Anyway, on to my theory:
In my post above, I considered the possibility that perhaps Knuckles and Rouge met each other before Knuckles came to Earth in Sonic 2. I've considered the possibility that they were rivals for the Master Emerald and constantly fought over who had the right to possess it and/or they could have worked together to find the Master Emerald, only for Rouge to later betray Knuckles. While one or both of these theories could be true, one theory that could really push the heartstrings is the possibility that they could have had a thing or potentially considered being one.
I imagine after Knuckles is reunited with Rouge, he coldly rebuffs her and storms away. Team Sonic (Amy included) finds him drowning his sorrows on grape juice and/or stress-eating bread (possibly Challah bread as he's gotten a taste for it in the Knuckles series). A family-friendly version of the scene from Casablanca could be a very good example of how I imagine Knuckle's looking.
While Knuckles is not interested in talking, finally Sonic annoys him enough for him to open up about his and Rouge's story (I'll go into that later). After Knuckles finishes his story, he bitterly goes over the pain Rouge's betrayal caused.
Knuckles: "Rouge betrayed me. Dishonoured me. She..." (hesitates to continue)
Amy: (softly and with sympathetic understanding) "She broke your heart?"
Knuckles drowns down his grape juice and then crushes the glass in his hands. Millions of tiny, shattered pieces fall onto the bench. Knuckles watches with sad acceptance.
Knuckles (softly and sadly): "Into a million pieces."
Knuckles and Rouge's backstory:
We know a little about Knuckle's SCU backstory from Sonic 2, Sonic: The Pre-quill comic and even the Knuckles series, specifically from the Flames of Disaster song (you can find it on YouTube, but I've chosen not to include a link), but a lot is left up in the air regarding what Knuckles got up to between the massacre of his tribe and between meeting his team and adoptive family in Sonic 2. I give credit to @mama-qwerty for her theory about Knuckles possibly being raised in a gladiator pit as inspiration for some of my own theories.
💬 2 🔁 18 ❤️ 48 · So, in the series, Knuckles was told to make himself at home. He was having trouble adjusting to a calmer domestic life,
There's a possibility that Knuckles and Rouge met in the fighting pits and were pit against each other. While Knuckles appeared to have the upper hand at first, Rouge eventually defeated him using her cunning, charm and of course her ability to fly and give impressive kicks. While Knuckles was humiliated by the defeat and sore with Rouge, secretly...he was also impressed, though he was too proud to admit it.
Though he initially refused to talk to her, Rouge eventually won Knuckles over (albeit in his own guarded way). She offered to help Knuckles on his quest to find the Master Emerald in exchange for his help in getting out of the pits alive. Though cunning enough to break out herself, she felt that Knuckle's strength and good reputation with the mercenaries could "be useful". The two of them eventually left the pits together and started a "purely professional" relationship of looking for the Master Emerald together.
The two went on the run for a while. Developing a Bonnie and Clyde style partnership, though with Knuckles keeping Rouge morally in check whenever she took things too far. Despite Knuckles guarded demeanour, Rouge's charm, cleverness and Amazonian beauty and fighting skills began to slowly win him over. He considered the possibility that despite them being different alien species, perhaps the two could start their own tribe. That the two could have far more than just a "professional" relationship, but Knuckle's was too shy and proud to admit his feelings.
Unfortunately, just when Knuckles was about to admit his feelings for Rouge, she ended up stabbing him in the back to save her own skin (and possibly to have the emerald all for herself). Breaking Knuckles' trust...and his heart. From then on, he became even more untrusting and guarded when it came to the Emerald and his heart (until he became a Wachowski and member of Team Sonic).
Secretly, Rouge always regretted betraying Knuckles, as she often missed him. She was in denial about it due to her "don't get attached" mentality she built up for herself. It's only after the two are reunited does she realise how much the "handsome knucklehead" really meant to her, and she admits (at least only to herself) that her feelings for Knuckles are far deeper than "purely professional". She admits that she may consider Knuckles to be a true friend...and perhaps someday...something more.
Movie comparisons:
I could see Knuckles and Rouge's backstory being a combination of the friendship betrayal story of Puss in Boots and Humpty Alexander Dumpty to a small extent. I could see Knuckles's reaction to seeing Rouge being practically the same as Puss in Boots's reaction to seeing Humpty again.
Of course, I could also see similarities to Puss and KItty's relationship. Rouge is definitely like Kitty in that they are both flirtatious and cunning women (see 4:06 to 5:00) who are all about the score (see 14:19 to 14:24). They're both being guarded individuals who take a while to open up to others (see 7:05 to 8:16), but show they have hearts of gold for those they care about and love (see 14:57 to 15:58). Even how Puss and Kitty say goodbye feels very Knuxouge-coded in my opinion (see 16:30 to the end).
I could certainly see them bickering like Puss and Kitty when the two are reunited (see 2:44 to the end).
Basically, I see Knuckles and Rouge acting like two ex's who constantly bicker with each but can work well as a team when push comes to shove. I imagine them bickering because they're too proud to admit that they have (and in Knuckle's case still has) feelings for each other. I imagine it will take Knuckles some time to trust Rouge again and will take them even longer for them to admit (even to themselves) that they have feelings for each other. I could see their relationship developing as slow-burn over the course of several films. It's important they learn to work as team before even thinking about becoming a couple.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this theory. Feel free to share your thoughts via comments and/or reblogs. Also, if you can, check out my earliest Movie Knuxouge post. I believe it's safe for younger viewers. Maybe PG for suggestive content, religious profanity and a clip from Casablanca, Glee and a Batman Returns gif.
