6 Things People Don't Always Tell You About Studying
1. you ace tests by overlearning. you should know your notes/flashcards/definitions basically by heart. if someone asks you about a topic when you’re away from class or your notes and you can answer them in a thorough and and accurate answer, then you’re good, you know the material.
2. if you don’t understand something, it will end up on the test. so just don’t disregard and hope that this specific topic won’t be on the test. give it more attention, help, and practice. find a packet of problems on that one concept and don’t stop until you finish it and know it the best.
3. sometimes you just need that Parental Push. you know in elementary school, they would tell you “ok now it’s time for you to do your homework! you have a project coming up, start looking for a topic now!” ONE of your teachers might be like this. be thankful for it and follow their advice! these teachers are the best at always keeping you on track with their calendar. if not a teacher, then have one of your friends be that person that can keep you accountable for the things you promised you would do.
4. you just need to kick your own ass. seriously. i know it sucks and its hard to study for two things at once. BUT. I DONT CARE IF IT’S HARD. you need to do it and at least do it to get it over with because you can’t keep putting things off. If you do, you will eventually run out of time and you will hate yourself. force yourself to do it. i made myself sign up for june ACT even though there’s finals because if i didn’t, i probably never would. like do i think i’m gonna be ready in one month? probably not, SO I BETTER GET ON IT AND START STUDYING!
5. do homework even if it doesn’t count. if you actually try on it, then you will actually do so much better on the tests, it’s like magic.
6. literally just get so angry about procrastinating that you make yourself start that assignment. I know how hard it is to kick the procrastination habit. I have to procrastinate. So I make myself start by thinking about my deadlines way early. I think, “oh i have a presentation in three weeks (but it really takes 2 weeks to do), i’ll be good and start today.” when that doesn’t happen, you say you’ll do it tomorrow, and this happens for like the next four days. I get so mad at myself for not starting when i am given a new chance to do so with every passing day. By that time, you actually have exactly how much time you need for it AND you were able to procrastinate the same way you usually do ;)
Real Life: Finals week
You don't know why you're studying anymore?
You’re studying because you want to get a good grade, you’re studying because you want to show that you’re capable, you’re studying because you want to go to your favorite university, you’re studying because you want to be a doctor, a judge, an engineer, an artist, whatever you dream of. You’re studying because you wanna do what you love. You’re studying what you hate because you want to do amazing things one day. You’re studying because you have a goal. You’re conflicted because you care. You’re procrastinating because you think you won’t be good enough, so why even try? But let me tell you, if you keep lying down and just thinking about your ambitions, they will never come true. You gotta work for it. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. I promise you it will be worth it. And don’t think, not even for a second, that you can’t do it. Don’t make excuses. You CAN and WILL do it. You’re studying because it will help you do it.

Tips for procrastinators!
I know from personal experience that procrastination is a very hard thing to break, especially for chronic procrastinators. To help feed your motivation, here are a few tips!
- Plan ahead: Know what you need to get done, and prioritize it. Do things that have the closest due dates and are the most important first. This doesn’t mean blow off other assignments, but if it isn’t due as soon or isn’t as important, save it for later.
- Write down what you need to do: I personally use a small weekly planner to write down assignments and what I need to remember, but you can find whatever works for you. If it’s a planner or agenda, a calendar, something digital (on your phone or tablet), or anything that helps you, it’s perfect.
- Put away distractions: Put your phone on airplane mode/do not disturb/silent mode (no vibrations either), or even better, turn it off. Go into another room than where things that would normally distract you are.
- Public Studying: This is definitely not for everyone, but sometimes it can help to not be isolated. Try doing work or studying in a local library, coffee shop, cafe, or park. You could even try just being in an open area of your own home, such as the living room or kitchen where others would be.
- Listening to music: This is another thing that may not work for everyone, but many people find that listening to music helps them to focus. I personally recommend instrumental music, as there are no lyrics to distract you, but if you don’t like instrumentals songs I would find songs with lyrics in a language that you aren’t familiar with. This way, there are vocals, but not understanding them will aid in keeping the music distraction-free.
- Make sure you have time for yourself: It’s good to study a lot, and you should work consistently, but take breaks and don’t devote all of your time to working. Take a break every half hour or hour. Stretch, entertain yourself, do what you need to do relax. Be social on the weekends. Go out, see your friends and family, have fun. Just don’t get used to having lots of fun all the time, as you will likely fall back into your procrastination cycle. But make sure you don’t devote your entire life to school either, it’s not necessary at all.
- Reward yourself: Give yourself incentives, such as watching an episode of your favorite show after studying for an hour. I would avoid rewarding yourself with food, as this could lead to unhealthy views of food and eating.
- Take care of your body: Sleep. Eat. Exercise. Hydrate. I cannot emphasize enough how important this is to both your physical and mental health. I would recommend at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Going to bed at a good hour and waking up in the early morning (not like 5 or 6 am, but maybe 8 or 9) is much better than staying up all night and sleeping until noon. Eat a healthy breakfast every day, it helps you feel more alert and improves your focus. Exercise regularly, even if it’s just taking a walk a few times a week. You don’t need to join a gym and work out and run marathons, but some light cardio or aerobics is great for your body. Yoga is also very good. Remember to keep yourself hydrated. I always keep a water bottle in my bag at school. Try to avoid sodas, energy drinks, and sports drinks. They aren’t good for you at all. I drink water more often than anything else, but natural juice, milk, and even coffee or tea is great.
I hope these tips are helpful, and happy studying!
Happy April! The blue sticky notes are my last few exams of the semester😓
