in the book, he never accepts a compliment (which grace isn’t sure whether to attribute to eridian culture or rocky’s personality — i’m gonna assume it’s a rocky thing for this post). he waves off grace’s enthusiasm over his engineering, maybe saying an awkward ‘thank’ if anything. grace GUSHES about rocky in his narration, but holds back verbally.

he also definitely holds a lot of guilt over his mission. he felt responsible for 22 deaths (and the eventual, inevitable demise of his planet) for 46 years. he was alone and useless and stupid and he probably hates himself. and then his breeder tank design fails and he’s alone and useless and stupid AGAIN, this time responsible for grace’s death and the destruction of grace’s planet as well.

i think he’d both preen under grace’s praise and despise himself for wanting it. having his savior shower him with compliments would thrill him, but he feels like he Has to deny them because he doesn’t deserve it. to have grace, as they’re having sex in whatever ways they can, whisper how he’s so pretty and doing perfect for me, rocky and the best thing that ever happened to me would melt him.

eventually, he asks grace not to talk like that while they’re fucking and grace is confused. rocky always enjoys it — fogging up his ball/suit with steam, humming higher and more vibrato, dripping from his seam — so why should he stop? he tries to explain his reasoning and it breaks grace’s heart. m

so he doubles down. rocky literally Cannot escape it; there’s nowhere he can go where he can’t hear grace. he just has to give in and let grace repair his self-esteem one orgasm at a time.

stratt gets to her monthly scheduled half-hour for "feeling things" and lets herself descend into cheeky little bitter envious frenzy over not having the coma resistance gene markers. oh, to not have to face the rest of her life on earth and be locked away helpless while everyone starves, and instead just wake up, work for a single month more, eat the best food available, fix everything with her own two hands, die in satisfied peace, and be remembered with reverence. she's just getting into a proper spiral about how grace has this opportunity but can't even seem to comprehend why this would the most beautiful thing and why, why doesn't he? does he not care? about the world, about me, about himself? what's wrong with him? he has the capacity to care, I've seen it, it's there, but he refuses it. why won't he do this for all of us? if I could just reach into his brain and fix-- and then her alarm goes off and she has to go to her next meeting.

The thing is that Eridians canonically breed externally, by just laying eggs next to each other. Since it happens outside the body, and exclusively for procreation, it seems unlikely that this process would have the same kind of taboos attached to it that human sex does?

By comparison, book Eridians have huge taboos around eating. Possibly in part because they shit at the same time as they eat. Grace manages to talk Rocky into letting him watch him eat 'for science', but it's a hugely awkward experience. At the end of the book, it's mentioned that Rocky had to tell Grace to stop talking about food in 'polite company' when they got to Erid.

So what I'm saying is: Eridian middle school teacher Ryland Grace is probably gonna have to train himself back into saying “fuck”, because “fudge” is likely way more profane from an Eridian perspective.
