IYO is it better to freelance or join an agency/entertainment group to start securing your first gigs?
Great question! There is much to learn from working with an agency/entertainment company and in some respects makes a performer's life much easier. However, in the early days of your performing career you may not have the photos/video/resume, following or opportunities to catch the eye of the agency. I highly recommend taking time to develop your act/look/character/persona and discovering what makes you a unique performer. Gigs will come easier when you have the tools to promote and sell yourself. I also recommend attending auditions/casting calls. Even if you don't get the job or want it, the auditioning process is great knowledge to have. From the very beginning of my hoop journey I had an agent which certainly gave me an advantage as far as getting paid gigs. Over the years I've worked with a few different agencies for nightclub/resort residencies and one-off gigs. I also spent some time handling all my own bookings which really made me appreciate the times I had an agency working for me! I now manage and perform with an entertainment company that provides dancers and specialty performers and keeps me very busy. Hope this helps!
