phantom of the opera good ending: christine goes on a world tour as a famous singer while these two work in the mines 💪
I don't think I'll ever be able to get over this
thinking about rerik 🙂↕️
thinking about alw erik and raoul. an interesting dynamic (and queer take on them) would be that erik yearns for christine because of her voice, the way it completes his music perfectly. he therefore conflates romantic love with idolisation, his loneliness and hunger for affection fueling this need for her and her gentle nature; her kindness being such that he believes she might be able to accept his monstrous looks.
enter raoul who, despite being different in personality, appearance-wise erik sees he is ideal by other's standards. this fosters a sort of heat within him each time he sees the man with christine, hears his voice, sees him smile, thinks about him after his mind drifts from christine to that man who so often attaches himself to her. he believes the heat is jealousy, when in truth it is partly envy, because he wishes he were so handsome, well-liked and naturally charismatic, then love (platonic and romantic) would be easier for him. he wants to be like raoul, mimic the way he carries himself, the way he dresses and looks, because that is what is considered good and perfect by society, yet he can't. it looks wrong on him. but that heat is also the starting flame of a crush, a simmering lust that grows in intensity until it confuses erik, infuriates him.
why must his thoughts of christine always lead to that man? why does his imagination wander into territory unbidden, of the delicate face of the singer he adores, her lips smiling and pressing against his, to those which belong to raoul? he's angry and frustrated, and blushing has become such a common occurrence that he scarcely realises when he does it.
but he does it, and christine notices it first when she is in the phantom's presence and their conversation somehow diverts to raoul, and this strange, half-masked man's eyes flit off to the side, his fingers fidget and wriggle in tight fists, his one exposed cheek glowing such a fierce red that it's clearly visible in the dim light. and christine tries to understand whether this was the phantom angry and jealous, or perhaps something more reminiscent of someone filled with a desire they have no idea how to handle.
In spite of Raoul’s most valiant efforts to save her from it, christine daae is the heroine of the phantom of the opera. In every (good) version of the story, it is her actions that save every single person involved. And that is part of why POTO is such a special story. Raoul tries to fulfill gender roles and he tries to save her, but he cannot do it. Erik is too strong. The only thing that could defeat him is true love, true compassion. Christine is the only one who would give him that. She is the hero of the story.
I don't think I'll ever be able to get over this
