One fun thing about learning new languages is reconsidering the structure of words and language in your mother tongue. It seems with each new language I study, I get more little insights into English, either in how it's similar or how it's different.

For example, a couple years ago, while learning Spanish, I encountered the word for a store, "la tienda." I thought "huh, that's a lot like tener (tiene) - the word for store in Spanish literally corresponds to 'to have/keep'. How interesting!"

Then I stopped for a moment, and for the first time in my life, thought about seriously about the meaning of English word for the place where you buy things, "a store."

#i love learning German because of this #mostly because of the cognates #<- prev #i want to find a way to learn either german or one of the modern romance languages just for the cognates #i would also love to learn a slavic language (or finish the project idea i started on palatalisation in slavic languages)#and also the indigenous language from where i’m from #and also latin would be fun me thinks #but also more languages outside of the indo-european family (i’ve already done some mandarin)#as much as i find tonal languages difficult (thanks english) maybe some tonal languages would be cool - tonal phonology is interesting #give me all the (non-ai) language learning resources

wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this.

long story short i play a sports ball fairly well and i absolutely love it, except I’m currently on my second soft tissue injury since march. pretty clear red flag saying i need to pay more attention to strength and flexibility.

in fact at the start of this year i tried doing some pilates and cardio at home off of youtube. i did ok at first but for a whole range of reasons that fell away, probably mostly because it lacked structure even if i had a clear motive. i’ve been able to consistently do my physio exercises in the past week, but i hate them and find them excruciatingly understimulating.

i’m wondering if anyone has any ideas on strategies to get more consistent with strength and flexibility work in particular. i’m resistant to the idea of joining a gym for a number of reasons, though if it’s the only feasible solution then i guess i gotta do what i gotta do
