Hello fanfiction community,
Just wanted to bring to your attention that the term whump was actually coined by the Stargate fandom specifically to describe making this guy suffer. He is the original Mr. Whump (no that's not his actual name). That's how torturable this guy is.
Everyone say mean things about him.
Here is a non exhaustive list of what he goes through in canon btw:
His parents get crushed to death right in front of him when he is a kid
He is forced to relive the memory of his parents death countless times
He dies and gets resurrected
His wife gets possessed
He fails to save her and she dies in his arms
He dies and gets resurrected again
He gets infected by a virus that makes him act crazy and gets put in an insane asylum
He dies and gets resurrected again
His ex gets possessed
He is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation
He dies and ascends to a higher plane, then gets kicked out of the higher plane and his memory is wiped
He gets kidnapped by a princess
He gets kidnapped by a fish alien
He gets kidnapped and tortured by some terrorists
He gets kidnapped and tortured by another alien
He is driven to insanity by an alien device
He dies and gets resurrected again
He dies and gets resurrected again
I’m in this photo and I don’t like it 😂😭

STOP BEING SELF CONSCIOUS ABOUT YOUR CREATIONS STOP SECOND GUESSING WHAT YOU REALLY WANNA DO STOP DEBATING IT'S WORTH. LET YOUR ART SERVE YOU INSTEAD OF THE OTHER WAY AROUND
thinking about the idea that being two halves of a whole doesn’t guarantee that you get to stay whole. like it gives you this illusion of completion, something that feels fated, but it’s also the thing that makes you most fragile. because when that other half is gone, you don’t just lose them, you lose the version of yourself that only existed in their light. because if you build yourself around another person, if you become defined by their presence, what happens when they’re gone? when they go, their absence isn’t just grief, it’s like an erasure of self. you realise that being whole together meant you forgot how to be whole alone. you’re left trying to rebuild something that never actually existed on its own.
I'm not even to S8 of this show yet, which I only started watching because Tiktok edits convinced me to give it a go, but I had one thought based on spoilers I've found which was actually important enough to me that I wanted to dust off the old Tumblr post button, on an account that mostly dried up when I stopped writing, to say it.
I don't find the "will-they-won't-they"/"obvious shipbait" aspect to be too horrendous in and of itself. It does kind of suck to fall for it again, but I grew up in fandom spaces online where anything can be fanon, even if it's never canon. Falling for another one doesn't really faze me. The amazing writers in this fandom will continue to push fics to fill the void left by canon.
What I do find really upsetting is the fact that a lot of people involved in the making of/behind the scenes for this show either partook in the involvement of, or at the very least supported the act of, using non-confirmed (and, I would label as shipbaiting, even if it were to go canon later) Buddie to save ratings they knew would suffer because of Bobby's death.
Because that is what this was.
I don't intend to cast my prediction one way or the other on whether Buddie will be canon next season. Personally, I find it irrelevant to the issue that I feel is the most glaring problem of how this season (based on my understanding of spoilers, to be fair, so take this worth a grain of salt) went, which is the sheer and blatant disrespect given to the fans who support this show. Maybe canon Buddie post-Bobby death would have been a little less than ideal, too. I'm sure it would have evoked similar feelings about abusing a portion of the fans' desires to save face following a bad writing decision. I won't lie and say it would have been met without criticism if they had gone that route.
But what I find truly disgusting in this situation is that they knowingly did utilize tactics of queerbaiting (tactics I am all too familiar with from the trenches of Johnlock, Destiel, Merthur, ect.,) in order to shipbait as a means of rating protection. The joint press tour, the questions about being in love and accusations of competition, the acts of devotion and demonstrations of knowing one another so intimately, just to name a few.
In summary (and because I am very sleep-deprived and trying not to be too rambly for anyone who happens to read this), I think the most glaringly disgusting aspect of Buddie this season isn't that we didn't get it, but that it was teased to us because some of the creatives involved in the show knew it would help soften the damage done by one utterly horrendous writing decision. At its core, it's the way in which the showrunners and creatives involved have shown that the fans do not matter which bothers me so deeply.
Not because we didn't get Buddie, but because when they upset and alienated one large portion of their base by killing off Bobby, they strung along two other sides of their fandom (because yes, the Bucktommy shippers were also victims of this treatment, and it wouldn't be fair not to acknowledge it in this post) to make sure they kept themselves afloat for the rest of the season. This was more than just people doing their jobs, because even if they had no control over losing Bobby they did have the power to not do some of the stunts pulled to keep grabbing for Buddie-dependent viewer engagement. These were conscious decisions that showcased how little regard there seems to be for the fans.
I will never forget the day I discovered “wingmen” was already used as a euphemism for gay lovers before the Top Gun fandom got ahold of it.
Oh, but hey, it’s probably just a coincidence, it’s not like there’s any proof the cast or filmmakers were aware of this, by all accounts, obscure queer historical aviation romance. It’s not like the top half of the cover art mirrors a famous scene from the fil… wait…
“You can be my wingman anytime”
“Bullshit, you can be mine” indeed Tony Scott.
Tolkien characters will literally be like what if we were soulmates? What if legends were written of our love? What if our love brought hope in terror, strength in war, and peace in death? What if our love could break barriers, end tyranny, and build kingdoms? What if our relationship changed us in unfathomable ways? What if fate gave us no choice?
then tolkiens like “oh but they’re not gay”
BTW i see these posts all the time like "ohhh i dont know what to comment on fics.." and every response is "keysmashes! or hearts!! anything works :3" and thats GREAT!! thats helpful!!
but: consider. if u genuinely like analyzing writing.. do u know ur just allowed to go through and quote your favorite parts and ramble abt what they mean to u and the author will LOSE IT WITH HYPE?
genuinely. i felt SO WEIRD the first time i did it.. but like. holy shit authors love it. its crack for authors. the first time i did it, it was on a fic that hadnt updated in half a year, give or take, and the author made 3 updates that month BECAUSE OF MY COMMENT.
LIKE. as an author every comment is INCREDIBLE!!! but also, dont feel like your comment has to be short or otherwise ur invasive or smth!! authors ADORE long comments more than ANYTHING.
hyperfixation please stay with me long enough to complete the project. hyperfixation do not fade. hyperfixation finish what you started for the love of god
me as a writer
just putting it out there, but-
you don't need "a whole story around it" for it to be a work of art
people in the 1950s: are they… yknow… a friend of Dorothy?
people in 2024: are they… yknow… holding space for the lyrics of Defying Gravity?
most important part of the writing process actually is when you loop a single song on max volume and stare at the word document and imagine the characters doing things for 14 hours. this is known as getting in the zone
writing isnt even like a hobby to me anymore its just that theres images trapped in my head and if i dont get them out fast enough they start rotting in there and stinking up the place
