invented that concrete-and-rubber-fibers stuff she mentions. It is called Pal Tiya Premium, and there is a whole youtube channel with all the information about how to mix it and use it. https://www.youtube.com/@PalTiya She makes a giant sculpture of The Great A'Tuin and Discworld with it!!!
Secondly, it cures in air alone, no oven or kiln required, and unlike clay it has microscopic shrinkage between wet and dry, so you can pack it around glass or whatever. When she says you can stand on this stuff, yes, you can (though for very large sculptures or very narrow sections of a sculpture, she recommends adding a metal armature for extra strength). It is impervious to water, so it can go outside in any weather, and any metal armature encased inside it won't rust
Additionally, Pal Tiya Premium can be added to at any point in the curing process, even weeks or months later, so you can make a sculpture in several pieces and, like with a mold, remove the foil core you sculpted on so you can use it again and again (though you have to add a sacrificial layer of foil between the core foil-sculpture and the Pal Tiya (see the videos on the youtube channel about it). You can color it with oxides, concrete stain, inks, or acrylics, including exterior-grade house paint so your sculptures can go outside.
Holy crap. My only question now is what am I going to make with this stuff, what do i need to have in my garden, aaaaaaa
Give my girl Mary Shelly more credit! She did not keep her beloved dead husbands heart with her and potentially lose her virginity on her mothers grave to NOT be given credit as the most badass gothic writer! We would not have the sci-fi/horror genre we have today without her!
i’m obsessed with this
and then, two months later....
