REPOST : Roman stylus 70AD, in comon vanacular translates into “i went into the city and all i bought you was this lousy pen” , link and full translation in the comments [640 x 320]
Fucking screaming, shitty souvenirs haven’t changed a bit in almost 2000 years
From Planet Knowledge:
The inscription has been painstakingly examined and translated by classicist and epigrapher Dr Roger Tomlin. It reads:
‘ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi gratum adf(e)ro acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m) rogo si fortuna dar[e]t quo possem largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus’
‘I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift with a sharp point that you may remember me. I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give) as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.’ In other words: the stylus is a gift to remind the recipient of its sender; the sender acknowledges that it is a cheap gift and wishes that they could have given more. Its tongue-in-cheek sentiment is reminiscent of the kinds of novelty souvenirs we still give today. It is the Roman equivalent of ‘I went to Rome and all I got you was this pen’, providing a touching personal insight into the humour of someone who lived nearly 2000 years ago.

Look at what they thought women would be wearing nowadays.
I love this.
I love how they predicted we’d all turn into Xena Warrior Princess.
Guys, gladiator sandals, high waisted skirts and bikini tops are in now….

BUFF AND SWOL
anyway I know a lot of people will say it's not that deep but I no longer have any nostalgia for commercial jingles or catch phrases from growing up.
As someone with an intensely auditory memory I resent that some of my earliest memories are the advertisements that barrage us from every angle, even if your parents tried to limit screen time.
I hate that memories of catchy ads are as vivid to me as or sometimes more vivid than childhood memories of my mom's singing or my siblings' voices.
I can't even pump gas anymore without having to hear celebrity gossip or corporate ads. The station screens dont have mute options.
I think a lot of people tend to look back fondly on the same kind of thing because it was part of their childhood, but it's all the same.
I hate Zoo Pals, I hate Tony the Tiger, I hate pillowpets, I hate the Trix Rabbit and the Lucky Charms mascot and moonshines just as much as modern ads. I hate every ad and mascot and jingle specifically designed to target children and get them to want things.
I hate that we can't escape advertisements for nearly a moment in our daily lives. Radios, billboards, restaurants, bus stops. We are always being told to want and want and want, but denied at the same time the rights we need and the income for those wants.
I hate that there are times and places where children grow up knowing songs or rhymes or prayers or jokes or animal calls or new languages before anything else and that so many of us just got cereal jingles.
